What happens if I don't add the dining plan?

OMG!!! WE LOVE THE DINING PLAN!!! Won't go back to Disney without it. We are going to eat at least one sit-down meal per day while we are on-site, so the DDP is always going to save us money. Also, we are now addicted to free dining promos, so pretty much all of our trips now rotate around when free dining is offered. Just to good of a deal to pass up.

Free dining is great when you can get it (doesn't always work out for everyone)

Buying the dining plan may or may not be a good deal for your family, it depends on a lot of factors.

You can eat anywhere at Disney that you want to without the dining plan (we have only had it twice in dozens of trips)

I would never leave Disney property to eat, you would waste hours and hours of park time doing that:sad2:

We can definately tear up some food. We can go into an all you can eat buffet and nearly eat up all they've got. hahaha :rotfl:

If you're going to do a buffet every day, and you want to do it at disney, then it's possible that the plan will work well for you. It makes the quick service meal (and snack) on the normal dining plan nearly free, assuming you go to the more expensive buffets.

But if you go to a normal table service, you'll only get the ONE entree per person, not as much as you want to eat. If you guys like appetizers those will be out of pocket with the normal plan.

Of course, if you're really fans of eating a ton of food, you might consider the *deluxe* dining plan. Check out the menus on allears, consider the price of the plan, and see if that amount of food per meal and per day will work for you.

(but I still suggest Sweet Tomatoes!)

the only way I will do the dining plan is if it is a trip bonus like kids eat stay and play free. The dining plan is just a bunch of food we would have never ordered in the first place.

OP, like your husband I loves me some buffet, breakfast, lunch, or dinner it's all good! Really liked having the dining plan the 1 year we did it but by the end of the trip it was too much eating.

Like others, we split it up between some ADR's, CS, WS, snacks, and food in the room and its definitely cheaper. You know if you have a car there's some decent restaurants on S535 right outside WDW. We usually hit the Golden Corral at least once every trip. Plus there's Super Walmart just down the road for room provisions. This year I have a kitchen, so we'll definitely do more room meals.

Count us among the non-DDP folks. I won't get it even if it's "free" since you have to pay rack rate for the room and I can always get a AAA discount of some sort (we don't go between Christmas & New Years).

Why don't I like it?

1) I actually don't like the pre-paid option. Why should I let Disney hold onto and get interest from my money when I can keep it? And what happens if someone gets sick or isn't hungry one day? That's money wasted.

2) What if I don't feel like eating one day at an ADR that I made 6 months earlier? Then I have to worry about whether I can get in somewhere for that 1 TS credit, or waste money.

3) We don't eat the way the plan is set up. We often find appetizers much more appealing than desserts, or sometimes even than entrees. Those are all OOP on the DDP. Sometimes I want to have 2 appetizers; one would be OOP even on the DxDP. Sometimes I want to have dinner at one place and dessert at another. Can't do that without paying extra. And I don't want to feel like I "have" to have dessert at each meal except breakfast because "it's paid for" and I don't like to leave money on the table.

The DxDP is simply too much food. I rarely can eat both an appetizer and a dessert at a single meal, and certainly not multiple times a day! We can often split desserts, and that's enough.

4) We love signature dining. The DDP doesn't have enough TS credits (signatures usually take 2) for us to eat signature most nights. And as noted above, while the DxDP does have enough credits, it's too much food! I also did the math, figuring the cost per dining credit, using less for breakfast, a little more for lunch, and most for dinner. Rarely would what I order even at signature be more than the value of 2 credits.

I "prepay" my dining myself by keeping the budget and the money I want to spend in a separate "account." Then when I'm on vacation, I don't worry about what I'm ordering, or whether something is "worth" a credit, or how I'm going to maximize my credits. I order exactly what I want, eat what I want when I want (assuming appropriate ADRs), and thoroughly enjoy myself.

Even if it's a couple of bucks more OOP, I'm much happier, more satisified, and likely weigh less, too! :rotfl:

Out of about 14 trips I have only had the dining plan twice. If you want to eat at a lot of buffets, it will be well worth it. Buffets on Disney property are expensive! And as others have pointed out, it is not a quick trip to leave property, eat, and go back into the parks. You would waste a lot of time.

If you think you would do a sit down meal or buffet each and every day anyway, then definately get the dining plan. It would be worth having.

