We are not big Universal fans.
:scared1:We do not do fast rides or roller coaters.
The reason why WDW is better for our family.:goodvibes

But our kids love :love:Harry Potter movies.

How can we just tour Harry Potter area at Universal?

:confused3Does Harry Potter have it's own tickets ?

:confused3What do you think we should do ?
We have never been to Universal.

Thanks for your Universal Harry Potter advice.

You will need to buy a one-park ticket to enter Islands of Adventure to see the Harry Potter area. It's part of the park, just as Tomorrowland is part of Magic Kingdom.

I have to question why you say you are not big Universal Fans and then say that you have never been there? It's not all about big rides and roller coasters. This is a common misconception. In fact there are only 3 major roller coasters between both parks. Disney has just as many (although not as thrilling). There are PLENTY of attractions that are very entertaining and very cool if you want a fun place to go. It's the where the cool kids go. :cool1:

We always thought Universal was made for roller coasters.
I will check out their web site to see what rides in the Island of Adventure they will ride.
Thanks!

First off Universal IS NOT a coaster park. They have a few coasters, but it is a THEME park, with many theme rides, JUST LIKE DISNEY. They have Jurassic Park River Adventure (A BOAT RIDE LIKE PIRATES AT DISNEY) Spiderman, a high tech ride (Kind of like Soarin AT DISNEY), Jaws (ANOTHER BOAT RIDE LIKE PIRATES AT DISNEY), The Mummy a dark ride/thrill ride (SIMILAR TO HAUNTED MANSION AT DISNEY but it gets fast). E.T. a great flying simulator (KIND OF LIKE PETER PAN OR SMALL WORLD AT DISNEY) I could go on and on and on, these are just a few examples. The caps are not me yelling just highlighting. I really find it fascinating that soooooooo many people have so many misconceptions about what Universal is. :confused3

There is a ton of other things to do their besides Harry Potter, saying you want to go to just check out Harry Potter, I seriously doubt you really have a good idea about what all is there. That is kind of like saying you want to go to Disney just to do Pirates of the Caribbean. :confused3 I'm not trying to sound snarky, but I really just don't get this line of thinking. Go to their website, universalorlando.com and look at all the videos and pictures.

Ok, just for some help, Jurassic Park is much closer to Splash Mountain, because it has a huge drop at the end

True just trying to offer examples of why Universal is NOT a roller coaster park. I see this constantly and it really makes me go hmmmm wha??? Its not like Universal hasn't been around forever, and its not like they don't advertise, and its not like they don't have a good website. This to me is a little like people getting on a forum talking about McDonalds, saying NO WE WON'T EAT AT MCDONALDS BECAUSE WE DON'T EAT ITALIAN FOOD. :confused3 Wha??

In December, I made my first ever visit to Universal Orlando just to see the WWoHP. I don't ride most rides either. But I did ride the Suess Landing Sky High Trolley! I think your kids would probably love Suess Landing as well as WWofHP. I did!

As stated before, you just buy a 1 park ticket to Islands of Adventure to gain entry to Harry Potter. Check out my trip journal, link below.

There far more other rides in Universal/IOA than rollar coasters. In fact in IOA there is a grand total of 3 coasters, one of which is a kiddie coaster much the same as Goofy's Barnstormer at Magic Kingdom, the other 2 which are the Hulk and Dragon's Challenge are traditional high thrill coasters.

Over on the Studios side there are also 3 coasters, which only one is a traditional thrill coaster which is Rip Ride Rockit, the other 2 are the Revenge of the Mummy (part dark ride/part mild thrill indoor coaster) and the Woody Woodpecker Coaster which is again, a kiddie ride. So out of of 2 parks, you only have 6 coasters, 2 of which are for kids.

Most of the attractions in the parks are more like Disney rides(only better themed in most cases) and over at IOA they have the two most ingenius dark rides ever created in the Amazing Adventures of Spiderman and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. FJ does have some thrill too it, but it is not a coaster, more like a dark ride on steroids with a mix of video simulation and animatronics.

As for things your kiddos might enjoy besides Potter in Islands of Adventure, there is Suess Landing which is of course created for kids. Jurassic Park has a wonderful Discovery Center and playground as well as a flying ride for kids(must have a kid to ride if you are an adult). Marvel Superhero Island is also fun for kids even if they are too scared or little to ride Hulk, especially for little boys.

