Dr. Vogel's brachial tourniquet test would say otherwise.

Had to google it, but in a description of the test, I found this nugget:

This test produces similar results when we eat saturated fats from meat, dairy, olive oil, and so on. Although we might not feel the injury to the endothelial cells, if we eat this way--meal after meal, three times a day, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, decade after decade--it is not surprising that with those repetitive injuries to the most delicate cells in our arteries, teenagers and young adults already begin to develop this disease. It universally affects all people by the time they are in their middle and late 60's.

"meal after meal, three times a day, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. . . " is not moderation by any normal definition of the word. As I said, having it a couple times a year is something your body can generally handle - eating it three times a week is something else.

Sorry, I don't buy that for a second. They can post what they want. There is no way that the Original Recipe version has less that 1,000 calories.

According to Huffington Post, the Vancouver Sun did an independent calorie analysis for the "Double Down" and concluded the "sandwich" has 1228 calories.

They did not actually do an analysis of it (it isn't available in Canada). They took the nutritional information for the various components from the KFC website at added them together. They repeatedly state that they were estimates - not all the components are on the KFC site, so they guessed at some and used substitutions for others.

In a follow up, they state that they used the information for two chicken breasts, for example, but the sandwich is made with two chicken fillets - bringing the calorie count down considerably.

Fair enough, but no one outside the KFC company believes this to be a sub-600 calorie sandwich.

I agree that nobody is going to eat the KFC double down everyday. But many people are consuming high fat foods on a daily basis and just a few bites is enough to set the process in motion. This is part of an interview with Dr. Esselstyn. I first read about Vogel's test in Esselstyn's book.

Dr. Vogel did a thing called the brachial artery tourniquet test. And in simple terms, the test consists of an ultrasound probe being placed over your brachial artery, and you’ll get a reading, you’ll get a certain diameter. Then for five minutes a blood pressure cuff will encircle your upper arm, inflate it above systolic blood pressure, so that for five minutes there is zero blood flow to your forearm.

Then the cuff is released and you re-measure the diameter of the brachial artery. And in the healthy, normal setting, the artery will, dilate 50 percent!

Now, Vogel did a brilliant thing. He and his team took a group of young subjects to a certain fast food restaurant. One half of the group got cornflakes. Their brachial artery tourniquet test stayed normal. The other group had hash browns and sausages.

120 minutes after the meal, they were unable to dilate their artery with the brachial artery tourniquet test.

Well, after what would it be, five or six bites, and what had happened was that the products of the hash browns and the sausage, that meat and saturated fat, had so assaulted, had so injured the endothelium that it couldn’t make enough nitric oxide to dilate the artery.

Dr. Esselstyn (m):
And I think that we can both imagine that although those young subjects had recovered a number of hours after that meal of hash browns and sausage, and the brachial artery tourniquet test eventually, maybe, returned to normal, just imagine the next morning they’re going to have scrambled eggs and bacon.

At lunch, they may have white bread with mayonnaise and cold cuts. And for supper, they’ll probably have baked potato, sour cream, vegetables soaked in butter, lamb chops, ranch dressing and maybe ice cream for dessert.

Well, just think of the absolute assault and injury to the endothelium!

It looks absolutely DISGUSTING to me.:scared:

As I was taking the poll, the commercial for the Double Down came on. :confused3 I can't imagine eating that.

I don't eat KFC so I will never have one but on the Today Show Hoda Kotb said it was delicious. So there's that:rotfl:

Who the heck does the marketing for KFC? First that disgusting bowl, now this??????? I love a nice fried chicken meal but this is yuck:sick:

Honestly this is fairly healthy compared to most newer fast food options. I've actually had one and it was pretty good. Very filling. Loaded with protein, too much fat and sodium, but compared to other fast food not bad.

Most taco salads at Taco Bell are just a notch below 1,000 cals. A double at Wendy's has 750 cals, and a good amount more fat. The Baconator Double has 980 cals and nearly double the fat. A Whopper has 720 cals. Etc. The Double Down is more filling than this stuff and it's hard to argue that it's not better for your waist.

Hey.....I liked the bowl, then I read the nutrition info and decided it wasn't worth the calories.

Comparatively speaking, it may be better than the alternatives. That doesn't make it healthy though. Some people will do anything to justify fast food. Not saying you do, just in general. I have a friend that insists hamburgers from McDonalds are one of the healthiest foods out there. Well yes, compared to other fast food options I would agree. Does that make it healthy, no. Should you eat that all the time, absolutely not. She seems to think you can

I have not tried it and I don't want to try it.

One of their grilled chickens have more sodium than is even close to healthy. Double that is just twice as deadly. No thanks.

Although I would enjoy a piece of chicken....I dont want 2 pieces with cheese and bacon in between. Nothing about it sounds appealing.

I don't normally eat at KFC anyway, maybe once a year or if I'm with a friend who just really wants to go. Even then I can stomach about one piece of it. I hear they have grilled chicken now. I've never tried it but am happy they at least have that as an option. I'm trying to stay away from food that just makes me feel like crap anyway, and KFC will do that to ya!

We don't have this in Canada, but I wouldn't be trying it anyways. Not only do I think it looks disgusting... it looks really messy to eat! For those who have tried it, don't your hands get all chicken-y?

I think of "healthier" fast food as "light" cigarettes. Just because it might be healthier than other fast food doesn't mean it's healthy!

Too much meat. I don't like to eat that amount of meat at one sitting.

KFC Original Recipe® Double Down: 540 calories, 32 grams of fat, 1380 mg of sodium
KFC Grilled Double Down: 460 calories, 23 grams of fat, 1430 mg of sodium

From the KFC website.

I was actually surprised at the relatively low calorie content of these sandwiches, but that is a LOT of sodium.

I never go to KFC - the only one in my town closed a year ago, not that I ever went there - so I'll likely never be "tempted" by the Double Down.
