what cat food for male cats

Our cats are now eleven years old. The two brothers Cobain and Gilmore had UTI problems but unfortunately we had to put Gilmore down because at 17 months he had kidney failure.
Cobain had the surgery at about three years old. He has been doing just fine since. Sometimes he tends to spend a little more attention down there at the 'hole' but after all the problems he had before it was the best money we ever spent. I finally asked the Vet what could I feed him besides Hills prescription food and he recommended Science Diet because it has more fiber thus making him more thirsty so he will drink more and keep the system clear. I feed all three cats that and now since they are eleven years old, I feed them the seinor dry. For a treat, I will sometimes give them canned food, but they do just fine. Every day I fill the water bowls up so I know all three are drinking.
our biggest mistake was by feeding them people food once in a while and that started the problems. So now only cat food and nothing else.

My male cat had a urinary blockage 2 months ago and a UTI, since then he has been on Hill's prescription c/d (what the vet sells). I leave the dry food out as I did the "normal" dry cat food and feed him canned food each night as I used to with fancy feast. It took him several days to eat the food normally, that's all he gets so he eats it. My older female cat also eats this dry food, she seems to like it. She absolutely refuses the canned food though so she still gets fancy feast, I just have to make sure my male doesn't eat her food. At first I was adding a little fancy feast and purina dry Urinary formula to his food to encourage him to eat it but my vet said not to, he really needed to eat this prescription food atleast for a year. We retested his urine and blood about 5 weeks after his episode and all of his results came back great.

This is what I have found through my own research on the internet and recommendations from our vet:

--give only distilled water to drink (about $1 a gallon at grocery store)
--buy a "fountain" as cats like to have running water, encourages the cat to drink more (I have noticed him drinking more since buying the fountain)
--do not feed any fish flavored foods