You don't need it , we PREFER it.Simply put we know we want a TS meal and we like the feeling of our meals paid in full.I have done it with and without the dining plan, and the dining plan has almost ALWAYS saved us money. But different strokes for different folks. There is NO right or wrong way to do it

I would say if you plan on sitting down everyday to a meal then the DDP would be worth it. The cost of it may cover just that one meal. When hubby and I go alone we dont get it, when we take the two boys we get it- man can they eat.:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Good with, good without. Either way, its disney! :cool1:

I took my parents December 2009 and we did stayed at a moderate and did free dining. First, because I wanted them to experience TS meals since the last time they went Epcot was the new park, two because it seemed to save us more money than the room discount and three (and this was the main reason), my dad freaks out at having to make decisions. He's much happier if you just tell him where we are going to eat. He loved it! He kept saying, its just like a cruise! He liked it because you didnt have worry about paying for anything, you just showed up and ate. We did schedule our TS meals but the CS we did randomly since we had park hoppers so we got to eat at WPE in DTD and other neat places. They took us to disney when we were kids but we rarely did much since the crowds and all the decisions freaked him out (so I found out later from mom when I realized she had never been on some of the older rides or to the restaurants  ). He loves disney this way, though. Wants to go back already! (my 6 months of careful planning paid off, yay!) On the other hand, my friend and I, we have gone when it wasnt offered and ate just CS meals...sometimes we even brought sandwiches and chips into the parks to eat and it was just as fun. It all really depends on what you want. This year, my friend and I are going and she wants me to book the free dining (hope they have it again in early december!) so she can get to go to some of the TS restaurants she hasnt gotten to go to since she's been going on a budget for the last number of years both with me and with her folks (who dont like TS meals anyway). She is happy with staying at a value resort (loves POP over them all actually) but this time she wants table service meals galore and she knows I'm like this :surfweb: for a year beforehand when I plan for something like that so I'm getting up menus and such for her to look at now. Yes, I know its early but part of the fun to me is the planning plus come July once I book we can pick out TS meals and get what we want. Now the CS meals, we will just play that by ear, and of course we always get park hoppers, so that helps.....anyway, that's our plan but whatever yours ends up being you'll have a great time. I mean, it is DISNEY after all! :cool1:

My DW and I did the dinning plan for the first time on the last trip. It was only the two of us so we tried it out. I kept all of the reciepts (because I'm that kind of guy) and then added everything up after. I figured out that for the two of us on the standard 1 TS a day dining play we saved a total of $50 over the one week stay.

Did I like the dining plan? Yes. I hate going on vacation and counting pennies. Knowing that all the food was paid covered allowed us to order anything we wanted.

Why only $50 in savings? My DW does not like seafood so her choices for dinner were usually not very expensive. Also we did multiple dinners that counted as two TS so we would have ended up using the dinning credits more nights if we had done fewer double TS.

We did eat a lot more food than we would have if I were counting pennies and paying for each meal out of pocket. I also think we would have lost money if we used the dinning plan with my kids when they were younger because they would never try anything new (or expensive).

We have used the dining plan once, and never again. Not only is it too much food, but really, it does not save us anything. Usually we just eat at QS whenever we feel hungry, and make a few TS reservations for the trip and it is completely fine. Have a good trip!

I'm trying to decide if I really need the dining plan or not.

Can you really have a good time WITHOUT the dining plan? Does it really save money to eat off campus? My husband is a big "buffet" lover. Are their good places you can go eat off campus or is it a be hassle or headache to go somewhere else to eat?

I'm in a valley of decision here. I'd hate to skip the dining plan to save money on the trip.. and then get there and WISH we had it.

Of course you can have a good time without the dining plan! We went in '09 without it and had a blast. We ate breakfast in the room, a TS restaurant at lunch, and then a light dinner. The only reason we're doing the DxDDP this time is that we realized that the restaurants were more about the experience, for us, than the food. I want my kids to enjoy the various experiences.

Run the numbers and see what works best for you. To be honest, though, i not plan on going off-site for most meals...it would be a huge hassle.

I've been t Disney several times and last fall was the first time I had DDP. Now that I've done it I won't go back to not do it simply because I like the carefree aspect. everything is paid for and that's all that matters. That being said, All the other times, we didn't do DDp and we still had a really good time. We shared some meals and all and mostly did quick services. It was fun but with small children, I like the DDp better.

Wow, you pretty much summed up why we prefer not to use dining plans. There are lots of us out there who don't care to do the dining plans. And we eat at all the same places those who do have dining plans eat. You don't have to have a dining plan to have fun. We have been almost 30 times and have done OOP each time...no problem.:thumbsup2

I think it all depends on whether you like to eat or not. We have done free dining 3 times and paid for it 1 time. We will be paying for it again this September unless free dining is announced. My husband and I enjoy steak dinners and eating a steak dinner at a table service restaurant every night would definitely NOT be in our budget. It is great to know that everything is paid for in advance (except for gratuity) so we don't have to worry about saving up/bring enough money for our meals. It really isn't about the savings for us (of course free dining is awesome!), it is more about the convenience. Making an ADR once each day isn't really a big deal. We also think it is fun to add up our receipts each day to see how much we "spent" on food lol! Now, this year we might change our tune because it is our first trip since we had children. I don't think it will be a big deal though because we went with my husband's family in 2008 and our nephews were only 4 and 14 mos and it wasn't a problem at all.

I didnt ad the dining plan though. So now I need to find out buffet style restaurants they have that are a little more budget friendly. :dance3:

Are you talking on property? The cheapest options are usually breakfast buffets. And those start at around $22.

my first trip we just ate at wdw for 10 days but have never done that again, you have to have a hired car and go to restaurants just to get something other than burgers, chicken and pizza. have a wonderful holiday:thumbsup2
