I am beside myself, with cashiers and their thoughts. I went into a mcdonalds,and I used my atm card. Instead of handing me my reciept, she wadded it up and threw it in the trash. I looked at her and asked her for my reciept. She says well no one wants theres anyway. Well I do.

A few days later I went in to get coffee, the man said .99 cents, I handed him a dollar bill and then he closed his drawer and did not give my my penny. Granted it was only a penny, but it was the point he thought he could keep it. I stood there and he gave me the most dirty look and then gave me my penny. Is it me? Are cashiers taking things for granted that they dont need to return your change, or give you a reciept?

I haven't had this happen recently, but I used to get that with the change a lot - once in the McD's drive-thru, they shorted me a nickel so I asked for it and they were very bothered by having to get it, but I wasn't moving until they did.

Another time, at a gas station (in NJ, where they pump your gas), it came to $19.99 and I handed the guy $20 and he didn't give me my change and I said "where's my change?" and he said "It's only a penny" and I said "Yes, but it's MY penny...I want it" and he looked at my DH and said "Is she serious?" and DH said "Yeah, you'd better get it man" so he did.

Haven't had an issue with the receipt, but I would be very annoyed if I was using my debit card and they didn't give me a receipt - how would I ever remember to write it in my checkbook?

I wish I had those cashiers in my town! I am so tired of getting a receipt for a debit card purchase - I never use them to reconcile any purchase. I just go online and keep track that way. It suits me much better not to get a receipt and if I do get one I wad it up and throw it away or ask the clerk to recycle it.

I would make a point of waiting for change that was a nickel or more, but a penny just isn't worth the embarassment I would feel at standing there tapping my fingers waiting for it. Sorry, that's just too cheap for me.

Although I must say, today at Sonic I waited for a penny change because I had $2.13 in change and a drink is $2.14. I told the cashier I needed the penny for my next drink - and then I tipped her a dollar to make up for it. That's the only time I can think I would be put out by a penny.

At our Starbucks they always always ask "Do you want your receipt?" I can say no, and let them toss it - or yes, and use it to prove they didn't give me the right drink.

It should be the customer' choice.

C'mon - for a PENNY?

It is too cheap. The reason they don't ask is because 99 out of a hundred people now just wave it off. That leaves one out of a hundred customers standing there all huffy. It's silly to stand your ground for a penny.

Agreed. I hate pennies AND receipts, so I would love to have these cashiers.

I agree, it's not being cheap. Imagine how much extra money they would make if they did that to everyone?

Also, in regards to the receipt thing - I prefer to be asked if I'd like my receipt. There are too many scams out there and I would prefer to have proof of my transaction.

The cashier should not assume you don't want your penny. The receipt...I would think most wouldn't want it at a fast food type place, so I don't think it's such a breech of customer service to throw it away. They certainly should apologize and offer you another if they do and you wanted it, though.

Well, if they did it twice a week to me they'd get a dollar. I'd much rather sacrifice the buck than take the time to wait for one whole penny and be THAT customer. If the dollar is that important to you, by all means demand it back.

And I'm sure any business would be glad to show you the amount of money they took in by keeping small change and compare it to the amount of money they lost when a customer shoplifted that bag of coffee or candy bar.

I hate the penny thing too. I don't want/keep my receipts but I REALLY don't care getting one, I just throw it away. It's my penny though, and I want to use it however I chose. I have noticed this a lot lately and I just rudely (the rudely is on purpose because I think it's more rude to take my money like that) say "can I have my penny now?"

I don't care about the penny, it's about the person deciding for me what I can do with that penny. It's frustrating.

I was jipped out of a penny at Office Depot, a couple weeks ago. And I was annoyed by it.

If you make 5 cash transactions a day, and ignore the penny, over the course of a year that is $18.25. I could think of tons of useful ways I could spend almost $20.

I also pick up change I see, even if it's only a penny. And if I notice I was charged wrong, I will say something. All those little things, do add up to real money. Not a lot, but a bit of extra souvenir money, a trip to the movies, song downloads or apps for the iProducts.

I can't recall a time a cashier just threw my receipt away. Many times they do ask if I want it. The penny thing I usually say just keep it/ As many times as that happens I have also been told, I'll pay the penny for you, so its a wash.

Maybe you should look into a different McDonald's location to frequent.

That Mcdonalds was a one time, I was next to the car mechanic waiting, I did not have my coffee.

Well, I live in SoCal and just spent 2 weeks touring all over New England visiting my family. The only state we did not hit was Vermont. We stopped into allot of restaurants from Dunkins Donuts, McDonalds as well as lovely sit down restaurants and I can honestly tell you there was not one unfriendly or odd situation at all. I love McD's new berry shake and love their yogurt parfait ... so we hit that first thing in the morning. DH loves DD's coffee, which we cannot get here. I really did not give it any thought until I read your post and thought, wow, we had great service all the time we were away!!!

I am surprised, OP, that you had several unfriendly incidents.

I don't think it is cheap to recieve all of your change.
I always keep my reciepts, I can recycle it myself.
It should not be a privalige to get your reciept or your correct change.

I've been saving change, including all pennies, for a couple years, now, and what you learn from that is that it adds up! So I get all pennies that are due to me, no matter how silly I might feel.

And a way I learned how much to budget, once I started actually budgeting, was by having kept my receipts. I have a big yearly accordion folder thing and I put receipts by month into it. So receipts are important to me as well.
