Considering staying at DD hotel for first time ever. Royal Plaza has great rate through MouseSavers.
DH cannot walk long distance without stopping (uses cane).

Wondering if walk from hotel to Market Place is too far for him.
Which of the DD hotels is closer?

Can anyone compare the walk from DD hotels to Market Place with the walk into any of the parks from the Disney bus stop at that park?

The Hilton is right across the street. So is the Wyndham Palace. Royal Plaza is a bit further, and would be quite a walk. Don't those hotels have bus service to DD?

Thought it might be quicker to walk to Market Place if bus service isn't that great.

Also when taking bus back to MarketPlace from parks/resorts could walk back across the street to hotel if it's not a long (or uphill) walk.

On map you really can't tell how far it is. A short walk for some is long for him, lol

You might check to be sure, but I think they have discontinued bus service from DTD to the parks as too many people were parking there and using the buses to go to the parks.

The bus service from the Market Place does go to all of the resorts. I think the walk from the bus service on the Marketplace side would be doable for the Hilton and the Wyndham with the Wyndham being the very closest. The others you are talking maybe a block or two further at the closest.

I've heard mixed reviews of the transportation from the DTD hotels. I stayed at a couple last October and even though I always drove my car (I was born in CA - can't do w/o a car it's in my blood) it seemed that there was always a bus pulling up out front. I think it would be easier to use the DTD bus transportation than to walk over to the Marketplace (where you'd probably have to go to a resort to transfer to the parks).

Unless it's changed since last summer, you're right, there is no bus service from DTD to or from the parks.

We stayed at the Wyndham in 2002 and it was a really quick walk to DTD. Our room was in the building right across from the pool and there was a pathway to the traffic light right across from DTD. It was a very short walk (maybe 3-5 minutes). Royal Plaza would probably be a 10 min walk. Could you get one of those canes with the little seat attached so he could stop on the sidewalk if needed?

Wyndham is the closest. However, it is across a major 4-lane road and you have to move fast to get through the intersection before the light changes. It's easy for an able-bodied person; not so for someone who walks slowly or with difficulty.

Hilton also requires you to cross that busy street and is second-closest; you'd add about the equivalent of 2-3 blocks to your walk.

Royal Plaza is across that same intersection, plus probably a half-mile walk uphill from Downtown Disney.

Personally I would highly recommend using the bus regardless of which hotel you choose. I think it would be really hard for a person with a cane to handle the walk.

Appreciate everyone's input. This is a great place for answers to anything.

I've decided it doesn't sound like DD is a good option regardless of price savings. (unless I want to carry DH, lol)

Guess we'll just have to suffer and stay in a WDW resort as usual.

Thanks again for your responses.

I agree with all the other posts, the walk from a DTD hotel to DTD would be long and treacherous.
The DTD Hilton is approx the length from the entrance of MGM to the Hat, or from the entrance to the Castle. (I am trying to give comparison length lol)
The walk across the street is tough even for those who are younger. Especially with the right turn on red, no one even stops at the red light.
Have you thought of renting an electric cart for your DH? I always rent one for my friend when we go to WDW from an off property company. The company will deliver the ECV to your hotel and pick it up when you leave. They take your charge card number and charge it, or if you are not comfortable giving your card # over the phone you can set up a time for delivery and they will take the card then.
I checked what it would cost here in CT to rent an ECV ($125 for a month) and made an offer of $100 for the two weeks we were in FL and the company agreed so make sure you don't take the first price offered, make them an offer.
If you would like I can send you the name of the company I work with, we have used them over 5 times already and recommend them highly. Peggie
