Just got an offer in the mail and it looks really good.

12 months interest free on purchases. Is this all purchases?

$100 cash reward after 1st 1000 in purchases in the 1st 3 months. Does this come in the form of a check?

5% cashback on groceries, gas, restaurants, home improvement and more. Does this include travel?

I think we will be booking our first Disney Cruise soon. I would love to get $100 cash back and 5% back.

......it is my right hand man!!! Lol
More and mire places are starting to accept it. I do keep a MC (debit card) in my wallet as well just in case!

I really like my Discover card. I try to use my Disney Visa for all purchases unless it's for something that gives bonus cashback. The categories change quarterly (you have to enroll online, which only consists of pushing a button that says enroll...now you earn 5% instead of 1% on those categories for that quarter...super easy). Also, if you are doing some online shopping, go to their site and find the place you are going to buy online and click their link to take you to that retailer, you will earn additional cashback as well. Most of the time I use my cashback for their partner gift cards. For instance $20 will get you a $25 gift card. So if I know I can use a particular gift card, I will do that for the extra $5. During Christmas I've cashed in on several gift cards to give as gifts!! Of course that is all unrelated to the special offer they've given you, but this is an FYI for when the offer is over. I hope that all made sense! :)

I have had the Discover card since 1994, my first card in college. The 5% "bonus" will change every 2 months or so and you have to sign up (online) to get these, as they are not automatic. The rewards are in the form of cash (they can transfer it right to your bank if you like) or you can buy gift cards at less than face value online a well. The regular rewards (up to 1% back on all purchases) also can be received a cash or gift cards and they are treated the same as the 5% (all in the same total). Great customer service as well. The only places I have had a hard time using Discover are at small vendors who only take Visa or MC. I am guessing I can use it at 99% of the places I would want to.

Also, the 5% is capped at your first $1600 in purchases (I think that is the amount, but they are capped at about that level)

Last time we got our rewards, you could get it sent as check...
I believe that the bonus 5% catagories change every 3 months and sometimes it does incl travel (but not 100% positive on that one)

Oh yea, is it as widely accepted as Visa?

around here, "pretty much" as common as visa....

Not accepted in Mexico or the Caribbean...

I assume the same would apply to overseas.

I like my Discover card, but watch the fine print on the quarterly bonuses. The one for groceries is usually capped at $200-300 in purchases. I used mine in 2009 to pay for my trip to Disney and did get the bonus but the maximum amount was way less than the amount I charged. I was still happy to get some additional cash back but, not as much as I had initially thought.

The other issue with Discover (read it here) is that the yearly cash back does not go up to 1% until you get to $3000 in charges. right now I would only get .025% so I am using my Disney Visa or Chase Freedom.

I use Discover for just about everything. It is about as widely accepted as Visa, it is rare to find a place that doesn't take Discover, but I know there are a few places out there what won't. Seems like there are some local restaurants and stuff that won't.

One thing that makes me like Discover too is I find their website easier to use. I have a Chase visa, and it seems like a huge ordeal to just log in and pay. Discover has always been really easy to do.

I have Discover, MC, and Visa credit cards, and use different ones for various reasons, all with cashback award programs. Overall, I like Discover the best except for one thing.

The only thing I don't like about Discover is that it is tiered, meaning that the first X number of dollars you charge only gets 1/4 of 1%, then the next X number of dollars is at 1/2 of 1%, and then you finally get to the full 1%. I do however, sign up for the 5% bonus categories each quarter (once is a while they will also have a 1 month special category also). I then make it a point to use the Discover card if I am making a purchase in the 5% special categoy. Like someone else already mentioned, there is usually a cap on the amount that you can earn the 5% on -- eg the first $300 of groceries might get the 5%, but once you spend $300, then you only get the percentage based on what "tier" you're in, which might only be 1/4 of 1%. You start all over at 1/4 of 1% each year on your "anniversary" date.

