What else could I have used as downpayment at the port?

When you get to the port and are at the check-in desk, they always ask for a credit card which I thought was for them to just swipe to make sure the card was good for $500. I told them I would pay off my bill in cash, Disney Dollars and Disney Rewards dollars, but as the trip progressed and I would go to guest services to pay off my bill in increments and discovered my Visa card kept being charged. Ultimately, guest services would reverse the charge on my Visa after I paid in cash, but I'm wondering could I have skipped handing over my Visa at the beginning of the trip and given them $500 cash or equivalent so I wouldn't have had this recurring Visa charge situation?

You could have given them cash up front and then "resupplied" your account with additional cash as necessary as the cruise continued.

We give ourselves ship credits before we leave. We estimate our spa, drink, souvenier, excursion, laundry charges and leave that plus a little extra. Then if we do go over, it is minimal and no big deal.

How can you give yourselves ship credits before you leave? I think I may do that for our DS's.

Just click on the link for ordering information and they'll give you a 1-800 number or pdf order form that you can fill out and send in. Do you have your paperwork from the last cruise? If so, check out the flyer for the stateroom gifts and celebrations. It also included an area to purchase stateroom credits in advance.

If you do it as a gift then you can't get any extra money back right. I was under the impression that gifted credit you couldn't get back, but if you put extra cash down at Guest services you could.

I plan on putting money ahead of time for tips and excursions, and the rest when we get there.
