what happens when you don't make the connecting flight?

in a worst case scenario of course! what will happen if the first flight is delayed and you miss the second? i've allowed pleanty of time (2 hrs), but what if? oh, and what if that 2nd flight is the last to your destination out of that airport for the day? i'm such a worry wart

They will simply book you on the next available flight of theirs.

A few airlines will put you up in a hotel if the reason for their delayed arrival at the connection point is not due to weather and not extreme (the general term is force majeure).

However they should not delay you until a seat in the same category such as deep discount or reduced miles award comes available.

IF the airline was the one that booked the connection they will do whatever they can to accomodate you on the next available flight.
If you booked the connection they don't have to help you-they make treat you as a no show and you'd be responsible for buying another ticket.

when you say "if you booked...", do you mean like different airlines? i booked both flights as "one" (both same airlines) through the airline's website.

Then you will be fine. But as someone else said, if the reason for the missed connection is weather related, you're on your own to find accomodations for the night. The carrier is only responsible for rebooking you on the next available flight. The key word is available, if they are sold out for three days during a busy holiday season, then you wait three days, and possibly not at their expense.

If it is the same transaction, ticket receipt, and payment for the whole trip, even if different airlines are involved, the airlines are responsible for rebooking a missed connection.

Two separately paid itineraries for example A to B round trip and nested B to C round trip and the first flight arrives at B late: that is not a missed connection.
