What do you photograph at Sea World?

I'm taking DDs (12 & 10) to Orlando - leaving on Friday. We will spend only 4 days down there, and NONE of them at WDW :headache:. We're spending 2 days at Sea World and 2 days at Acquatica.

I don't plan on taking my camera (Canon 50D) to Acquatica. I'm going to make-do with disposable water proof cameras......oh the tradedy of that! :lmao:

I have been to Sea World, ONE time.....about 25 years ago, when I was in middle school.....so for the sake of argument, let's just say I've never been.

When I go to WDW, I have a list of must-takes and want-to-takes, etc. I've no idea where to start at Sea World. Do I need my 100-300mm lens? I really don't like to shoot with it, it's heavy to lug around all day, but I'm afraid that I won't get "good" pictures of the shows without it.

Do I need to bring my tripod for nighttime shots?

Would some of you post examples of pics that are possible at such a foreign park - along with your written ideas - if you have any?

I know I mentioned my 100-300 lens, thought I'd share what I will be carrying for sure:

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 (this is my walk around lens)
Tokina 10-17 f/3.5 fisheye
Sigma 30mm f/1.4
External Flash

Thanks!

The 100-300 would come in handy in the stadiums shows (especially if you want to sit clear of the splash zone). You can leave it in a locker and grab it before going to the show.

Hadn't thought of the locker option. I typically just lug my stuff all around with me - or rent a stroller to carry it (my tripod is H-E-A-V-Y!).

This trip I'm super psyched to have my shootsac rather than a full on camera bag. My load will feel soooo much lighter this time! I've already packed a ton of ziploc baggies down into it just in case we come near water, lol.

Any suggestions on what to photograph?

If you bring the 100-300 you will get use out of it.

The animals will often be too far away even for the 75mm.

This was taken with my 28-75 (at 66mm)

I switched lenses and got these...

here are shots I took 2 years ago,

the first folder I had my 28-75 2.8 and my 80-200 2.8 lenses

the second day I had my 28-75 2.8 and my 28-300 lens

if you mouseover the upper right hand corner of individual pics you can see the exif data to see the focal length

I went with my 2 kids. Rides were not a big deal to us, so we skipped the long lines. We were there for the shows. Get to the shows early, especially the sea lion one. The entertainment prior to the show is funny (if they still do it-the pirate guy). Catch this one early in the day, and then go back later in the evening to catch the spoof version of all the other shows in the park once you've seen them. Definitely pay the extra bucks to feed the dolphins too if you like them. Do this early in the am too as they might get full later in the day and not be interested. A wide angle lens will be helpful here as they will come right up to your hand and take fish out. Just watch out for the other wild birds lurking as they will swoop down and get the fish before the dolphins! On a final note, a circular polarizer will help see into the water, cut glare, and help with aquarium shots. It can make the water look bluer too.

What I shot: wild birds lurking around every where looking to score some food, exhibits, and mainly the shows (lots of action). We also saw the night time Shamu show (not sure if they still do this) and the fireworks, so a fast lens will help there.
