What goes on in this game???

. . . that people (note: ANYONE, not SOMEONE) can always find something to worry about. I sincerely hope that (someone/anyone) bans their kid from watching TV (especially commercials, where lying, cheating, stealing, deceiving, etc is considered FUNNY) as well as most movies.

I think the suggestion about creating a character and playing the game is the best way to learn how VMK operates. I think of the VMK community as being similar to a school community (I am a teacher, so this comparison comes naturally). The VMK staffers are like the administrators - there to keep the peace. The Community Leaders are like the teachers - there to help, instruct, and guide. And the players are like the students, who come from all walks of life. Some kids are good and some kids are not. You can hang out with the good kids, or you can hang out with the "wild" ones. I think most of the shady stuff takes place in guest rooms. I had someone enter my room and pretend to pee in the corner, while he made comments of contentment. It was actually pretty gross and my friends in the room (all adults) were dismayed. But overall it is lots of fun and I have made some great friends from all over the U.S. I say give it a whirl - and if you do, look me up! I'll be happy to show you around the kingdom.

I am entitled to raise my child the way I feel is right. I'm not trying to tell you how to raise your children. Since I don't play this game, all I'm trying to do is find out what happens in it. My goal was not to come here and start a debate on how to raise children.

I don't remember saying I was concerned with "cheating, stealing, deceiving" in VMK. I'm concerned about all the sex talk. My 9 year old doesn't need to be seeing that.

Mal, just curious, but do you play the game in advanced mode?

I normally don't, but thought I try it today. I am surprised by how few ppl I see in the game now! Perhaps that makes a difference.

I have seen a fair number of rude players, depending on my mood I either ignore them, say I will report them or say play nice, which always seems to come back with a defiant no!

Just thought I'd mention I declined a trade the other day from some girl that came in my room, she very kindly called me a "loser mental pig" then disappeared quick. Sadly I didn't get her name to report her.

I'm not saying it is all bad in there, but it certainly isn't a bed of roses either. When I started playing VMK, from the very beginning, I saw quite a few VMK staff on a daily basis, I always saw one in the music game and Town Square. I hardly ever see any now, only notice they are on the Guest Room list every weekend now, and I play a far bit too!

I totally believe you when you say there are good places in the game. When DS first started playing I sat with him and watched for a while. It did look like a safe, fun game for him. Don't you think it's possible that there are bad places too though? I know I haven't seen it myself, but I don't think they (other DISers, my DS, and everyone who posted about it on the other site) are making it up.

I'm uncomfortable with the fact that it's so easy for him to go to these questionable rooms while playing VMK. He's a good kid, but he's also a curious 9 year old boy. VMK is supposed to be a game that is OK for kids. It's not like he's out seaching for adult websites.

Everytime I walk into my DS9's room, when he is playing VMK, he shuts the site down or covers it up with another window. I've let it go because I couldn't believe anything bad would be happening, but I finally sat him down to talk about it. He admitted that there is stuff being said that is not appropriate for him to see. I think he's too embarrassed to tell me what it is. This is making me very nervous. Please be truthful with me and tell me what's going on on VMK. He's very upset because he loves this game and I told him if I find out there is something bad going on I won't let him play it anymore.

Everything is probobly fine I think he just wants privacy. think of it this way if he was with his friends in real life would he want you coming in and listing all the time? I may not be a parent, and therefore am not entitled to tell others how to raise their children, but I am observant in child behavior, and I can tell you that some young children are animals. It's getting so they can't be brought out in public for all of them to witness the inappropriateness of their actions. I believe they get this from tv, movies, and videogames. Studies do show that children who are desensitized to sex and violence in all media forms becomes more aggressive, even dangerous to themselves and others.

If I were raising a child, I would not allow him or her to have any friends, watch any TV or movies, or allow him or her to access a computer until they live on their own or turn 25, whichever occurs first. If they want to entertain themselves in the meantime, they should read a book in their room.

I am sure yes things get said in VMK every ONCE in awhile, ONCE being the key word here. But VMK is watching and when those people are reported they are removed. And there is also the ignore button.

I am sorry to say that if you think that your child does not see or hear worse in the real world then you are kidding yourself.

I am not attacking you just pointing out some facts. I do not see SEX in VMK, I have seen a few inapprioate things but nothing that I would equate with an adult website.

I think you have made up your mind about VMK and I do not need to try and defend it to you. This game is a wholesome family game and if you chose not to let your son play then I respect that.

yes I think we can and this will be my last post to this thread because I honestly do not know why you keep responding to it. You have made up your mind and that is that. Why bother with this post any longer other than try to stir things up. I am sorry I am just alittle agitated with this whole discussion.

There is not now or has there ever been adult entertainment happening in VMK. There may be a few preteens and teens trying to get away with suggestions but that is just it.

The Fan Site kids love to make a big deal of isolated events (which everything that is said in the post are) and point out how horrible and disgusting they are. While they are really awful events, they're the exception to the norm and not the rule. The VMK Staff are very good at seeing when inappropriate actions are happening and if someone reports it...they'll be out of the room ASAP. I have only seen one instance of inappropriate behavior and after lecturing him about proper manners toward a lady, I reported him and he disappeared.

If anything, your son is doing something wrong by hiding things from you. I know if I go around hiding the things I'm doing on the net, I'm immediately banned from computer usage. If he stays away from the the more risque rooms he will be perfectly fine. A good solution would be having him on the buddy lists of us Dis'ers and have him only visit rooms we're in, getting him used to using the "Ignore" button, and make sure he knows how to report someone.

If you don't search for it...you won't find it. VMK is the safest place on the Internet for kids. And I'll stand by that until I see VMK erupting with anarchy.

if you block your child from VMK won't he just go searching for other games that probably have worse people and nothing keeping them from saying bad words and things you don't want your child exposed to? At least VMK has a dictionary that blocks out most curses and the "report", "call for help", and "ignore" buttons (unlike many games I have played).

first off, i havent been on for a while, but i am disappointed with the behavior of some of us.

second, i would say that i have played the game for around 40 hours or so, and i have only seen 2 BAD things, so thats once every twenty hours of play. vmk is not BAD per se, but i have seen some incidents, and imho the vmk staff is incompetent in dealing with it, however, vmk is probably the safest website online.

third, have you played around on vmk at all yet Zandy595? i know you have every right to be upset and ground your child from vmk, and i respect that, however, i would really recommend looking around a bit before passing judgement.
