We leave Monday for Quebec City. I am a chaperon for Sarah's high school French Club so there will be a dozen teens in our group.

Between puddle-jumpers (HATE then), two layovers, and three flights total we will be traveling around ten hours each way with no meals served on any of them - Airport food in Houston and Newark.

I plan to carry my old faithfully backpack and Sarah will carry one too. I was just making a list of what not to forget and thought I would pick your brains.

So, what do you pack for a day of plane travel?

If I CHECK a bag...

In my carry-on, I pack my make-up, brush, deodorant, curling iron, hairties, extra undies, something to wear to bed, and a days worth of clothes (jeans, a shirt, and underwear, plus socks if it isn't summer.) Basically the essentials I would need that the hotel/airline wouldn't provide in the event of a lost checked bag.

I also pack a book, a magazine, and my iPod and its charger, my camera, and my phone charger.

(There is always gum and Advil in my purse.)

I always carry a clean pair of undies and sox, clean top, all essential toiletries (toothbrush, deodorant, hairbrush), tylenol, book, purse, music, cell and charger

I dont lug a huge carry on with me like many people do, I just have enough to survive if I have to for 24 hours incase my checked luggage is delayed or lost.

A backpack is plenty big enough for that.

Kindle
iPod
Laptop
cords
camera
candy
salty snacks
lotion
make-up
facial cleansers
tissues
sweater (the biggest one I have that can double as a pillow)
change of undies (top and bottom)
Rx's or OTC meds.
spare socks (ever have someone spill an airline's amount of soda in you and because you are sitting, it ends up in your shoes? :thumbsup2)

and depending on the arrival location, a complete change of clothes in case luggage gets lost.

an extra change of clothes, any kind of meds i might need, if i have a layover i usually get a few small bottles of shampoo to put in(incase there's any possibility of loosing the luggage), any electronics i'll be bringing with me, make-up

Change of underwear. Swimsuit if going somewhere tropical.
Meds of course, and my camera, computer etc.

All of our RX meds which can't be easily replaced, a book to read on the plane, cameras/batteries, hand wipes, small sunscreen, sun glasses, extra regular glasses, phone charger, etc....
ETA: I also bring a deck of regular cards and/or Uno. It gives us something to do while waiting for our flight.

Traveling with a bunch of high school girls for that long I would make sure I had plenty of tampons and pads along with a lot of advil. I would have several decks of cards, a couple extra books and maybe a travel game or two.

For that length of travel time, number of plane hopping...

I'd carry undies, toiletries, my snacks and however I plan to be entertained on the flight as well as anything of necessity that you simply cannot lose or be without when you arrive at your destination (like prescriptions).

I'm all about the back-pack, but it depends what goes in it.

Typically:
I-pod and Blackberry plus chargers.
Hand santizer
Some usually not allowed junk food.
A book.
Spare shirt-even when I'm returning home.
A oversized scarf, I always freeze on the plane.

For that many hours I would toss in protein bars and trail mix. At least that way you have something fairly healthy to munch on.

I always have a change of clothes, undies, deoderant and my make up. But after the last time I flew I was so thankful to have an extra pair of shoes in my carry on. During a connection when I exited the plane, someone had decided to spit their gum out in the aisle of the plane  and I was lucky enough to step in it. Needless to say, those shoes really came in handy that day!

Glasses/prescription sunglasses (depending which I'm wearing)
Prescriptions
Camera/s (two, tops)
Spare Crocs
Three pairs underwear
Feminine hygiene products
T-shirt for sleeping
Travel size toothpaste
Toothbrush
3.4 ounce shampoo
3.4 ounce conditioner
antiperspirant
complete change of clothes
book
magazines
On the return trip, the clothes and Crocs go in checked luggage, and cigarettes purchased for less than half of what Massachusetts charges goes in the carry-on ;)
ALL that fits in a bag that fits under the seat in front of me.

Gold Bullion if flying Spirit ;) sorry , could'nt resist.

I just put the minimum in my bag, a change of t-shirt, undergarments, socks, contact case/solution, toothbrush/paste, hairbrush, camera/charger, cell phone charger, glasses, magazine, pen, small note pad and m&m's ( my travel staple) if I can fit, pj's that fold really small.
I wear a hoodie as I always get cold on the plane.

now ask me about my purse.......:rolleyes1

Thanks for all the advice. Usually I try not to stuff my backpack but with all those kids (boys and girls by the way) I think I'll need to try and be prepared for anything!

When I went to England for a winter term by junior year of college on the way there we all packed extra undergarments, clothes, toothbrush and all of the recommended things in case luggage gets lost.
On the way back all of us opted not to do this figuring we would be good. We got stuck in Atlanta for 17 hours without our luggage. Won't make that mistake again!

Definitely what everyone else said. anything you could possibly need if your luggage gets lost.

I usually use a backpack for my carry on too.

In it:
Cell Phone Charger
Meds
Camera
Book or two
Sweater or sweatshirt (unless I'm already wearing one)
Spare glasses
Laptop

That is it......I know one of these days I'm gonna get caught w/o a change of clothing when I desperately need it but I cannot stand lugging a huge overstuffed carry on around w/ me.
