What does your job mean to you?

They were always open to me. I never applied. Over 40 years managers morphed from experienced staff who had worked their way up, to people who were professional managers with little to no actual experience in the industry. My interest was in the work in the industry, not EEOC rules, HR rules, and at the end of my career juggling the needs of the company with covid requirements. And while I never actually knew what the pay was, in California as of January 1, salary ranges must be posted in job ads, and those salary ranges are pretty pathetic.
I was a team player. I could hit home runs and make contributions from my position, but I never wanted to be the team manager.
I'm with you because I can't progress any farther than I have as it would be into management. I have been crapped on by management for almost 30 years, I don't want to have to become the person crapping on my friends and coworkers I've had over those 30 years.

Worked 3 places doing the same job over 42 years. My wife worked at one place in 42 years doing the same job.
My mom did the same job (Surgical RN) for 40 years, no interest in being a manager.
So I guess it just is the norm in my family.

Not me as I'm still at the first "real" job after college and leaving the high school job.

Dad was in the same field, quoting electrical work. However a friend of his called him up and wanted dad to run his new electrical contracting company so became the vice president of a very small outfit. Didn't manage though as it was just the field guys, dad doing the project quotes and titled as vice president and the owner.

I love what I do, and who I do it for... it's both entertainment and a living.

It means a way to pay the bills. I look at it as a business transaction and nothing else. I trade them my time and they trade me their money. Either one of us can end the relationship when ready

It gives me a place to be during the day.
It gives me freedom because I'm finally making my own money.
It makes me feel needed.
It makes me feel worth something.

It also aggravates the !@*^* outta me.
It gives me anxiety because I know I'm underpaid, but I'm scared to ask for my worth.
I'm underappreciated by upper management.

I am able to do fulfilling work that adds value and helps people (it is also very difficult to do well, and I'm quite good at it), but once I tenure into retirement in 2 years and 33 days, I could absolutely walk away from it without a regret.

I am proud of work I do. Job means nothing to me. Learned early on to work for my own gratification. Really very few times in my career seen company do anything right by the people working for them.
They do what they had to, yes.
So I do what I have to loyally, but really not beyond that.
It makes view a little easier knowing I can find work quickly.

Lots of frustration and emotional exhaustion. ER charge nurse. However, I can't seem to leave because I can't think of anything that would be better. I was in marketing and PR for years before I went back to nursing school and 5 days a week, 9-5 is not for me. I can't stand wearing dress clothes and having meetings about meetings about meetings. Blah.

It's what gives me those fabulous things I've gotten spoiled by....a steady paycheck, health insurance, retirement savings, paid time off.
