What did I miss at BOMA

Folks here seem to rave about BOMA. The one time we ate there we crossed it off our go back list. I found it an average Disney Buffet, with some strange bread, and a few unusual veggies. Noisy and crowded. I don't consider myself a foodie, so I don't think it's snobbery on my part. What did I miss that everyone is so impressed about.

We did love Jiko !!!

I always wonder this too...but then, there are places that get bad reviews on here by everyone that we love. So I think it's a matter of taste, and experience. Sometimes, you go on an off day. We weren't impressed with Boma either.

Interesting thoughts..But I'm still dying to eat there! My DB and his wife are die hard foodies and stay at WDW several times a year..they told me I must eat there..so I made ressies there for dinner for our trip in Sept. They enjoyed the unusual soups and salads at Boma especially..I love hearing about everyone's experiences god and bad on this board..my DB gave this link as Iam a Disney rookie

the soups are all wonderful. Pretty much worth the cost on their own.

It is a buffet But imo it is one of the best. After all it did score only 1 or 2 less point than Jiko and Claifornia Grill in Zagats believe it or not. I think it is a matter of taste. Possibly it was an off day.

Haven't been to Boma in a while, but did like their selection. DW found interesting fare on the children's buffet (can't go wrong with mac n cheese or chicken fingers).

We were there last week and it was ok. They didn't have chicken fingers that night either, they had chicken wings which I thought was a little odd. We had tried Biergarten the day before for lunch and we liked it a whole lot more. It is each individual tastes, but OP you are not alone.

We tried it last August. I loved the soups and desserts. The soups are very tasty. My DH wasn't impressed. I don't know if it was the flavors, or the incredibly hot day at AK or our wobbly table. I would go back this summer but DH thinks my buffet loving family wouldn't like it because of the different flavors, some sweet, and some curry. I would like to try Jiko's someday.

We enjoyed breakfast more....we crossed off dinner. We were so excited about this Ressie and were the most disappointed with it. We did love the soups, though. I think for us it was just to much spice in the food.

My friends love Boma but it just doesn't look great to me. They rave. I'll have to try it one of these trips.

We love Boma! To us it's the best buffet on property without a doubt. There are so many different choices and flavors that you will not find at any other WDW buffet.

Another Boma fan here! I've eaten at Jiko's a couple of times and I don't see why it gets the raves here on the DIS that it does. We prefer Boma over Jiko. We love the soups, desserts, great salads, and ribs.

I really like Boma, but I love African food. The bobotie is pretty good there, as are the salads, soups, different types of african bread and dips. I'm not a huge fan of buffets, as I just prefer to be served at a table, but I make an exception for Boma.

I loved the atmosphere. The restaurant is beautiful and it doesn't get much better than the AKL. That's the good.

There was a lot of bad. The service was horrendous. It wasn't very busy, just that the poor waitress seemed to have to service way too many tables. Our whole section was pretty much ignored. The table next to us got very upset and ended up leaving unhappy.
The food was not good at all. I liked the seasoning, it was the food quality that was lacking. Things that should have been served hot were left cold. The carved meats were fatty and cold. The breads and pastries were dry and tasteless. I was not impressed.

We visited this restaurant with high expectations. I read so many glowing reports on this board so I know I probably experienced an off day. I would probably give it another go just for an excuse to spend some time at the AKL.

Dis Ohana- Sorry you had a bad experience. DW and I have had many dinners at Boma over several years, and have always had excellent service and food quality. Perhaps you just hit it on a bad night? That can happen anywhere.

I was just sitting here thinking about that. We ate at an odd time, I don't remember exactly when it was but I think it was late morning. The restaurant wasn't full and this might possibly by why the service was lacking too. Maybe I caught them at a transitional time and food was left a little longer than usual and the floor not fully staffed. My experience just doesn't seem to jive with the majority on this board.

We love Boma too Like the pp said, perhaps you caught it on a bad night or maybe Boma's just not for you - we went to Ohana for the first time on our last trip, me and my Mum loved it but my Dad just didn't get it

Some of the great stuff:

Mt Kilamarita drink. Yum

Prime rib. Best of anywhere we've been at disney. Anywhere.

Coconut curry salmon. To die for.

The rest is simply good. But when you've been at disney for a week or so, eating their food at so many places, and lets face it it all seems the same after a while, Boma is just so refreshing!

Oh, so you had breakfast at Boma, not dinner ~

We love dinner at Boma. It's always a *must do* for us on every trip. Hadn't done breakfast there for ages but on our June trip we did both dinner & breakfast. There was a distinct difference in the quality of service in the morning vs evening. ~~ Morning wasn't so great I also thought that some of the food was left out a little too long.

If this breakfast had been out first Boma experience we probably wouldn't be back. IMO dinner is a far better experience. Plus there are more unusual & distinctive offerings at dinner.
