What happens in 2008? Cheney has expressed he has no interest in running for President and quite frankly by many Republican's own admission is not electable anyway. I have gone back through history and have not found an time when a sitting vice president has not at least attempted to get his party nomination for President. Does this leave the GOP dead in the water in 2008 or does Cheney get replaced between now and then if they win next week?

Cheney will not be replaced, he is a great Vice President. I wish to God that he was electable, but he's just not sexy enough for America. McCain or Giuliani will get the nod, and either will be a VERY strong candidate. But I'm hoping for Johnny Mac.

i have always believed that at some point cheney will be replaced. i think that "health reasons" will be cited, but i have no doubt that he will face party pressure to step down in he and gwb are reelected.

i am really interested in hearing who republicans think their strongest presidential candidate will be in 2008.

I prefer to work 1 election at a time. Call me back in 2006, or whenever the Democrats start lining up again. Whichever comes last. In the meantime, you still got a week b4 this election.

do you really think so?

i don't see guiliani as very electable, nationally, and the party sure doesn't seem to like mccain.

honestly, for the sake of my husband and other republicans out there who are fed up with their party - i hope mccain is the nominee in 2008. i might even consider voting for him.

The thing with McCain is, I'm not so sure he really wants to be President. Mind you, I'd count that in his favor (not real comfortable with anyone who really *wants* the job).

But in 4 years a lot of things can change. I certainly don't think the GOP will be dead in the water, regardless. Beyond that, hard to say at this point.

Govenor Pataki (NY) has formed a committee to look into his running in 2008.

Mitt Romney will be running

I would also vote for McCain.

I think the scenerio is John McCain is given a high position in the new government and is ready to run for President in 2008. I'd also like to see Colin Powell as President.

Who was the goldenboy from the RNC 4 years ago?

I think he was CT Gov. and looked promising to the party

I too believe Cheney has been a good VP. But, would'nt you say its true that if you are not running as part of the incumbent ( i.e. the VP) administration, that you are forced to run against it. There would be nothing for {insert name here} to really hang their hat on, if they were not part of the administration. Also, there would surely be multiple Republican's seek the nomination, so really you are working from the position of the "non-sitting" party. I think it would be very devisive.

ugh and double ugh!!!

if pataki ran for president, it is very possible that he would lose his own state. as a former nys resident, i have had the priviledge of voting against him.

as for mitt romney - i think your  really sums it up, crankyshank. :p

Hillary Hillary Hillary

Or, maybe even Harold Ford, Jr.

Gulliani is pro-choice and pro-gay rights. He'll never get the republican nomination.

Yeah I see those two as positioning themselves for the race now, they are heavily campaigning with Bush now. This is not only because they want W re-elected, it's because they want to gain the party's favor. Both of them were meeting and having breakfast etc. with the delegations from Iowa/New Hampshire, etc. at the Convention.

Giuliani I think is definetly electable nationally, when you factor in New York, the GOP could afford to lose a few red states and still win. 9/11 made him one of the most popular figures in American politics.

McCain may anger some in the establishment, but I think that the Republicans want to win more than hold on the grudges. Especially if Kerry loses and Hillary runs in 08, I see McCain as the definite nominee. Hillary is a very divisive figure (much like Bush) and will energize both the left and the right, countering with McCain would throw a great percentage of moderates toward the GOP. He is someone who is not a divider like almost every political figure in the nation. When over 65% of America approves of you, you must be doing something right. I would love to see McCain because I agree with him more than probably any political figure, he is against the gay marriage amendment, is willing to try to root out the corporate entrenchnment in politics, and is for low taxes and is pro life. I'd take Giuliani, although not enthusiastically. I find McCain to be the most genuine politician out there who won't bow down to special interests.

there's no vomit smiley here, or I'd be using that in reference to Romney.

do you really thin gwb will appoint mccain to anything??? or that mccain would accept if he did?

sirius - i adore harold ford. i have had the great priviledge to meet him in person. :)

true, but he also has the baggae of a scandalous affair, and as sirius said, he has some rather "liberal" social viewpoints. i could see the rnc trying to remold him, but i'm not too sure how well he would appeal to the christian right.

This is one of my biggest gripes. No one who is not a hard core Conservative or a hard core Liberal ever seems to get their parties nomination. It seems like you have to be all or nothing to get nominated which is a shame because there are a lot of people who are moderate independants looking for a happy medium.

Sometimes we agree with the left and sometimes with the right depending on what you are talking about.

If the Conservatives were all up in arms about Clinton's affair(s), there's no way they can nominate Guiliani.

Besides, he's way too liberal for the big money campaign donators.
