what happens to reservations when upgrading tickets to Magic Key?

We've read everywhere that if we want to upgrade existing park tickets to a Magic Key pass during a trip, we need to do it on the last day of our reservation because otherwise we'll lose our reservations. Has anyone had a different experience? We are going for 5 days in October (bought our tickets before they launched Magic Key, otherwise would have just bought Magic Key to begin with, and SO annoying that we can't just upgrade over the phone!). We'd love to be able to upgrade at least *one* ticket to a Magic Key so that we can get the discount for the week (10% on dining will really add up for our family of 6 on a week-long trip).

Has anyone been able to upgrade on their first day and keep reservations?

I would check the calendar make sure there’s availability for your pass the pass and just book it that day.

Check availability! That's what stopped me from upgrading on my first day; there weren't any reservations for the following days, and they confirmed x3 that I would lose all reservations (including the reservation that I used to get into the parks that say since there weren't any reservations available that same day). I ended up upgrading on my way out of the parks on my last day. Sad, because I had REALLY hoped to get some AP/MK stuff!
