Are at the parks. My daughter wants to bring hers to work on homework at night. But i am concerned about leaving it in our room during the day. What do you all do? Is it safe?

There have been a few posts over the years about laptops being stolen from resort rooms, but they are few and far between. I personally use a laptop security cable that I loop through a chair or other large piece of furniture.

Here's one that's available at Best Buy for $25.

Most laptops have a connection for a cable like this built into them.

Depending on the resort and the laptop, you may or may not be able to put it in the safe. Some resorts have very small safes, while others have larger ones.

Another simple precaution is to put the do-not-disturb sign on your door.

In 14 years of staying at DVC resorts, we have always left our laptops (yes we always have at least 2 with us) in the room. We don't leave them out in the open, but do put them in their brief cases etc. I figure if someone wants to steal something, locking it or hiding it isn't going to stop them. We've never had a problem with anything like that at Disney. Not that it couldn't happen, but it's highly unlikely.

Every time we've gone, we've left them in the room. We just make sure to put them away in our suitcases and lock them up in there, have never had a problem so far!

This is what we use also.

For a kid's or family laptop keeping it in the room is fine. For security, be sure you've locked it down and completely shut it off so no one will hack into it.

If you have a laptop with sensitive information on it or which has access to such systems then bring it to the front desk to lock it in their safe. VWL was happy to help me out. (I no longer have this problem with my new company.)

I trust the new electronic safes at Kidani and would have no issue leaving any laptop locked in there. Those wall safes are easy to pick... and a few don't close.

We just did a split stay between AKV-Kidani and BLT and my 13" MacBook Air fit with plenty of room to spare. When we were at OKW this summer, I just locked my computer inside one of my suitcases. I am pretty paranoid about this kind of thing, but no problem, so far.

Thank you so much for your replies! I appreciate all of them! I really don't want her to bring it but she is going to be missing four days of school and is being conscientious about her work so it is hard to argue with that. We are staying at Kidani so it sounds like the safe there might be big enough. And we are leaving the day after tomorrow!!! Yay!!!!

We leave them on the table in the room and put the Do-Not-Disturb sign on the door. We have never had anything stolen/missing from the room at DVC resorts.

:thumbsup2 I just leave mine on the table. We do not let the maids into the room over the whole stay so they really don't know what is in the room. Use to put it into a drawer and put clothes on it... Hide it in plain sight... If you have a case you can put it in the back of the closet and put stuff in front of it. DVC is a little better about having stuff stolen as the maids do not do a daily cleaning. So they have no reason to be in your room unless it is a cleaning day.

We also put ours in the luggage and lock it or sometimes just in one of the drawers with clothes piled on top. Never had a problem. The last trip at BLT and AKV Kidani the safe was where it went and mine is a 17" one.

We also just leave it sitting on the table, but on TT and cleaning days, just stick it in a drawer.

At AKV or BLT the safes are large enough to fit most laptops (even 17" MacBooks). We usually pack them away into our computer bag and lock it and then move it somewhere out of site like a closet. If you hook the lock around a chair make sure it's one that's really sturdy or difficult to move.

I just had visions of people putting the lock around a chair leg and a thief just lifting up the chair and taking the chain off of the chair. :rotfl: I imagine it does happen.

Our last few stays have been at BLT, and we can put the laptops in the safe. Plenty big enough.

I leave mine on the table/desk, at Disney and at other hotels, when traveling for business or pleasure. In almost 20 years of laptop usage, I have yet to have one go missing.

However, my machines are frequently backed up, and important data is easily accessible over the Internet at all times (either through Dropbox, Amazon's EC2/S3, Google Docs or Apps, or my own revision control system hosted at my office). So, I wouldn't lose "work", just some easy-to-replace hardware.