As for Potter, I will 100% say it is worth it if you have fans in your family. I have spent close to a full day in that area of the park without getting bored. It is themeing beyond what any other park has ever created. It is a small section however, and depending on crowds it can easily be seen completely in a couple of hours.

I honestly think you should give Universal a chance before saying you are not a fan. You have never been so therefore how do you know that you are not a fan? Trust me, I used to be a true blue Disney girl and then Universal got Potter which made me spend more time there. Now, Disney is no longer my #1 themepark vacation choice. I always used to do Disney with maybe a day at Uni, now I stay at Uni and if I get over to Disney for the day, then I do, if I don't well, then I don't. Never thought the day would come when I'd say that, but it has and I'm ok with it.:)

Just don't go in with some preconcieved misconceptions and thinking, "Oh this is not Disney" because then you will be disappointed. Just go with an open mind and open eyes and experience something new and fun.

we just got back from WDW, IOA/US. We have 6 kids from 6yrs to 18yrs old. Plus my father joined us for the trip. We did IOA mainly because the kids really wanted to do Harry Potter, and because when we went last year the teen-agers all really enjoyed IOA. One of the surprising things that happened this trip was that my oldest two boys really enjoyed the "shows" at WDW and at IOA. I expected them to whine a little when we would stop for a show but the whole family began to look forward to seeing them. At IOA we loved the Sinbad stunt show. The other surprise was that my 65 yr old father rode every coaster we came to! In fact, I wasn't daring enough to ride Dueling Dragons (renamed now for HP) but my dad rode it with the rest the family twice in a row, while the 6 yr old and I wandered HP a little more in depth. I enjoyed IOA just about as much as WDW, and I would recommend it to any family.
A tip from us is to get to HP at opening. We went directly to HP at "rope drop" and it was getting a little busy already, but an hour latter it was almost impossible to walk around. By mid-day it was so crowded it was unenjoyable.

My 10 y/o son and I went to IOA this past Sunday, 2/13.

We left Disney propery at around 8:35 am. We took a cab from AKL-Kidani Village to US-IOA.

This was our very first time at US-Orlando, but we had been to US-California several times before. We were going mainly to experience the WWOHP (and to ride Spiderman). We got to the gates at exactly 9am. We didn't pre-buy our tickets because we were not sure if we'd have time to do WWOHP because DH and my younger DS wanted to do DTD on this Sunday, but we ended up doing separate things and decided to meet up later in the day.

Anyway, it was a short line to get our US tickets, one day one park tickets only for each of us ~ $160 for the both of us. The person behind the ticket counter laughed when he saw my Disney Visa, and said he just loved it when US took money away from Disney! ! He also tired to sell us Express Passes, but since FJ was not included in it, we decided not to get them. We entered the park at around 9:05 am and turned right thru Suess land and past Poseidon's temple to get to Hogsmeade. There were no crowds on the way to Hogsmeade. My son said he hoped WWOHP was empty too, and I said that that's probably where all the people are at. (I wanted to condition him to the crowds, if any. I didn't want him to get disappointed if the wait was very long.)

We were giddy with excitement as we approached Hogsmeade and saw Hogwarts Castle from afar We first took a photo by the Hogwarts Express train with the conductor. There were a good amount of people walking around town but very manageable. We passed by Ollivander's, and there as a short line of ~ 20 people there. DS was not much interested to see the Ollivander's show, he merely wanted to buy a wand, so we decided to pass that over.

Then we hightailed it to Hogwarts Castle. Well, there was NO LINE AT ALL! Mind you, it was about 9:20 am at this point. The sign said standby wait was 15 minutes, but the truth is, we just walked-on. But, before entering the castle, there are ride seats you can sit on to measure if you fit in before actually going on the ride itself. I am a bit on the heavy side (~200 lbs) and I fit easily with some room to spare even . I was told by a Team Member (Cast Member in Disney lingo) that the end seats on the benches were modified to fit people who need the extra room, btw. So we go thru the gates and because I had a bag, we detoured to the locker area where we got a locker for free (1st 40 mins free, after 40 mins, you get charged a couple of bucks). I thought it was cool that it used fingerprints to rent and open your locker, no key necessary.

