not as concerned with sand ( although someplace i got about a dozen specks on my sensor grrrrrr but i didn't change lenses last time i was at the beach) more thinking the wind driven saltwater ....last time we were in the area the waves were huge and this time there are surfing contests the weeks around when we are going so thinking they must be expecting similar conditions...i'd like to go out on the jetty to take photos but know last time i got soaked...so definitely need some camera type protection...has anyone used a bag type of thing?i don't really want to sink money into a underwater type protector when it not being submerged but would like something to protect from the spray..i was considering rigging up a ziplock bag but can't figure out how to attach the uv lens to hold the bag close to and protect the lens front with out having a bunch of junk in front of the lens....don't know if a rubberband would be strong enough.....so any ideas...cheap ( since hub just totaled my beloved 10 yr old 230,000 mile saturn today, sniff, i won't be spending a lot for camera stuff in the near future)

great ! that is about my budget:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: thanks i'm going to order a few and see how they work

Jan,

Hopefully your husband is ok.

Did he total it in an accident, or did he just say "hon, this thing is totalled". That stinks to have to lose a car that you love. Does that now make me the only person on this board with a mid 90's Saturn with over 190,000 miles on it? I hope not.

By the way, how often did you have to put oil in it? At the rate I'm going, it would be cheaper to buy a new car, I think!

no the insurance company said it was totaled. he was only going about 15 mph but hit the back of a truck:scared1: he's fine and their truck is fine but the car isn't:rotfl2: i was really hoping to get to 250,000, just cause i have never had a car last that long and it still looked fine, hasn't needed hardly any repairs( i think we hit the $2000 mark last summer, but that includes tires, etc):lmao: it has always used oil more than normal i thought but more so the last yr or so. like we had to put some in every week or so..hub was going to get something fixed to help that but...too late now!

Not terribly helpful, but if the kids are with me, I just bring my p&s when we go to the beach.

It's not a saturn, but we still have a 93 camry with 230k miles on it.

they total cars when repair cost exceeds car value, but sometimes it's worth it to buy it back and fix it yourself, depending on the damage..

I've done that twice already, both times it cost me 200 dollars to buy the car back. I found my parts in a salvage yard, replaced them myself, and actually made money in the deal...

Jann,
The OpTech rain sleeve looks interesting, it's cheap enough :lmao:

I have two of those things - for when we go out storm spotting - although I haven't needed to use them yet. If you do get one or two and acutally use it let me know how it worked.

Sorry to hear about your car - as a proud member of the Saturn family ;) I am so sorry for your loss... BUT have you checked out the new Saturns lately?

Most importantly though - glad your hubby is OK.

Just by placing my loaded camera bag in my car, I increase the cars value by about 10X! I can't wait to get rid of the Saturn, but it hasn't really done me wrong so I can't justify it yet.

i just got my mom's old car when she got a new one( she is truly one of those little old ladies who only drives her car to church, except in her case she only drives it to the mall.the mechanics who change her oil etc were standing in line for dibs on her car but i had more pull being related I guess:lmao: ) so husband really needs one...he wanted a jeep, guess he feels manly driving it:rotfl: really he needs something larger since occasionally he carries his ladders to work...it looked kind of strange with a giant ladder in a tiny saturn but with gas so high it was helpful. i like the vues but since it's not for me i guess i have to go by his decision;) step father is getting one of the new vues though so maybe i can get in line for that one next since he only drives slightly more than my mother:rotfl:

I have my eyes set on a Toyota of some sort. Corolla or Camry. Either would be fine by me.

I have carried my canoe on the Saturn. Sometimes great distances! It looks funny, but it does the trick. I think it is even slightly longer than the car itself. Like I like to say "whaterver works".

My sister has an older VUE and really likes it. I'm not so fond of it but it seems to be just fine and is quite reliable. She really racks up the miles on it and it hasn't failed her yet.

Oh yeah, by the way, I have no idea what to use at the beach for your camera. If those bags work well, I may be interested in them too since the beach is less than a mile from home here. I worry when I bring the camera down there when it's windy. Otherwise, I don't worry much.

Hubster has a VUE and it has been a great car for him. It is what we take out storm spotting - cause we are NOT taking out my loaded Relay - no way no how - it's my baby. ;) No hail damage on my baby.

since this has gotten way off track, i forgot what i asked:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: daughter has had 2 camrys and loves them younger daughter had a camry that lasted almost as long as my saturn ( was older daughter's then younger "inherited it"). we are not "car " people which was what impressed me about the saturn...even with neglect it still kept ticking:)

i'm getting those bag type things in a couple days since everything else i could find is 6x the price...maybe if i lived by the ocean it would be worth while to get the more costly one ( and it mentioned you could still use your camera in the rain which might be nice sometimes) so i'll let you know how they hold up...kind of picturing "saran wrap" in my head at the moment so hope that is wrong:rotfl2:
