Out of the following what do you think is the best hotel to stay at? Any input would be great. We are planning on going to Disneyland in October for three nights. Thanks!
Tropicana Inn, Park Place Inn, Camelot Inn, Ramada Maingate, or Howard Johnson

I agree with the above poster (the HOJO gets GREAT reviews on every Disney board that I have visited).

However, as far as location goes, it's tough to beat the Tropicana. Nothing fancy but it's very close to the maingate and it's clean. If you're anything like our family, you only spend enough time in the hotel room to sleep and get ready. If that's the case then the Tropicana is just fine.

I will say that, after reading all the reviews of the HOJO, it wouldn't break my heart to stay there, either.

Best for what? Distance? Price? Quality? Noise?

I like BWPPI for distance myself. It is the closest. Hojo's has much nicer grounds though and nicer rooms.

I haven't stayed at anything other than the Tropicana. It's very 1960's - 70's in the feel and the age. However, it's clean and you can't beat the location. It takes a grand total of about 5 minutes to walk to the main gate.

However, HOJOs is just a little bit further away and from what I get from reviews has nicer rooms. Some have a view of the park. No park views from Tropicana.

Don't know about the others.

Enjoy!

I litterally just posted this same response on another thread question.....

I would say check each of the possible hotels addresses in the Megans Law website. A while back a local news station did a report on the LARGE number of sex offenders that were living in Disney Neighborhood hotels and how the tourist had NO CLUE..........some of these hotels being right accross the street from Disneyland.
It is always possible that since the report things have changed but I personally would still check.

We stayed at the Best Western Park Place Inn. It is directly across the street. Some nights I was thinking how nice it would be to be in one of the farther away ones because then I could stop at the trams and ride the rest of the way to the hotel. ;) I think you have to walk more staying closer. heehee

BWPPI for distance and HOJO for pool and easier parking.

There are registered sex offenders almost everywhere, at least in Southern California. I live in a very nice suburban area and when pulling up the sex offernder map, there are read dots everywhere. It's not something that is limited to the Disneyland area.

The HOJO always gets good reviews.

I would take "always" out of your post, there are plenty of huge complaints with Hojo.

Hojo is great if you have younger kids that want to use a fun pool(but consider how much time you will be swimming when you go to Disneyland). Otherwise it's not nessecarily better than the others.

Of the OPs list I would choose the BW Park Place Inn for it's super close proximity to the gates and free breakfast. Of course except for the Hojo all the other choices have a continental breakfast. And the Ramada also has a newly redesigned pool with a few splash play elements.

Since no one else has commented on the Carousel, I'll speak up. I stayed here a few years back with some friends, and we really enjoyed it. It's fairly recently renovated, and the rooms all have hardwood flooring and granite countertops. The rooms themselves are kind of small, but the sink is separate from the toilet and shower, and there are pocket doors to separate the sink area from the bedroom area as well. There are also a fridge and microwave in the rooms, and the beds are nice and comfy. It all feels fairly upscale for a motel. The free breakfast isn't anything to write home about, but it's there. There's a Quizno's in the hotel that offers breakfast sandwiches for a fee at the breakfast if you don't want the donuts and cereal. The pool is on the roof, which is kind of cool, although it's not very big. You can see the fireworks from the pool area.

When I was there last they were just implementing a parking fee, but it was still all self-parked. I think they have valet parking now? Internet is available, but they charge a fee. The best part is the proximity-- it's not right across the street, but it's only a couple of hotels down from the crosswalk. I found myself looking longingly at it the last couple of times I stayed at the HoJo when my feet hurt. :D

If the prices look good for the Carousel, I'd definitely recommend it.

I have always heard that Howard Johnson is a great choice.

I guess I have heard more. There have been problems with front desk staff, management, the pool and a loud freeway that many rooms face. Far more minor some people don't like features in some of the rooms.

I agree with Wahlee about Carousel. In terms of distance, it's only a little farther away than BWPPI, but it's right next to Camelot and much nicer. I've stayed at both of those hotels (and, like other posters, have heard many good things about HOJO), and I'd choose Carousel again in a heartbeat.

I'm actually at the pool. This place is tops. Have to recommend it!!!!
10 minute walk to DL gates.
