What have you done for extra money?

I am thinking of getting a part time job for the evenings and weekends. It will be tiring, but I really need some extra cash flow right now.

They are opening a new Petland right down the street from me. Part of me thinks that might be enjoyable, but I'm not sure. Or I could go back to Dillard's part time.

What have you all done when you needed extra money?

On the weekends for extra money I work as a concierge at a hotel. I also work seasonally at Universal Studios for extra money.
Last Christmas, I worked at Hot Topic and would go back there this year if I wasn't working at Universal.

Petland sells puppy mill dogs, right? That's the only chain I've heard that does - thankfully we don't have them here. I would research that more before trying to work there, honestly, as you likely wouldn't want to represent a place like that.

For extra cash I worked XMas help at Bath and Body - gave a discount and extra cash. I'm having a moving sale in 2 weeks and hope to make some cash from junk laying around! I also sold some things on Amazon - books. It's SO easy and free!

I use to do store inventories which was really easy work and the money wasn't bad, demos (but you are an independent contractor which can make a difference at tax time)

Yes, I had heard the puppy mill rumor...that's what makes me hesitate. I do not want to work for a place that supports that!

I DO have some old college textbooks and junk I could sell on Amazon...I'll have to look into it!

Kirbsam, seriously, how much did you earn? I would consider that, too!

Steppdad, I'm no good at keeping my own place clean! Maybe I could babysit, though. How much do reputable sitters normally charge?

My DH is writing computer software right now for a company that hired him on a contract basis. That's what he does for his fulltime job during the day, and sometimes, when he gets business, he does it on nights and weekends. He does it mainly so that he can get contacts and eventually work on his own, though.

It is nice. In about the past month or so, he's earned enough for us to buy a minivan in a few weeks. It will probably be a 2003, but we'll be able to pay cash for it.

I teach natural childbirth classes at night, too.

As for me, when I was 18 my DH (he was my fiancee at the time) went into the military and moved 8 hours away, so a friend and I planned a road trip to go see him. We needed extra money for gas and tolls so for a couple of weeks we drove all the back roads of our town and collected deposit bottles and cans to raise the money we needed. After countless hours and many bags we managed to make enough to cover our expenses.

If I were looking for a part time job now I think I would look to work for a company that I frequent that also gives discounts to employees. This way I can earn some extra cash and save some money at the same time.

On a side note, my sister recently started waitressing at a friends place to help her out and just today she made $70 in tips.

I make wreaths and sell them to my neighbors and patients at work. It is so easy to do and I can sell them for a huge profit and still be below anything you can buy at the store (and mine are MUCH nicer! )

I got a part time job nights & weekends (when DH is home) at Babies R Us Not a great discount, but it will come in handy at Toys R Us for xmas shopping this year!

I also babysit a friend's daughter 4 mornings a week.

Got a seasonal job at Gymboree this time last year for a little extra $$ and time out of the house. Liked it so much I was promoted to assistant manager and stayed on until we moved

An earlier poster had excellent advice....think of any retail place you normally shop that offers employee discounts. They're almost all hiring right now for holiday help. Not only will you get paid, but you will get the discount, toom on stuff you would have purchased anyway! (I *think* I saved as much with my employee discount as I *made* in hourly pay! Maybe even more! )

Look for surveys and focus group opportunities on freebie websites, and craigslist.org for your city.

My DH did a focus group for soup last week. He ate two cans of soup (he got to take them home to eat) and got a $35 check. Last year, I got $100 for giving my opinion on Lowe's paint.

There are tons of opportunities if you look hard. I get calls for some so you do need to qualify. If you qualify, you are good to go.

I have also babysat, taught classes, was a party attendant at a foo-foo boutique, stuff like that.

I had a few part-time jobs while I was teaching. The most lucrative was probably being a cocktail waitress at a dinner theatre. You aren't taxed on tips, so you are making way more money. My husband has a seasonal part time job as a beer vendor at sporting events. At pro football games he usually makes $150 to $200. Not bad for 3 hours of work.

I'm a teacher. I would have a hard time picking up a true part-time job because of my extracurricular duties (I coach debate, which takes me away at least one Saturday a month).

But I *do* proctor the SAT here at school whenever I can. It's a little something extra, anyway!
