What causes these lights?

Besides the obvious overexposure making this a less than perfect picture, I am bothered by the 'extra' green and red lights in it. What causes this? I keep a UV filter on the lens for protection, is that the problem?

Most definitely the UV filter... even multi-coated filters will flare with something that bright.

It is not only the UV filter, but it also could be the lens itself that produces the flare.

The EXIF says 50mm f/1.8. That's a cheep lens, so I wouldn't be surpises if the lens itself caused the flare.

I wonder if the 50mm f/1.4 is any better.

That actually is kind of creepy. LOL (ask me about the photo I took in a Salem burying ground ... now...that's creepy).

Anyway, I have UV filter on my lens too and it has never produced those weird little green or red things or anything else like that.

I didn't get any extra spots or flares with my 50mm f/1.8 back on July 4th.
