what benefits do you not get from buying resale vs thru disney

You don't get the purchase perks like developer points or $$ of the cost of a point. And you might not get the free lithograph or backpack or other free with purchase item. Otherwise, you get all the same DVC perks that everyone else gets, like AP discount, dining and shopping discounts at select locations.

Usually it will be less in closing costs and the current UY points (resale it depends on what has been used in the contract, there are a lot of "stripped" contracts).

I bought resale in december last year and I still never got a planner from DVC. I got everything else (member card, disneyfiles, etc) I finally picked one up myself in disneyland.

DVC usually has some great incentives that end up cancelling out the "savings" of buying resale. Plus you get a fresh, nonstriped contract. One more thing, if you have a current contract then DVC can add that and make it the same UY month whereas through resale you get what you get with that contract.

If you buy resale, as a first time DVCer, you don't have to buy the minimum number of points Disney wants you to buy (160). You can buy a smaller contract. And you can usually buy for MUCH less per point than from Disney.

Our wait when buying through The Timeshare Store was a whopping 6 days. We were in the system in under 21 days. But your mileage may vary.

DisFlan

We didn't get a planner for our 1st year either. We purchased in January of '06 and didn't get a planner until October of that year.

We were only interested in DVC points for our 1st year and found the points off the internet, so it wasn't a big deal.

I wonder if you can request the current planner from your reseller and see if the original owners are willing to part with their planner, or if you could beg Disney to give you one.

What do you miss by buying resale? You don't get any previous mailings that were sent to the previous owners, the cool totebag, and of course didn't get to go on any of the cool vacations that the previous owners were able to take, but you only miss the current planner!

If you buy from Disney, you're in the DVC almost instantly (versus 6-9 weeks for resale) and can begin making reservations.

It does seem to take forever to go through resale. We just bought at BWV through TSS. The process began on 1/22.

We closed on 3/18 and we have our ID# but are still waiting for our points to be deposited so we can make a reservation. Still nothing. :sad2:

That sounds odd to me.

Have you called MS and inquired? We were told that our points would be deposited within a week, they were there in 4 days. I called daily to find out.

The ONLY differences are the minor variations that happen around the purchase. There is currently do difference in using those points going forward and it's not likely there will be. However, DVC could change this in the future though it they did it'd likely only be for those going forward and those who are already members would be grandfathered.

If you buy resale, you won't get that diffty DVC tote bag.

Tote bag?? We just bought at the Doorway to Dreams in IL. The only thing we walked out of there with was our gift card and a post it note that our guide wrote the amount she charged our credit card. Does more come after we sign the closing documents?? Will we get a handbook or something as well??

I got a call yesterday from "Larry" from "DVC quality assurance". He wanted to know if I got my membership cards, planner, and some other new member thing. I told him all I got were the cards. He said I should have gotten them but he would send them again. (should take 3-4 weeks) We'll see what happens.

The tote bag comes with your paperwork you need to sign.

WE closed in 11/07 and added on in 12/07. The original contract was a resale and the add on was through Disney. The add on points were usable immediately and I was able to use them way before the resale contract points went through. We did not get a planner initially. I called MS and received one last Saturday. It took about 4 weeks after the call to get one.

Thanks Mike. That's great! I'm glad we are getting some more paperwork. My husband and I were laughing once we got in the car and realized that we just paid a substantial amount of money and all we had to prove it was a post it note! I think we were so excited that we didn't even think about getting a real receipt!

I got the same call from Larry myself about a week ago.

I told him everything was fine, but that we didn't get the planner after 2 calls.

He made a note to resend and said no entries were in the system for my request.

He said I should get the planner in about 4 weeks.

Well, two days later the planner shows up. Either he was REEEEALY overestimating the delivery time or one of the previous requests went through another method and got processed.

Either way, I got the planner and I am glad I did.

BTW: we purchased resale and other than taking a little while, it was a smooth process. Plus we saved $$$ (OKW @ $74/pt)!
