What I'm doing INSTEAD of shipping or Grocery delivery...(long)

We leave in one week~~ :cool1:

After much stress & thought over what to ship (due to the airline restrictions for carry on's) , and what to buy through gardengrocer or other delivery service.. I made a final decision and I feel SO freed!! ;)
*This also saves money BTW, shipping and I would have gotten more food if I'd placed an order*

Okay, rather than having groceries delivered, I made a list of the MINIMUM that I needed as regards to food.
We are on the DP and will not have a frig.

So I bought one 12 pack of Dr Pepper (DS would die w/o it ;) ) a box of Honey Nut Cheerios (same DS won't eat anything else for breakfast) Chips Ahoy cookies in snack packs (you guessed it, DS won't eat ANY other dessert!) and here's the kicker....a 12 pack of bottled water.

Also paper plates (Disney ones at walmart) for the cereal, plastic spoons and napkins.

I am packing all that in one small suitcase. I bought huge ziploc bags (2 gallon) and placed the WHOLE 12 pack of DP inside (double bagged) so that if one explodes or leaks, I think it will be contained inside the bag!

Also, I decided to keep things more simple and I am only bringing about 7 bottles of water (I got tall skinny bottles, Nestle brand I think, so they will fit in the little mesh pocket outside my Bagallini!)

I have a collapsible cooler that I will put ice in every night to keep the water cold, then when those run out I will just refill the bottles at the resort and stick in ice over night.

Okay..lastly I was going to ship a package to the resort..stuff like travel sized shampoos, hairspray, all the stuff I would normally put in a carry on. Then I thought, Why am I doing this? I am just putting EVERYTHING I can't carry on in our checked luggage! If our luggage gets lost it would be a disaster anyway!

Plus sides to all this (for me) is less stress, I won't be worried about my package being shipped, or grocery delivery..etc. Plus I am saving money, too.

Only down side for me is that two things I would have gotten delivered is milk and bananas...I'll just have to pay the food court prices for those things every morning.

I know this was long but if you read it all I hope it gave you some ideas!

ETA: The water bottles I am also bagging up in case of leaks.

Anything that reduces your stress -- hey, power to you, that's great! :thumbsup2

But your method would stress me more. I can't just leave my comfort and convenience to chance, even if it's a very very good chance. I like the peace of mind of having my first 24 hours of essentials with me just in case the airline delays my luggage. That means a smartly-packed (NOT over-packed) carry-on bag per person (even the little ones, with their little backpacks). And nowadays, it means shipping a small box for the liquid toiletry stuff -- about $5 or so to mail it. No stress for me, since I'll call to confirm it arrived at the resort before I leave home.

Even though I don't stress about it a lot, the only thing I stress about is that which is out of my control, mainly checked luggage. I've had luggage delayed twice before in my 16 years of air travel, so I've lived the adventure. TWICE. But if I have my supplies for the first 24 hours, I won't stress as much if my luggage is delayed. Most airline luggage problems are delays, not actual losses, and most delays get resolved within 24 hours, so this way I have all my bases covered and prevent MY stress.

Enjoy your trip! :Pinkbounc

You might want to weigh your bags and check the weight restrictions for your flight. I flew recently and now that more people are checking bags they are enforcing weight restrictions much more carefully and collecting lots of extra cash as bags are being checked. I saw LOTS of people having to pony up after they were checked in for their flights.

Have a great trip!

Thanks for the heads up on the weight limits..I'll keep that in mind!

Also, yes, I will have a carry on with a change of clothes & all non liquid stuff like that..just won't have the food and liquids that I would have ordered and/or carried on before the ban.

Thanks for the replies!

Also I heard that chocolate (and toothpaste) have been mistaken for bombs, which means your bags will probably be hand searched. To avoid a delay best to put all this food in clear ziplock baggies so they can easily see the contents.

I believe I would do the same as the OP if I was flying. Milk and bananas aren't that expensive in the food court and the stress of all the packing/shipping/ordering would be a bother to me. I hope you all have lovely, stress free trips!

I'd been thinking about doing the same thing as you but was wondering if it would work out okay. I think I'm going to just go for it. Whats the worst that happens? My luggage gets lost or the soda leaks out into the ziploc bag. I'm in disney, I think I'd get over it! :)

I love it! Shipping a box is stressful, not shipping is stressful, it's all stressful!!LOL I stress over everything when it comes to our trips!! Glad that you have found a way to make your life a little less stressful. For me I don't trust the airlines with my bags or DME. It's carryons and a shipped box with toiletries and food for us!

We did something similar last November - we packed food, water bottles, etc in our hard-sided cooler - taped the thing up like crazy and checked it - it worked great :) We had cool water and breakfast foods all week ( just fill the cooler with ice). Filled the cooler w/ laundry and taped it back up for the flight home. Just be sure to weigh whatever you are taking to make sure that you won't have to pay extra. Have a great trip!

We recently used this method for a trip to Las Vegas and will use it again for
our next trip to Disney in July 2007. We took a small suitcase with plastic bottles of Dr. Pepper and Bottled Water and Graham Crackers and were 8 pounds under the weight limit and everything arrived intact.

I did this on 1 trip to WDW (and plan on doing it in December, again). I found that having snacks, juiceboxes and PB&J made life so much easier. I also bought a collapsable cooler and I was able to purhcase a quart of milk in the gift shop, along with bread. The fruit I did purchase daily in food court but I SAVED SO MUCH money and energy feeding my 5yo and 3yo breakfast snacks and lunch. Which made dinner more special for me and them.
