What DID you want to be...

In Junior High I got my first taste of programming a computer on my Dad's HP somethingorother. BASIC. From that moment on that is what I wanted to do. But when I got out of high school I decided that the market would be too saturated and I figured if I did it for a job the "magic" would disappear. (You can tell I really loved it.) So I decided to go into accounting and even thought about engineering.

What am I now? A Web Developer. Yep, I'm a computer programmer. Funny how things work out.

The first thing I can remember wanting to be when I grew up was a math teacher (a 5th grade math teacher to be more specific because my 5th grade math teacher was an angel and I wanted to be just like her ) then I wanted to be an astonomer because I loved looking at the stars. Then i wanted to be a metoroligist, I was always mystified by the weather. Then after I went to WDW for the first time I decided that I was going to be Sleeping Beauty...I can't do that now because I've gotten too fat

Currently I'm about to become a court reporter...just waiting on the resuts of my certification test. If I don't pass it, I want to take off to Florida since you don't need to be certified to work as a reporter there

I wanted to be a vet. Then I realized I couldn't stand to see animals in pain.

Um... I think that was it -- in high school I decided I wanted to be a reporter, and that's what I'm doing today!

The first female astronaut! Someone beat me to that one AND I realized how afraid I was of flying.

Once I started playing with computers I knew that was what I wanted to do. But I have also always had a passion for helping others. These two passions came together when I started working for a Christian organization and worked my way over to the Information Systems department.

Now I work at a Christian radio station supporting the donor system. This really is the best of both passions for me!

I wanted to be a journalist...even did an internship with a local Business Journal my senior year in college.....

But alas, met a boy, went dumb, plans went astray and now I work in insurance........BORING!!!!!

katerkat.....we do have something else in common....DH (the boy who led me astray) is in the USAF, but he is a civil engineer....but funny enough....he wanted to be a pilot, got selected, but didnt pass the initial flight screening. Apparently the ability to land a multi-million dollar plane was important to the USAF

I wanted to be a Mom with 5 kids. And a math teacher. As a junior in high school, I had a math teacher who was terrible and I did really bad in the class. I think it shot my confidence and I no longer pursued that avenue.

I've held a number of different jobs over the years. Not sure I would call them careers. I worked in several banks for many years and could have had a really good thing going for me. But when I married my first DH he didn't want me to work so I gave that up and stayed home to clean house and wash his clothes and dishes (really stupid). Years into that marriage, I went to work for an insurance company as a secretary. Moved through the ranks to become a programmer/analyst. It was hard work getting there. Fortunately, I worked for a company who supported me in my education -- I even went to school 2 mornings a week to help me do the job I was promoted into doing. It was a wonderful opprotunity but just wasn't something I enjoyed doing. Also got divorced during this growing process.

After I married my current DH, I retired for an easier job -- become a Mom. Boy was I in for a surprise. While it's been the most rewarding job I've ever had it's also been the most demanding and very difficult at times. I now operate a home daycare business. In addition to my DS8 and DS3, I care for 4 other children full time. We keep busy and I'd have a hard time going to work for anyone else. I like making the decisions as to where we are going and what we are doing. And, I get to enjoy being outside and going to museums and the zoo with the kids. We go almost every day -- especially when the weather is nice.

I was born in Brooklyn & raised on Long Island....& had a neighbor whose daughter was an interpreter at the U.N. I was so fascinated by the car she drove, the clothes she wore & the fancy life she led, so I decided I also wanted to be an Interpreter at the U.N. (of course!) I already spoke Italian & I took French & got straight A's in it. I was on my way...then I found out that you had to know 7 languagues FLUENTLY & one of them was either Japanese or Chinese (been ages ago, can't remember the details anymore), so I threw in the towel.

Then I decided I wanted to be a nurse but once I realized I had to deal with blood & other bodily fluids/functions, I quickly changed my mind.

Although I have had some pretty fascinating jobs in my lifetime, I am no longer working due to becoming my mother's caregiver (she was diagnosed with cancer last July ), so I guess now I have fulfilled my dream of becoming a nurse, since I am a nurse to my Mother! I am also a mother of 2 boys (7 y/o & 18 months old.)

I always loved the life sciences and helping people. That never changed throughout my childhood. So during highschool I decided nursing was the career for me! I really enjoyed what I did when I was working. When I got pregnant with my first child I told everyone that I'd be back when the baby was a couple of months old. I have not been back to work in over 10 years. For years I could not understand why I did not have the urge to return to work as an RN. On day after pondering it I realized that I went into nursing primarily bc. I really enjoy caring for other people. As a mom I found out that the people I enjoy caring for THE MOST are my kids. So, for now they are my "career" and I feel very fulfilled. I will return to nursing when my youngest goes to school full time and there is no one at home that needs me.

I hope this doesn't draw any flame throwers. My intention is not to start a stay-at-home vs working-mom debate, so pleeeze don't. Be nice.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. But we only have one college in Texas that teaches this discipline and the application number has always been outrageously high. And of course the cost is extremely high too. My grades were pretty good but not good enough for a scholarship and we couldn't afford the classes so I had to give up on that dream.

I became an engineer instead but it's never really worked well for me. I've had good jobs lost through layoff and I've had jobs that I detested. I worked most recently as an underwriter for a car loan company. This company was a complete nightmare so I quit before I went totally berserk.

I think that it's high time to find the "right" thing.

I grew up in Long Beach, California, and since going to Disneyland was a regular part of my childhood, my dream was to someday captain one of the Jungle Cruise boats and spend my days driving guests through the attraction while making smart-*** comments. .


I never got a chance to drive the Jungle Cruise boats- but thanks to the DIS, I can now spend the day making smart-*** comments, so at least half my dream came true. .

I wanted to be a paleontologist or a paranormal psychologist, but those programs are a bit hard to find.

I'm currently working at a Network Operations Center, and going to school to become a historian.

I decided at age 9 to be an archaeologist. I took my degree in Anthropology with a specialty in Latin American archaeology and a minor in Sociology. The very next week I became a cop. I retired in 2001 after 26 years as a police officer.

Now I am a part-time WDW cast member.

I wanted to be a sports reporter for a newspaper.

Then I became a journalist and discovered that sports reporters only work at night and on weekends - because that's when games are played.

So I moved over to the city desk and became a cops/courts reporter.
Until I got a job running the paper's Web site.

So I'm still in journalism, but I've wandered all through the newsroom by now. Features, sports, arts, news, financial and now the Web.
