What happens if you miss your flight?

I've never missed a flight, and sure don't plan on it, but just wondering what happens if you do? Would they just put you on a next available flight stand by or make you buy a one way ticket home (that would be horrible!)

I'm just a little nervous since we're flying out of Jacksonville and we'll have to drive up from Orlando that morning. Only something totally unforseen would make us miss the flight.

I've missed a flight on NWA when I set my alarm clock wrong. They just put me on the next flight out.

I know someone who booked a ticket online and accidentally typed the return date as the day before she planned to return. I'm not sure how she discovered the mistake, I think her husband called her because he had a copy of her itinerary and thought she was coming home that night, she was flying alone, she met friends at WDW. So the flight she was booked for had already left. I believe it was Delta - they put her on a flight the next morning at no charge (so she had to actually leave WDW earlier than she planned, the flight she really wanted was that evening).
