I am tired of buying toys that he wants for all of a day or maybe even a week then they get tossed aside. I really like toys that require imagination if that helps!

Thanks!

My son is 3.5, but for the most part he plays with his Thomas the Tank Engine stuff. It has been this way for months. He puts the tracks together in different configurations, lines them up and counts, the trains have "conversations" and "arguments" :lmao: Tonight they have had a huge wreck at the end of the track.

I honestly think I could toss every other toy he has (except for the stuffed Pooh he sleeps with) and he wouldn't miss a beat.

ETA: He also re-enacts stories from the Thomas the Tank Engine books we read.

my guys love:

* die cast cars
* geotrax train set
* train table
* marble run
* blocks
* legos
* play doh (especially to make footprints)

My nearly 5 year old plays with legos, geotrax sets, matchbox/hotwheels sets and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

The Cars Diecast toys, trains, puzzles, books and that's it, other than the toys he rides on outside.

All my boys were "in to" something at around 3-4. First ds it was rescue heroes, second ds it was power rangers, and now little ds2 it is thomas the train. Just go with open ended toys if they are not "in to" something. Legos are really good for this age, so is playmobil. And also a dress up box with costumes and uniforms. Plus I've tried to go with a few bigger outdoor items so that it is not more junky stuff to pick up. Skateboards, scooters, bikes, a jump house, see saw, sandbox.......if you don't have any of that stuff, thats a good choice too. Good luck and happy shopping!:)

The Christmas my DS was 4 he got a Leapster. I can honestly say it was the most played with toy that entire year! Even from age 5-6 it was his favorite. They are very educational!!! I would highly recommend this as a gift!!! Plus it's portable so he can bring it in the car to occupy him.:thumbsup2

Playdough is a HUGE hit in our house. Both of my 4 y/o's love that stuff. They have the Playdough Super Craft Caddy that comes with molds, scissors, pizza cutters, rolling pins and floor mat. It all fits in the Caddy when they aren't playing with it.

Blocks and diecast cars - they love to build roadways, bridges, etc and then drive the cars over what they've built. I bought a box of Melissa and Doug wooden blocks the love to play with.

Wooden train set - the train set fits together like puzzle pieces - very easy for them to set up themselves. it came with a little wooden train, plus they use some small wooden Thomas the Tank Engines to play on the track.

Books - they love books. there is a pop-up series of books by David A. Carter - Alphabugs, Jingle Bugs, Halloween Bugs - there's a whole bunch of them. My kids LOVE those books & they aren't very expensive. They also really enjoy the Eric Carle books.

Puzzles - I found some on sale at Marshalls a few months ago. I made sure to get something that was a little challenging, but not so much that they would get frustrated. Anything with the alphabet interests them a lot right now.

Another tip---If you notice he isn't playing with a toy anymore, try putting it away for a month or two, then bring it out again---that sometimes works for mine - it's like they have a new toy again!

My almost four year old loves Thomas the Tank (we have the wooden set), he also has a set of Geo Trax and likes to play with both. I let him have one set for a few weeks then we pack it away and we take the other set out. Thomas is the favorite I think. Both my sons like to play with the trains, Match Box cars, Leapster, puzzles, wooden blocks (used to make ramps/garage for the cars). I have tried to get my sons a race track set, but I have had to return the last two I purchased because they just didnt work. I find that if it is a toy that comes out of a box, and it is plastic and you have to put it together, it wont last very long.

Mine liked legos or duplos (in particular the thomas railtracks one), Geotrax, Anything he could build with like Lincoln Logs,Puzzles, Leapster, Rescue Heroes and anything art related.

When DS was 4 (he's 6 now) he was still very into his Matchbox cars and die-cast airplanes....would line them up on the rug, have them "climb" up the stairs, create huge parking lots of them. With the airplanes came some "runway" pieces and he would make runways and have them take off...look for "Hot Wings" airplanes, they are about $4 each. For some reason, he would re-enact scenese from the Lion King or Nemo with his stuffed animals and cars....for instance, the blue corvette would fall into the gorge where the hyenas were stampeding, or the fighter jet would be riding the East Austrailian Current, or whatever.

