What do your older kids 7-11 like about Disney?

Alex is a cool kid, and one that "gets" Disney. Tell him the other kids just aren't cool enough to admit how much fun it is yet!

My ds is 9 and we're taking him to wdw for the first time in a couple weeks. He's VERY excited and his friends seem to be quite jealous. I borrowed the book Birnbaum's Disneyworld for kids by kids about a month ago and gave it to ds to read. He saw PLENTY of things he's interested in doing. He's a coaster nut and we made it clear to him that wdw is not a place for tons of thrill rides, but he saw lots of things he wants to do. We visit Cedar Point every year, and that's his idea of an amusement park.

I'm surprised to see that children his age in other communities find wdw "uncool". We're a working class/middle class suburb and going to wdw is a pretty big deal here. In fact, a lot of my friends think I've "sold out" by deciding to go there. LOL!! On the other hand, a friend of mine teaches 1st grade in a nearby very affluent suburb. Many of her students have been going to wdw every year since birth, so maybe (for SOME of them) it gets to be old news by the time they're 6. Kind of sad.

I love all your posts!! I agree, it is the family memories that count - and the time spent together as a family that will be most important.
I am going to get the Birnbaum's guide for kids and try and get him a little more excited. I also have a lot of hope that once we get there (away from his friends who think Disney isn't cool) he'll have a great time.
Our other kids (DS age 7 and DD age 4) can't wait. Come to think of it, I can't wait either!! We'll have to go to Disney quest, we've never been, and I bet he will love the TOT and RnR Roller Coaster.
Last night I had to promise him that he would not have to hug any characters - we'll see what happens when we get there. I'll keep you posted!!! I'll let you know in about 90 days when we get back!!!

Wow...I would be so sad if my DD's didn't love WDW!! We went for the first time last year - they were 7 and 9. This was after many years of wishing and dreaming! Their jaws dropped as the train at MK pulled in with the characters and they were totally caught up in the magic the entire time...what a joy it was to experience things through their eyes. We had planned to go again in four or five years, but we'll be back next May! They talk about it all the time and it has become so special to them - just as I had hoped! Here's hoping the magic lives on in them as it does in me!!! I'll bet even big kids with attitude can't resist lightening up once their in the WORLD!!

Now, that said...maybe some kids go too often and then it isn't so special anymore??? Please don't blast me - I LOVE WDW, but I'm just curious. We can only go on one nice vacation a year, so we spend most of them visiting other great locations. Our first WDW trip was amazing, and we're going back for sure after a two year break - my children will be thrilled and appreciative. Just wondering about some kids who visit WDW once or more a year? Could it lessen the thrill? Is there a place your child really WANTS to visit and has a real interest in? I, personally, was a surly 12-14-yr-old if EVER there was one, but I remember famly vacations with fondness even during those years! Good luck!
