Perspective is a wonderful thing. I'm in my 50's now and in my first job after my 1st degree in my early 20'sI travelled quite a bit for work. I was told back then point blank to not "stiff" anyone incl housekeeping at hotels the company sent us to since it reflected badly on the company. Obviously we have always tipped housekeeping and had no idea that some considered it a non tipping position and that some do not do so. I mean I'm not surprised that there are people who dont tip housekeeping, (just like im not surprised some don't tip servers either)rather I'm surprised that some don't because they consider it to be a non tipped position. Could it be that it is written in the collective agreement as such because there are those who don't tip, as opposed to Dis expecting people not to ?
People consider it to be a non-tipped position because it is a non-tipped position.

Their wages reflect that it is a non-tipped position. Tipped positions make less than minimum wage. Housekeeping wages at Disney is above minimum wage.

I wonder if you would be comfortable staying at Sandals where tipping is strictly prohibited..exception is if you are staying in a butler room.

I know I wouldn't be comfortable (but that's because I hate all inclusives....lol)

All kidding aside though...whenever "tipping is included" for example, certain cruise lines, special dinners etc. we only provide an add'l gratuity if service is truly excellent. Then we will give an add'l grat unless the staff can get in difficulty accepting. In some resorts they have an employee fund set up that those who choose can contribute instead of direct tipping. Seen that in a few places like Yasawa Island.

According to you it may be a non-tipped position and according to approximately 30% of Americans acc'd to the research ive just done. Im glad to know im in the majority to the contrary.

Actually, it is according to the contract between WDW and the housekeepers union it's not a tipped position. We tip anyway just wanted to point out that fact.

According to Disney, Housekeeping is a non-tipped position at WDW. Bell Services, Valet Parking and Food and Beverage Servers are tipped positions.

However character buffet servers don't get paid at least $10/ hour it is more like $5/hour per their union contract. And I tip them just as much as I would tip any other server at a restaurant or buffet. It is based on the level of service they provide and the total of my bill. I don't think it is excessive or crazy.

To each their own.

Figure (conservatively) 3 tables of four per hour, at about $200/table. If everyone tips at the lower end of 18%, that's $108/hour, plus their token $5/hour pay. Not telling you or anyone else what they should or shouldn't tip, just applying your same logic to that scenario.

Wow.

No, according to Disney it is a non-tipped position. You know, the place that actually pays them. They say it is non-tipped.

If you want to tip, go for it. But please don't try to convince people of an untruth.

Excuse my ignorance, and I hope this isn’t too personal, but can I ask why you have upped your daily tips? I just was curious if it was something well known that I am just not aware of. I want to tip our housekeepers, but I also don’t want to tip too low and make it seem like we don’t appreciate their services!
Sorry for the delay--saw this post just now. I upped my daily tip because it felt right to me. Since I was tipping $5/day 10 years ago, I thought more was in order. Also, I leave $20 on the last day, since whoever cleans the room that day has a lot more work to do, getting it ready for the next guest. But it's totally up to you! This is just what I feel comfortable with. And I believe anything at all will be appreciated, since many people don't tip.