I can't remember exactly when the dinosaur obession began, but, well, we're still obsessed. The Dollar Store had great plastic dinos for super cheap and we got some accompanying books and there is a cartoon, Land Before Time, that isn't too scary. At age 4 he was differentiating between plant eaters and meat eaters. We have also had an outer space and shark phase.

He was big into puzzles at age 4...the floor puzzles with big pieces. I got some on Ebay for pretty cheap. But mainly the cars, airplanes and dinosaurs, all of which cost maybe a dollar, maybe 3, each.

This is a game that my 10 year old received from a friend on his birthday. This game has been played with daily since his party and our 4 year old loves it as much as his brothers. It is a great problem solving/puzzle game and you never know who will win. The 4 year old often beats his big brothers or even us. I highly recommend this game for all families.

Love this! Thank you for sharing! Its on my list now!!!!!!!!:goodvibes

Thank you all for such great replies. My oldest ds now 10 loved his matchbox/hot wheels and thomas trains when he was preschool aged but my younger ds who will be 4 in Feb. just really isnt into all that jazz. He loves books, puzzles and play doh. We had thought of getting that big craft caddy so im glad to read another family has found great success. He has also been really into Mr Potato Head. On his xmas list this year we have leapstr l-max, tinker toys and planet heroes. What do you all think? My oldest ds has tubs of legos, knex and some lincoln logs so I dont want to buy what i already have on hand!!! I had to pause in my typing here to make a paper airplane!

We live in Indiana so its a wee bit chilly for us to have outside toys this time of year!

One last thing. We have a large tub full of little people that my 21 month old plays with but other than that she pretty much wants to follow her older siblings around and play with their toys. I have some FP little people sets on her xmas list, a tea set and play tent that looks like a cottage on her list.

We are paring down this year to 3-5 toys per child because we just get so crazy and spend too much! And that NOT what Christmas is about.

Again thank you and keep the ideas rolling!

My 4yo son has 4 sisters and he likes dress up, wooden blocks, Little People sets, their playkitchen set, his train table, playing in their sandbox, Tinker toys, Lincoln logs, preschool board games like Hi Ho Cherry Ho and Bear Bingo, Hot Wheels, reading books, Playdough or salt dough (homemade is wonderful and cheap), coloring books, and doing puzzles. He also enjoys cooking and does simple things, like mixing and pouring.

I tend to get him "classic" toys more than trendy one's.

GL!

My 4 year old loves his diego play sets and he plays with the POC toys.

I'm not sure about having little ones around, but magnetics seem to be the thing here and come in all different size sets. My DS plays with them for hours.

My DS plays with his Rescue Heroes and legos a lot, also his big dump trucks and assorted diggers. We have a big bin of Duplos upstairs and a lego table with legos in the basement so dd2 won't get into them. He also has a huge amount of Brio wooden train tracks (due to dh always needing more to build the perfect layout) but he hasn't played with those for awhile. He also enjoys puzzles and loves books. Do you have Richard Scarry books? DS can look at those all day!

I'm from Indy too :)

My 4yo ds (5yo next week) likes hotwheels, playdough, puzzles, coloring/drawing, Power Rangers, Transformers, V-Smile, computer games, legos...

For his birthday or Christmas he wants Planet Heroes, Leapster or VSmile pocket, a camera, Star Wars and power rangers figures.

My 4 yo loves legos, k'nex, and his big thing he is into right now is Planet Heroes.

My DH got him into the old Justice League shows he likes all the super heroes too (Batman, Superman, Spiderman). I don't mind him watching the one's from when we were kids becasue they were more camp than violence. HIs favorite movie right now is the 1966 Batman Movie with Adam West & Burt Ward:confused3 :rotfl2:
