What do you buy at Disney gift shops?

Any clothing that I need at the moment (jacket, swimsuit, whatever I didn't bring), coffee mugs, Pandora charms, and anything that I think is unique that I have actual use for.
I saw a ton of all hoodies being purchased in February!

I think like you and tend to want my purchases to have utility which is why my thinking started with apparel, but I see your point about coffee mugs, etc.

Only things I really look at are the nicer clothing items. Tommy Bahama, Peter Millar, etc. More expensive but higher quality, and designs tend to have more subtle Disney touches rather than cartoony in-your-face stuff.
I like it and may take this approach! The 20% DVC or AP discount and discounted DGCs May bring the price down into the realm of reasonableness (for Disney).

I get a Christmas ornament from the resort each trip and write the year on the bottom, if we were celebrating something I write that too.

I also got a pin last time, but not sure if I’ll keep going with that.

The resort ornaments seem to be a very popular collectible and I can understand why. They are so beautiful!

We get a Christmas ornament each trip that we have personalized with the year or that represents something that happened on the trip. I also get a mug or Tervis cup….i have soooo many lol. Otherwise we just get whatever catches our eye. Each of our kids gets a Disney gift card with a set amount on it (usually $200-$300) for souvenirs and when it’s gone it’s gone.

Ok, I had to look up Tervis cup to find out what it was, but like Christmas ornaments you can never have too many!

Great plan for the kids spending. We take the Grands every other year and something like that may make a lot of sense for them in the future. They are ages 2,4, 6, and 8 so will probably start with a much smaller amount. At what age did you start doing that?

As soon as they were old enough to ask for stuff really. The 6 and 8 year olds should be old enough to understand the basic idea, with help. When they’re little I help them keep track of what’s left on the card and as they get older they do it themselves. And they know when’s it gone it’s gone. I also find they’re wiser with their money than they are with mine, lol. They’re less likely to make impulse buys and such when it’s coming off their card.

I'm currently on my third collection-

1. I used to collect Disney mugs, but when the shelves got too crowded, I went to a new plan.

2. Ornaments. But, for us at least, I've recently learned that we can have too many ornaments. Over the years, we've gotten a smaller and smaller tree, and we no longer use all our ornaments. So now, on to #3-

3. Now I recently started going to the Mi_ store in Japan (can't remember the full name) and buying 2-3 bags (or boxes) of candy. Next time I go, I buy 2-3 different kinds. We'll see how this goes.

For each trip I usually buy a pin of the resort that we stay in and a new spirit jersey.

On the rarer side- I collect the big tiki mugs from Trader Sam's. So far I have the first editions of the Nautilus and the Kraken bowls, and I think the second edition of the Uh-Oa bowl. I only buy them if there's a new style of bowl, not if there's a new edition or color. (If it's not obvious, Poly is our home resort!)

Towels. We like the bath towels (beach towels I guess) from the parks, resorts, and pretty much every vacation destination we go to. Our kids always know what to get us. Daughter visits Gold Coast Australia - towel, other daughter goes with friends to typhoon lagoon- towel. We use them all in our regular rotation of bath towels. Love seeing the memories of where we’ve all been.

This is an amazing idea! It's functional, not too bad to pack, and totally unique to each trip. It's also not the end of the world if the towel gets used up because you'll be getting another at some point. I think I might add this to my list too!
