I know it's lack of iron but what causes it exactly? Besides iron pills and liver (GAG) how else can it be treated?

I'm alway tired... I can come home from work, sleep from 6pm-11pm and be back asleep for the night at midnight. It's a drugged out feeling. I thought it was related to mild depression but the doc said it is most likely from the anemia. Go Figure!!
I went to a "meet" the new doctor who ran a blood panel on me and said I am dangerously anemic but also my cholesterol is borderline high. :( (212 and they want it under 200)

Man I hardly eat as it is. And not a lot of meat products (maybe 1-2x a week if that and mostly white meat). I eat oatmeal daily.... :( which I thought was good for me (is Quaker fibbing??).

Not always an iron issue. A vitamin B12 deficiency will cause pernicious anemia and will also cause an elevation of cardiac enzymes (not necessarily high cholesterol). Have you found the source of your anemia. You need to do that first.

In addition to what Christine has said, your eating (or lack there of) isn't the whole cholesterol picture. Unfortunately heredity plays a big part in cholesterol levels.

Start thinking about what you're eating. Can you add iron in other ways? Can you restructure for cholesterol-lowering purposes?

Good luck, and good that you caught this.

Erin :)

In my case, my high cholesterol is genetic. I do try to avoid foods that would elevate it (anything with hydrogenated oils, for instance). I also take an essential fatty acid suppliment (Omega 3) every day, and this keeps my tryglicerides in check at least. I'll be going on Lipitor once I am out of my childbearing years. My mother, grandmother, and cousin are all already on it, and all have excellent diets and are also thin. High cholesterol can have many causes, and not all of them are dietary.

If you're dangerously anemic, I imagine your doctor would want to investigate that. You may be losing blood somewhere. At one time i was very anemic from heavy periods. Getting that under control cured my anemia(that, and iron pills.)

I got tested a week after the monthly was gone. It wasn't too overwhelming... I do have low platelets (50,000-60,000 is normal for me). They were 95,000 which is very uncommon but other then the anemia, nothing is out of wack.

Dog gone. I was hoping to treat it myself.... Meaning, I was hoping to wait to go back into the doctors. I have an appt to go in next week but the nurse just said the doctor would talk about iron pills.

I do not think either of my parents have issues with either anemia or high cholestoral.

My sister, mom and I all have problems with anemia. I did especially when I was PG. I was down to a 9 with DS. I never got above 10.7 even with taking an iron supplement.

I take liquid Floradix. It is natural, easily absorbed and non constipating. I get it at our natural food store. :)

As far as treating it they can have you take Iron Pills.. but also to get your levels up faster you can get treated for it.. I had severe anemia earlier this year and they dr said that he didnt know how I was able to function let alone go to work every day with it being so low.. I had to go in for IV Infusion therapy.. They put in an iv and fed me the stuff thru that.. I had to go for 1 hr every day for 2 weeks and then about a month later had to do it again.. They just left the iv in my arm and covered it with bandage so they wouldnt have to restick me every day..It came out a few times so they had to do it a few times..

Hope your feeling better.. I know exactly how you feel.. It was so horrible to be that tired every day... It felt like I was running on about 3 hours sleep a day even when I was sleeping 9 or 10 hours..

Ask you Dr. about Aranesp! It is a shot to treat aneimia1

Have blood work done: platelets, white/red cell count, TSH, T4 (thyroid), iron, folic acid, calcium, cholesterol, etc.

Ask for a copy from your doc and review it (most tests now show you the acceptable range). Then meet with your dr. for a review.

Best of luck to you.
