What causes threads to be locked when there isn't any unpleasantness?

I was reading a long thread with great interest yesterday; the OP was getting calm, positive advice that is going to be invaluable to her as her daughter/kids grow up. There wasn't any flaming that I found, but now that I go back to catch up, the thread has been locked.

Is there a reason that this happens?

OP might have asked for it to be locked. I think I know which one you mean and I think she might have been getting overwhelmed with people telling her she was over-reacting. (I hope she took it to heart...)

There can be several reason.
1. We limit threads to 150 pages
2. The original poster requests that it be closed
3. It violates a guideline (not neccesarily nastiness)

I think the person asked for the thread to be closed...I might be mistaken though!

It wasn't that many pages, so the OP must have requested that it be closed. I hope she got her problems settled (yes, it was that *overreacting* thread).

I do think that when OP requests it to be closed, it is most often noted by the closer, as the final post on the thread, that the OP did request it to be closed so there is not a question of why it was closed.

Thank you Dan, but I would like to also point out that a lot of the time the OP might want the thread to be locked and die without any fanfair or post as to why - they just want to let the subject drop.

it's really funny you asked this question because I was thinking of asking the same thing today. I was part of a thread yesterday that got closed at the OP's request. No one was being unpleasant the OP just didn't like people were offering unsolicited advise. I thought it unfortunate at the time since the advise could end up benefiting others.

It always amazes me when people post something on an Internet bulletin board that thousands of people see asking for for advice, and then get mad when they get the advice!

Maybe people just get overwhelmed in a situation and just want to be able to step back from it with a new viewpoint after getting opinions. I'm sure the OP read the opinions, took them in the context of constructive critisism, and was ready to move on without rehashing the events.

I just got back and was reading that thread with great interest and wondered why it go locked too. I was dying to find out if she ever called the parents.....