I also am extremely impressed with their customer service. Their call center is in the United States, which is a HUGE PLUS for me. Only one time have I ever had a dispute with something I had charged, and that was with Greyhound Bus (who BYW has awful customer service). After trying to resolve it with Greyhound, I called Discover, and asked if there was anything they could do (The dispute was strictly between Greyhound and me). Discover immediately credited my account. I don't know what kind of follow-up they did w/ Greyhound, but I never got charged back for it. I have called several other times with questions, and the customer service has been great.

I also like the fact that when I charge something at Walmart, Jewel, or Dominicks I can get cash back. I use this all the time, as I seldom go to the bank.

I always use my earned "dollars" to purchase gift cards at a discount -- usually Staples or Ace Hardware, where you use $20 to get a $25 gift card. They also have a lot of popular stores where you can spend $45 to get a $50 card- like Kohls, CVS, most major dept stores, etc.

The Visa credit card I use is thru Chase Bank; it's an AARP rewards program, and get a straight 1% back on all purchases. I use this a lot for purchases that Discover does not have the 5% bonus for. I have called their customer service a few times with questions, and their customer service seemed very good, and I believe they were also in the US.

I also have a few Master Cards that I've had for years, but now only use them occasionally for small purchases, mainly to keep the account active. Their customer service is outsourced, and I have had big problems with their representatives every time I have ever called.

The 5% cash back on special categories has an $800 limit, so you get up to a max of $40 back.

The 5% cash back through their shopping partners (click through the Discover link to the online retailer) is unlimited. I didn't realize how many places I could have been getting 5% cash back: Banana Republic, Staples, Dick's Sporting Goods, etc. Make sure you always check before you shop.

This is great. How have I been missing out on this??? I charge everything I possibly can on the Disney Visa, might need to re-think that.

I just regot(long story) a Disney Visa and was planing to use that for everything until I heard about the Discover card.

So my new plan is to autopay every bill like water/power, phones, etc on my Visa.

Anything that gets mee 5% back will go to Discover

Any online which vary from 5-20% yes 20% will definetly go on my Discover. And the Disney Store is 5%

Anything at Disney that gets me a discount by using Visa goes on Visa

I think it will be an adjustment but hey I find it worth it in the end. If you spend $1000 a month thats $10 or $120 a year just for paying on a card rather than cash. And if you take that cash and simply PAY the bill each month you do come out ahead.

The $800 limit is only for the current quarterly bonus category (which is travel and restaurants). The quarterly bonus category (and sometimes there is a monthly category) always has a purchase cap and it is usually much lower than $ 800. $ 200 to $ 300 seems to more common. I only use my Discover for the 5% cash back (since the regular cash back is small) so I pay close attention to the caps and you have to look at the small print to find it. The grocery cap is especially bad - like $200 which is close to one week for me! Overall I like the card but the 5% bonus offer is deceiving.

You are correct per there site

http://www.discovercard.com/custome...e-calendar.html?hcmpgn=1005_HPU_LHN_CBB_TXT_1

Jan-Mar is $800 (travel)
March is $200 (groceries)

The others do not show a cap. But I would call and ask if I was going to do a major purchase at one of the catergories. We where thinking of doing WDW in 3 years in Sept. which is a 5% month for theme parks. It there is no cap then that would be a nice reward.

We used discover for a long while until their payment cycles got shady.

We were late twice--once, they processed the payment late. Okay, no harm no foul. The second time--we dropped them forever.

In the oddest chain of events:

*payments received after 5am--yep, 5 A.M. are not credited until the next business day.
*Due date was calculated to be Sunday, so for it to be "on time", it had to be there on a Thursday, to get in in time before the 5am deadline.
*Then there was a holiday thrown in the mix.

Anyway--we had our payment in by Wednesday. It was not processed until Tuesday---due to the 5am monday rule, Sunday is off, Saturday is not a business day, Friday was a holiday...or some craziness.

I figure a company that has "fake" due dates to squeeze late fees out of us, was not worthy of our business.

True story!

I don't know if they have changed, but I would be very careful. We'll never use them again.
