What happened to Oshkosh overalls?

For the parents out on DIS (anyone interested in kids clothing) I'm wondering what happened to them? When my kid was small I remember buying various ones - especially the hickory striped ones that were like the ones common with railroad engineers. I was at a store, and I couldn't find any in sizes bigger than 5T. Doesn't look like they're any bigger. A few years back I saw them in sizes up to 14.

I remember when adult sizes were available and a lot of my classmates in high school were wearing them as a fashion statement. That was before they sold it off to Carters and turned it into a children-only brand. They outfitted CMs on the Disneyland Railroad with adult Oshkosh overalls.

I kind of miss them. I thought they'd look good on my kid, but didn't buy the larger sizes since I thought they'd still be available.

I remember when adult sizes were available

i wore these allot in high school. i had a full back brace (think the type in romy and michelle's high school reunion) and the osh kosh zip down the front overalls were among the few items that fit over it well. they were very comfortable.

I love dressing both of my children in Osh Kosh overalls but it's getting harder and harder to find any. I think they are phasing them out because they are not a popular clothing choice anymore. Personally, I love the look on little kids especially the shortalls in the summer.

They're stopping at toddler sizes. I don't think they'll phase them out completely, but I remember they used to have overalls in their stores lined up against the wall or on a prominent table in the center. Now it's limited to a couple of racks the last time I checked out a store.

I heard the history of Oshkosh B'gosh making children's clothes was so that kids could dress up like their parents who wore overalls for work.

I've seen Levi's kid's overalls, but they never had the same variety as Oshkosh.

I haven't seen overalls for big kids in years. Sure there were some short-alls and overalls in the juniors section recently, but they were crap. Thin or stretchy materials full of holes, not quality pieces.

If I could find a flattering pair over adult overalls in my size I'd wear them. I loved mine as a child and then again as a teen in the 90s.

The fad passed is what it amounts to. The company doesn't go beyond youth sizes these days due to poor sales beyond that range. They're no longer made in Oshkosh. They were down to 10% domestic manufacture by 2000.

Isn't this sort of like asking what happened to bell bottom pants, or Members Only jackets, or wearing multiple Izod shirts with starched collars? :rotfl2:

Not necessarily. There are plenty of overalls (although likely made by contract manufacturers) from companies like Carhartt, Dickies, Ben Davis, and even Levi's. However, I always considered Oshkosh B'gosh to be the standard bearer. I can still find them from children's clothing brands like Carter's, Gymboree, Crazy 8, etc.

I don't know about a $348 MRSP for these. I think they're American made.

I think I have my Members Only jacket buried in my closet somewhere.

Uh, OK. I see you've done some research into this. I was just making a joke, I don't know much about overalls. Not my thing.

I think they have just fallen out of fashion for adults. Be assured that if they come back into fashion, every manufacturer will make them again.

I have mine from my high school days. Late 70's.
Graduated in 1980.
I have a the all jean one's, green cordoury, the blue stripped and just a white pair.
My kids all worn them for dress up days in high school during home coming week.

I used to go to the Factory Outlet in Oshkosh, and you could buy those bibs for $7.00.

I love them on little kids, but once they hit school age, they really don't wear them (which is a fashion blessing for teachers, because kids need easy clothes for bathroom independence!)

I get them online for DS usually at Carters. I don't know what size they go up to. DS is still a baby.

Like I noted - 5T is the biggest size now. Same for Carter's which owns Oshkosh B'gosh and even has some combined stores. Also - I remember they had different sizes, where 3 was slightly larger than 3T. The last time I bought any for my kid was a few years back, and I distinctly remember a whole wall of overalls in larger kid sizes.

They're still pretty much in fashion here in the UK, or at least from what I can tell. That said, I remember going into an Oshkosh outlet years ago before the Carter's takeover and seeing them in bigger sizes, though my dad didn't like the idea of me wearing them at the tender age of 12, so he passed on that. That said, I did get some new ones not so long ago from Boohoo Men.
