Hi everyone. Need some quick advice. We fly out on July 9th out of NY to Orlando. My niece is going with me and her 2 boys. One is 13 and the other is 3.

What type of ID is necessary for the kids? We haven't flown since 9/11. All our trips have been cruises and we just brought the kid's birth certificates, but for the 13 year old we had to have a letter from the cruise line filled out by his father and notarized giving his permission for the 13 year old to go.

Do we need the same type of letter for him to go to Orlando? If we need a letter from his father giving permission for him to fly to Orlando, is there a special type of letter from the airlines or just a general letter that his father would write and have notarized?

Thanks for any info.

My children have different last names as me and I didn't need anything from their dad to fly with them last August. They are 8 and 9. At 3 and 13 they don't need ID at the airport.
HTH =)

Divorced mom of 2 - flown solo with both DD ages 14 and 16 several times since divorce -- different last names than mine - no issues. I've never had to have ID for them

As everyone has said, nothing at all. Also, no one at an airport for a domestic flight will even look at the types of letters you are talking about. They are are too easy to fake. They may cause more trouble than anything.

The reason that you needed all that documentation for a cruise was because you were leaving the US, and kids under 16 cannot do that without the absent parent's notarized permission, unless the parent they are traveling with has paperwork to prove sole custody. (Note that for international travel this counts even if parents are still married; I can't take my kids alone to visit my family abroad unless I take the same sort of notarized letter proving that their father is aware of and OK with where they are going. Immigration at our destination country will not let them enter without it.)

Domestically, none of that is needed at all. If the children were travelling only with you and their mother was not going, then I would advise a notarized temporary power-of-attorney so that you could authorize medical care in an emergency, but with one of their parents with them, that isn't needed either.

NotUrsula covered the reason your niece needed paperwork on the cruise. So I will add, based on the title of the post, the boys will also need a plane ticket :lmao:.

Good luck and have fun! :)

Based on the title, What does a 13 year old of divorced parents need to fly at an airport, I would say that wings would be more useful!
