What did we miss?

We tried to book a stay at WDW with our points for later int the year and were told that there was no availability for those days.

As an anlternative we looked up what a Disney vacation package would be for those same days and lo and behold, the accomodations we were told weren't available are for sale!

Did we miss something in the agreements that allow Disney to pull inventory out of DVC membership and sell it outright?

DVC inventory and CRO inventory for the DVC resorts are kept separate. DVC owns some points which they rent through CRO, CRO also gets rooms when members trade out of DVC (example - the cruise). If there are any rooms left at 60 days prior, DVC can also make them available through CRO (and the income goes towards a dues credit known as "breakage"). CRO does not take rooms out of the DVC inventory. Since CRO availability is separate, it's possible they have rooms and DVC does not.

Just to expand a bit on DebbieB's answer -

Most (almost all) of the DVC rooms that you see available for cash on the Disney website come from members' "trade outs". For example, every time a member uses points to take a cruise or stay at a non-DVC WDW resort, DVC sends the equivalent number of DVC room nights to CRO/WDWTC to be rented out to the general public for cash. That's how DVC gets the money needed to pay for the members' trades.

I know it doesn't make you feel better about not getting what you want, but without that process, no one could use points for anything outside of the DVC resorts.

Unfortunately, other members called to make reservations before you did, so your dates are sold out. If you waitlisted, hope it works out for you.
