What do you consider an excellent average for teens?

Well in general I'd say Excellent is an A. Fine is a B. Iffy is a C. But, there are lots of factors that could easily change any of these. When I was in high School, I was HORRIBLE at math. As long as I was passing, my parents were happy.:thumbsup2

I meant like number average like 1-100 and the overall GPA for the year ( not in just one class) I should have been clearer

To complicate matters if you need a certain GPA because your HS is competitive, then you are going to need high A's as opposed to low A's or a B.

So it will depend on your high school. My dd was in the 42% rank in TX with a 3.7 GPA. She moved to MO and was in the 22% rank.

I think the stakes are higher than when I was a kid. I would say 3.7 to be competitive as excellent (assuming 4.0 is the highest possible 0- that is our highest here. They don't change the formula for AP classes.) I would say 3.5 is a really good GPA, but it won't get you into our top state school. My understanding is 3.7 is what it currently takes to get in.

My oldest is very bright, but won't be in competition for top honors at his high school because he's had some A-'s.

We got his report card today and I'm sort of irritated. He got an A- in math, but the comment was "top student in the class." My son says he has consistently been the highest student all year. What does it say about your class if the top student can't get an A? (He got several "lower" grades and his GPA was in the 3.7 range. His Cumulative is still in the 3.9 range, but he was kind of sweating it because he feels if he goes lower he won't be competitive. I HATE the pressure kids are under these days. I keep telling him he has GREAT grades, but he doesn't see it that way.

Reason Im asking is I have a 96 average overall and I was wondering how that compares and what kind of schools take that

What it boils down to in that in order to have the excellent overall GPA when you graduate, you need to be in the top 10% at the end.

A 4.0 was not even near that in my dd's school in Texas. They had a 5.0 scale due to the enormous amount of honor students. Basically if you were not in ALL or mostly honors you were not going to be in the top 10%.

around here we have a weighed GPA I believe it goes up to a 4.5
I got a 3.33 becasue one AP class I ended with a C+ of a 79.9% and my teacher would not round. I'm still considered to be smart. Not in the top 10% but I'm around the top 40%. My school is either full of really smart kids or really really below average kids.Having anything above a 3.00 GPA keeps you in the top 50%. It really depends on your district, and your school. Sometimes you can find online what the average is at your school.

On an individual scale, it depends on the kid. Some kids just aren't great at academics. So, if my child was working really hard, doing their homework, studying for tests, and still getting a B or C, I'd be proud.

If my child is good at academics and gets all A's but takes a courseload that isn't at all challenging, then I'd be disappointed in their lack of initiative.

From a general standpoint, if my child had an average GPA of 3.5 or higher and was a good kid, I'd be pretty happy.

I have no idea what a 96 on a 0-4 scale is:headache:

Im taking 3 advanced classes and 2 honors classes, so Im not taking easy classes.

So is a 96 good? What kind of colleges would take that?

It totally depends on the kid.

As for what colleges look for, your overall average is only one of the things they will look at.

I would be less concerned with the number and more concerned with both the variety/types (advanced placement, Honors) of courses taken and community service hours accumulated.
Colleges are focusing MUCH differently than years ago.
A straight A student with regular classes
versus a
B+ or A student in AP classes is weighted very differently. Much more weight is given to the Advanced placement classes which are much more indepth scholastically.

96 with all A's is a 4.0 grade average. If its not all A's you didnt get an 4.0 average
4 pts for an A
3 pts for a B
2 pts for a C
1 pts for a D
0 pts for an F

if there is a + added to the grade, its an extra .5 points

In the end you add it all together then divide by the classes you were graded in.

You have to have more info. What yr are you? What is your overall GPA? What is your class rank?

Have you taken the PSAT or SAT yet? If you really know where you sit & find out what colleges are in your range take the SAT. Each college has it's criteria to what they accept.

These days, colleges look at a lot more than just grades or GPA. My daughter's college apps wanted to see extra-curricular activities, sports or club involvement, and community service in addition to GPA and SAT scores.

You should be able to check with your guidance counselor to find out what your grades translate into for a GPA. Then, you can go onto any college website and find out the average GPA for their incoming Freshman. Collegeboard.com is a good source for listing multiple colleges as well.

I just finished 9th grade, 96 was my overall avergae for 9th grade. All of my grades except one (stupid bio:headache:) were A's, and that one was a B. My class ranking is in the top 12 but I have no clue where. I'm taking 3 advanced classes, and 2 honor classes

I havent taken the PSAT's yet (i'll be taking them in october). I took the NEDT's and they predicted my ACT and SAT scores but I cant remember them off the top of my head.

I do a bit of community service at my church, I altar serve, and help out with dinners and other functions. Ive speant my whole life working on a farm and have experince doing farm work and learning values on the farm. I play softball and volleybal in school and am a member of SADD club.

Enough info?

My dream schools would probably be Georgetown and BC

honestly, at least around here. Colleges don't exactly look at freshman year. The one my school sends out is your overall 10-12 GPA.
