What are your thoughts on a reclining sofa and loveseat?

Yeah, that whole basement thing in FLorida just doesn't work, does it? :)

LOL. Yeah, my 1st home in MI had formal living room, family room & finished basement. 3 times as much space to clean and fill with clutter. No thanks!

We have 1 living room, no basement, no family room, just 1 living room. lol

We have a reclining couch and I love it, it's comfy and it looks good!! Most of our guests don't even realize it reclines until we hit the button to lay back. :) We also have a reclining chair, our living room is too small for a couch and loveseat. :)

I love love love my reclining sofa!!! We have a sectional, with 3 recliners. It's heavenly!

Actually no, I didn't realize that. Most people I know have a lr, fr and a finished basement. :confused3

Yep. People in my neighbourhood have a living room, family room and basement as the norm. Even my parents who have a 50 year old home have both a living room and a finished basement.

Not saing it's like there everywhere but it's certainly not *most* people who have only a LR. I would say it's probably evenly split.

Does this mean we need a poll? :rotfl2:

LOL. Maybe. I just don't like sweeping generalizations. Everybody has different styles of homes, sizes of homes etc. It would be like someone who lives in a bungalow saying most people have bungalows. No. Maybe where you live they do, but not everywhere.

I think it is a very regional thing. Here for example homes either have a great room or a separate living room and family room.

Homes with basements or attics converted to living space are very very rare. I know a few really old homes (1920s or older) have tiny basements (needed them to stay cool in the summer months) and most "new" homes (1940s-current) don't have basements. There are the odd development here and there that did them but they are by far the exception not the rule.

We are in need of new living room furniture. I went browsing yesterday, and told the sales woman I was looking for comfort and casual and she showed me a reclining sofa and love seat, in a new fabric called champion which she said is the new microfiber but it more durable and textured.

I fell in love with this sofa...it is extremely comfortable and a good price point. But, I am not thrilled with the style completely. It seems most of the recliners have the same puffy/poofy cushions(which I guess is why it was incredibly comfy).

I sat on many sofas and came back to the first one. I'm hesitant though, maybe I should keep looking but I think I might be sold on a reclining set.

Thoughts?

i bought my sister in law a recliner for her new house and she absolutely loves it, and after a few trips around hers for lunch i fell in love with it myself so i went and bought one for my pool room, if you're looking still you could try these guy's for a recliner just4sofas.com, benefits are that they are easy to clean and easy to maintain if you keep on top of it, downside i guess if you rip it or the mechanism breaks it can cost a bit to rectify!

happy sitting :):thumbsup2

Agree with kangareaux - definitely lie down on it first if you want to use it as a "nap" sofa.

We bought a Laz-e-boy reclining sofa that was not the usual "poofy" kind (they no longer offer it or I'd post a picture) and while comfortable to sit on, it's definitely not for napping.

Oh, and it's in our great room - not many formal living rooms in FL and NO basements. And I like it that way. ;)

Agree with this. Our Laz-e-boy set was completely unsuitable for sleeping. Also, recliners (or "motion furniture" as Laz-e-boy calls their stuff) take up a huge amount of space. We had to give ours away when we dowsized to a condo; our new living room was so small the foot-rests banged into one another when you tried to recline both the couch and love seat at the same time...

I just bought a new sofa, and looked at a lot of recliners. I decided I didn't like them for a variety of reasons. I didn't see any that weren't ugly. It's one more thing to break. We have cats and I had visions of the cat getting squished in the recliner.

And I think the ones that require electricity are an obscene waste of energy.

I have to agree somewhat with OPs. We have 1 living room, not formal, and a finished basement but it's a bedroom down there, not a family room. And we live in a townhouse.
With that being said, we inherited a La-z-boy recliner and couch with reclining ends. I love love love the recliner, and love reclining on the couch, but can not sleep on it. Our next living room set will definitely include a couch that we can sleep on. We had a sectional and boy that was comfy to sleep on, but it kept sliding apart...and that's a whole 'nother issue!

Most people I know here have LR, FR & basement also.

When I lived in Wisconsin, many houses were built with just one main living area -- think great room, but I never was in one without a basement.(although we had a LR & FR growing up).

We bought a matching set several years ago for our family room, probably at least 10 or more. I think the company that made them is Lane. The couch has recliners on each end and the center flips to make a table with cup holders. Both sections of the loveseat recline (and rock too), and the chair reclines as well.

LOVE THEM!! Yes, the backs are poofy but they have hidden zippers so you can "fluff" the filling, or even add to them if needed. I have occasionally "fluffed" the filling, but have never had to add more.

The material has held up super well, they don't show any wear at all.

I got the reclining sectional of my dreams last December. It has 4 recliners! Finally, there is no fighting about where to sit! I have a big family...

We have a reclining sofa from LaZboy. The seats that recline are very comfy, however the mechanisms inside the sofa that allow it to recline are very uncomfortable if you're trying to lay lengthwise on the couch. You can feel the bars in your sides like you do a fold out sofa. If you don't plan to do much laying down on your sofa, then go for it. At least go back to the showroom and try laying on it to see if it's an issue for you.

I love my recliner sofa! And it is right smack dab in the middle of my livingroom. We have no basement living area and only the livingroom in which to watch tv so that is where it has to go. Our LR is not that big and I needed places for my two boys (15 & 11) to sit without their feet touching each other. :) DH has his recliner and I have a big comfy chair with a matching ottoman. I also made sure that the recliner sofa we purchased had arms on the outside of the them and not those little circular mechanisms. We were told that the wire from them breaks often and needs to be replaced.

OP- make sure you get a quality set. We bought ours which had a dual recliner piece (loveseat with a cady for drinks and accessories like remotes) and then the sofa which had dual recliners. It looked good when we bought it but we got it from Rooms to Go and never again. Its made of fiberboard so not so sturdy and we often have large groups of teen girls hanging out and its not the best piece of furniture. Worst- the pullee's have snapped several times and it was after the 1 yr warranty. Rooms to go won't even allow you to hire their repair people to fix it( dh is handy and found the replacement pullees online and made the fix very inexpensively) but I've learned my lesson.

Good luck shopping!
