What do you eat?

Curious what everyone eats before and after a long run... :surfweb:

I've discovered I can tolerate oatmeal and sometimes a banana before I go out.

During my long runs I've been taking just water and Clif Bloks.

I'm at a loss for what to eat after a long run. Usually for my long runs I drive somewhere, so I'm looking for something portable to eat in the car. Bananas aren't enough, correct?

I bought a few of those Luna bars at the store the other day - they don't say they're for recovery, though. Does it matter? Is there something specific I'm looking for in a product? :confused3

I saw online PowerBar now has recovery bars, but my grocery store didn't have them.

Thanks!

I normally eat a bagel 45 minutes, to an hour prior to my LR.

During my run I use Gu gel and drink water.

Afterwards I have a banana, and then mix up my after run drink.

A scoop of orange flavored Accelerade, mixed with one scoop of vanilla whey protein powder. I also add some creatine and glutamine to the mix.

:)

Post run, you're really looking to replinish some of what's been spent. Typically, you need a mix of carbs and protein. I usually eat a Clif bar (yes, the energy bars) and some PowerAde. The Clif bar is only 245 calories, but supplies 45g of carbs and 10g of protein (most recommend you eat a 4-1 carb to protein ratio for optimal recovery). The other key is to drink/eat simple carbs quickly. Your body needs simple carbs after a tough workout (it procresses them quicker) then complex carbs after (within 1 hour, max) to further aid recovery.

Before a lr, 1/2 a plain bagel with peanut butter and a banana. Post lr, the other 1/2 of the bagel, scrambled egg and cheese.

my pre-long run routine is bagel peanut butter and banana. post run its generally what I have lying around. I find I crave a large spoonful of peanut butter and then generally a bagel or english muffin or somthing along that line.

I usually don't eat anything before or after a long run unless it just happens to occur with my typical mealtimes.

I do drink a 20oz bottle of Cytomax about 30 minitues before I depart.

During the long run (10 miles or more) I use gels or beans with water at approximately 4 mile intervals.

After the run I'll drink another 20oz bottle of Cytomax.

Before a long run I eat cereal about 1 hour before. If it is at least a 10 mile run I sometimes eat 1/2 a Cliff bar.

Post run I always have a Slim Fast (original) or a Boost (another breakfast type drink). They are both 4 to 1 carb/protein. Easy to digest and taste pretty good. I also drive to my LR's so I pack a cooler with the new Gatorade G2 and the slim fast.

When I get home I play it by ear. Just depends on what I am dong.
enjoy,
Duane

I am not a fan of peanut butter (I know... I am not quite right....). Any suggestions on protein before a LR? How about half a Clif bar and banana? Or maybe eggs and banana before heading out?

Know different people respond differently to meals before a run. Over the next few weeks I'll start coming into longer runs and this is all new to me so thanks for the help!

These Luna bars I bought have about 25g carbs and 10g protein - not a 4 to 1 ratio. Bummer. Calories 180.

Just checked out the new PowerBars online and they are around 30g carbs and 12g protein. Doesn't say what the calories are...

Before - PB & J sandwich. Chocolate. Ice Cream. Whatever. And a REALLY BIG cup of coffee.

After - I like to get some protein & Carbs. Usually a Cheese sandwich or maybe some sandwich meat with it.

If not that, a box of Ho-Hos or Twinkies.

Really, I eat like crap. And it probably hurts me in the long run (both literally & figuratively). I wish I had the discipline to "eat right", but it seems sugar is my drug of choice.

I DO drink some G2 post-run.

As I sit here thinking about the Klondike Bars in the freezer...............

I read somewhere that lowfat chocolate milk is good as a recovery drink and it's become my post long run snack of choice.
