I've seen people only put 'bump' on their page. I'm new at this and don't know this language. It's been hard trying to figure out what to call everything!
The web is great but it takes time to learn how to communicate!

It's there to move the post up in postion. Perhaps it was close to going to the next page.

Phrasal Verbs:

To murder.

But in our case, it simply means to bring a post up to the top

So that means that if I went to that thread about the points chart, that has 70,000 readers (now what are they refered to in here?) and I typed 'bump' then my wording (again, that must have a special name) would go right to page one??
I think I'm still missing something.

If you go to any thread on the second, third, or 50th page, just putting bump as a response, (no need to say anything else) moves it up to the first page.

They are bumped back to the top or to the first page because the threads are in order of the most recent reply.

So that's like cutting in line?

Sorry I'm being so dense!

Nope, it just puts the post back at the top of the first page. Many people don't usually read past the first page unless they have been away for a while. On real busy days a thread can drop off the page in the same day. Usually, it is when someone has posted a question that hasn't gotten an answer, but is in peril of dropping to the next page that someone will bump it.

And it has nothing to do with the word bump. Anytime you post anything on anyone's thread it goes to the top. Even if you just said... boogers.
:)

Edit: The reason a thread moves to the top when posted to is it makes it easier for all to know when a thread has a new post.