After we stowed my bag and jacket, we went through the queue. It was AWESOME!!! I don't want to spoil it for you, so skip this paragraph if you want to be surprised. There were talking paintings, the Daily Prophet, the Phoenix that guards Dumbledore's office, hologram Dumbledore in his office, DADA classroom, Harry, Ron and Hermione in hologram, Herbology classroom, the talking Fat Lady portrait, Sorting hat, and the Candles floating on the ceiling like in the Great Hall in the movie. You can actually go through the Castle without riding, there is a Castle tour path for non-riders. I wanted to stop to look at the displays longer, but there were people behind us and I didn't want to hold up the line. And as I said earlier, we walked on through to the ride benches. there are four seats on one bench, and they load very quickly. My DS sat on one of the middle seats, and I was at the left end beside him.

Again, I don't want to spoil the ride for you, so skip this paragraph if you want to be surprised. There was the Hungarian horntail dragon that breathes steam onto your face, a bunch of giant spiders (Aragog) that spit venom on you, Whomping Willow that attempts to hit you, Dementors chasing you, and the collapsing Chamber of Secrets. At the end of the ride, the characters from the movie are hologrammed onto a wall and wave bye to you as you exit.

The ride was a little rough, but not as bad motion sickness-wise as I had imagined --and I am a chicken when it comes to rides, having done TOT only twice and EE once in my life (my sons tricked me into those, but that is another story). Never rode Space Mountain nor RnRC. My type of rides are Haunted Mansion, and Peter Pan, so you can see where I'm coming from. I say try it once, I think you won't regret it.

After we exit the ride, we go to Filch's Emporium/gift shop. We look around a few minutes, but DS and I both need to use the bathroom, so we ask where one is and we go to the one in Hogsmeade. Surprise, Moaning Myrtle is in the Ladies' Room (my DS says she was in the Men's Room too!) I didn't "see" her, but she can be heard all over the bathroom.

Anyways, after that, we decided we were hungry and want to eat at the Three Broomsticks. It was about 10:20AM. We ordered Fish and Chips (we shared) and a glass of Pumpkin Juice and a glass of Butterbeer ~ $ 20 for all. We liked the Butterbeer, it was like watered down Rootbeer float! But the Pumpkin Juice was so-so IMHO, it tasted like liquified Pumpkin pie! We sat by a nice young lady at Three Broomsticks, and she is a US AP holder who lives in Orlando. She said the day before, Saturday, she was at WWOHP at around noon-ish, and the standby wait to get into FJ was 4 HOURS! Whoa! So it seems to me that Sunday early AM is still the best time to go to WWoHP to avoid the crowds.

We took plenty of photos at the Three Broomsticks, and when we were done, I asked DS if he wanted to ride Dueling Dragons or FOTH, but he wanted to examine all the shops closely and explore the village instead. We entered Dervish and Banges and bought some wands and a quill. We went back to the entrance of Hogsmeade where the train was and took photos with another conductor. Hogsmeade was getting very busy and more people were arriving. We went into Honeydukes and bought chocolate frogs and a chocolate wand. Entered Zonko's joke shop which connects with Honeydukes, but didn't buy anything from there. They did have plenty of cool stuff like sneakoscopes, screaming yoyos and extendable ears. We saw plenty of folks with Gryffindor scarves so we decided we would get us those too! They had the scarves just like what they wore in the movies at Dervish for $39. We got the Gryffindor one. We also wanted the Gryffindor scarf with the crest and the word "Gryffindor" written on it, but we were told by a Team member that only Filch's sold that kind. We wanted to tour the castle again anyway, so up we walked to Hogwarts again.

This time, the line for FJ said 45 mins, still not bad. We walked through the Castle tour line, and there was only one other family who was touring the castle. We then walked over to Filch's and bought the other gryffindor scarf, WWOHP cap for DH, 2 awesome harry Potter pins (we are pin collectors, Disney only, but Harry Potter too now!), and a Gryffindor keychain. The gift shops in general are very tiny and crowded, and darkly lit for ambience. If you have claustrophobia, this is not a good idea, I overheard one person panicking, "I gotta get outta here". We took plenty of photos in and around the castle but decided we didn't want to ride FJ again. One a day was enough. DS "dueled" with a team Member selling wands at a cart by the Hogwarts gate, and we took photos with other wizard-costumed Team Members. We examined the shop windows closely and saw self-writing quills, and a box of shaking, restrained quidditch balls.

Btw, I forgot to add that there were carts around WWOHP that sell Butterbeer in case you didn't want to go to Three Broomsticks. The butterbeer is served either in disposable plastic cups with "Wizarding World of Harry Potter" printed in front, or you could get a plastic mug with an emblem on it, but I think that one was more expensive. No drink covers for either Butterbeer mugs/cups. Too bad because I wanted to bring butterbeer to DH and younger DS. They did have bottled and sealed Pumpkin Juice if you wanted to take it home.

Also, about wands, they are sold everywhere there. You could get them from the places I mentioned above, or even at the main US-IOA gift shop in front, by the IOA entrance. At WWOHP that day, there was an abundance of all the wands, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, Voldy, Sirius, Ginny, Lupin, McGonagal, etc. They also had generic wands, which appealed to my son more. Of course, he has 2 Harry Potter wands at home already . Younger DS got the Ron Weasley wand as a present from me. He likes Ron better than Harry.

By 12:30 PM, we just about saw and experienced everything we wanted in Hogsmeade and Hogwarts. The village was really very congested by that time. So we decided to say farewell to WWOHP.

We rode Spiderman once, then left US at around 215 pm, took a cab to DTD and met up with DH and other DS and baby DD at the World of Disney store in DTD. The cab ride from US to DTD (exit #68) was much cheaper (~$25) than from AKL-Kidani to US (~$35). We then took the Disney bus from DTD to our Disney resort. (This was a tip from the cab driver that brought us there).

Sorry this post was detailed and long, but it seems to me we were in the same boat as you are, being Disney veterans but US-IOA rookies. Hope this helps. In any case, enjoy your trip! P.S. I also posted this in the Harry Potter crowd report thread, but reposting it here in case you didn't see the sticky above. ;)

Wow did you not check out Jurassic Park? Got one of the best rides in the park, the Jurassic Park River Adventure. If you go back next time, make sure you stop off for that, its not to be missed.

We rode Jurassic Park in US-California several times in the past, so we skipped the one in Orlando. Is it any different than the one in Cali? Just curious. Sorry OP for going OT here, I don't mean to hijack your thread. ;)

It isn't that much different than the one in California...a few scenes are different, but basically the same kind of ride

I'd say Spiderman is more like the Dinosaur ride at Animal Kingdom than Soarin'.

How can we just tour Harry Potter area at Universal?
Please don't spend the money to go to WWoHP and then leave. There is so much more to see and do at IOA you would enjoy without riding coasters. Seuss Landing all great for all ages and Me Ship The Olive is great fun for kids. Cartoon Lagoon is a fun place to walk around and explore. Plus if you like water rides, Ripsaw Falls and the Bilge Rat Barges are two of the best you'll find anywhere! You can use water cannons from the bridge over Ripsaw Falls which I love to do. Marvel Super Hero Island has Hulk but there's also Spiderman, Dr. Doom's Fear Fall and cool themeing.

Theme park tickets are too expensive to spend for just one section of a theme park. Take the day and enjoy yourselves.

No its roughly the same, but I ride it more than just about any other ride, its one of my favorites, I can't get enough of that ride, plus I just like boat rides. There were some very minor differences, seems like the one in LA has the car slide down into the mote. I don't recall that, or maybe it just never worked at the Orlando one. But from what I remember its almost 100% identical.

Thanks for your Universal Harry Potter advice.

The Potter section is just a small part of Islands of Adventure, both Universal and IOA are excellent and full of rides like what you find at Disney, and a lot of people would agree that many of these rides would top anything you find at Disney.Spider-Man is still probably the greatest ride ever created, when the Forbidden Journey ride opened in the WWOHP it was heavily compared to Spider-Man and probably most people still feel Spider-Man is the better ride.Revenge of the Mummy is part dark ride part roller coaster no more intense than Space Mountain, that right there is an amazing ride that would be a top ride at any Disney park.Men in Black is an interactive style ride just like Toy Story mania or Buzz Lightyear only better.Just go down the list and you'll see both parks are full of rides that make this a resort that's worthy of at least 3 days to get everything in.There are only 3 coasters between both parks that are considered heavy thrill experiences, one being in the WWOHP.

Thanks for the great info! I am about the same size (around 200 pds) and I was so worried about NOT being able to fit on FJ but now I feel much better! Quick question though, both my husband and I wear glasses. They aren't going to fall off during the FJ ride are they? Also, does anyone know when the Frog Choir comes out for a show? This will be our first trip (in April) so we're a little green. Thanks!

Sorry! I thought of another question. Is there "It's a Wrap" at IOA? I read there is one at Universal Studios. Thanks!
