What brand pencils do you purchase for school? I just purchased my first pack of Ticonderoga pencils yesterday. They sharpened so well and wrote very nice. Downside they are very, very pricey. I see they are a Dixon product. There is also a Dixon pencil. Also, what about the Mirado brand? I have some paper mates left from last year that we have not used. I do not like the sparkly and plastic cover design pencils as they do not sharpen. So back to my original question. What pencil is worth the money and will not get "eaten" by the second day of school?

we buy whatever's on sale, often staples brand. so far so good but I think the teachers prefer Ticonderoga

Ticonderogas. I've found them to last longer. I don't know if it offsets the price, though. They can be found on sale, and I buy the year's supply when they are!

Are they for your personal use? Because Ticonderoga are very nice. . .and feel nice to use. However, if they are going in the community pot at school, I would get whatever is on sale. I just bought a bunch of the 9cent Penways from Walgreens. I used to teach 4th grade. . .and trust me. . .you don't want to know all the ways kids can abuse pencils. . .it's just not worth buying the pricey kind IMHO.

I just bought the 9 cent pencils at Walgreens today!

It's a pencil.... whatever is cheapest.

Yes, the Ticonderogas or another good brand will be for our personal use. But also how are the Penways, I usually donate some to my childs teacher for their personal stash.

If they're for your personal use, then by all means get them if you want. They are great pencils. The Penways are ok. . .they write. . .lol! I'm sure the teacher will be glad to have them.

Whatever Staples has as their 10 pencils for .01 sale, that is what we get! :thumbsup2

As a teacher, I used to buy the cheapest. However, I can't count how many next-to-new pencils I have thrown in the garbage because a) They do not sharpen correctly. Sometimes and entire box will sharpen so the graphite is towards the side. Sharpen over and over, still to the side. b) The pencil sharpens, but the graphite breaks down in the pencil and falls out. and, c) The eraser falls out, breaks off or hardens and is unusable. :confused3 If you know kids, you realize they will not use a pencil without an eraser.
After throwing away too many, I now request parents send Ticonderoga. You can buy cheaper, but you may be throwing your money away.

I find that the really cheap ones have crappy erasers that don't work at all! I don't know which kind we buy, but I know them when I see them

Our district bought the cheapest pencils they could find. I got so tired of pencils that would not sharpen properly or erasers that came off that I went to Walmart and bought a bunch of Ticonderogas. They were so much better.

I never paid attention to brands with pencils. My younger two I buy disney pencils for of course..lol. My oldest son I buy whatever regular yellow pencils are cheapest. He likes smencils though.
