What Book In School Did You Have To Read, But You Hated?

Animal Farm and The Grapes of Wrath.

Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton..........The only thing I remember about it was that some guy was on a sled. I was reduced to "Cliff Notes" by that one.:D

It's funny, I really enjoyed "The Call of the Wild" and "Red Badge of Courage", but I hated the 300 pages of tedium known as "Moby Dick".

some of my favorite books are listed here! :p

i hated the pearl and the old man and the sea. BORING!

Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, and Especially All Quiet On The Western Front. I remember throwing it across the room I was so ticked by the ending.

Oh, so many of them from which to choose...

Beowolf
Canterbury Tales
Ethan Frome
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings
The Great Gatsby
Red Badge of Courage
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (come on, this is literature? If any of us submitted a paper to an English teacher written in stream of consciousness, we'd get an F.)

But we also had to read some wonderful books...

The Catcher in the Rye
A Separate Peace
1984
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
Lord of the Flies
Othello
The Good Earth

Cindy, I feel bad for you having to read the Odyssey, but we had to translate it from Greek into English... much worse... but I can still, 20 years later, recite the first 4 lines of it in Greek.

Animal Farm and The Grapes of Wrath.

I LOVED the Grapes of Wrath! It's probably been nearly 30 years since I have. I think that I am going to have to read it again. AND watch the movie (which I have never seen, except for the scene that you see with Henry Fonda on the Great Movie Ride and on all of the Oscar montages. :) )

Some of my favorites are listed here, too. I just love to read.

But, the one book I positively hated was Joan Didion's "Slouching Towards Bethlehem." Unfortunately I was assigned to read it not once, but for 3 different classes - one in high school and two in college. It was dreadful (x3). Give me Moby Dick and Hamlet any day.

I hated Siddartha and Man's Search for Meaning.
Last semester we read Wuthering Heights, and I loved it!! :teeth:

I had a LOT of reading in high school and college. While we had some dull stuff, the WORST were The Orestia (a greek trilogy/tragedy and I had to read it over the summer. Nobody got it!) and Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad. I could get through Crime and Punishment, but Lord Jim...to this day, my friend and I talk about how horrible that book was!

I hated "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "Lord of the Flies"

I didn't mind the harder more classic stuff.

I hated almost all the French lit I had to do for my Masters.

Oh my, Homer, the Odyssey and the Iliad were a few of my favorites.

I can't remember which ones I didn't like. I know there was some, but I don't remember. English was one of my best subjects though.

just not grammer:rolleyes: :p

Anything by Shakespere! Ugghhh!!!!!!!!!!!

Moby Dick! My 11th grade english teacher decided his course was too easy for me, and if I wanted an A, I had to read Moby Dick. I was the only one this applied to! Since I wanted to keep up my GPA, I did it, but HATED it!
