What are your responsibilities when renting a vacation home?

I read a thread that was talking about washing towels/sheets, etc. before checking out of your home. I know that there is maid service at the end of your stay, but what else should I be prepared to do? I know we will need to buy our own cleaners, etc. Just trying to get prepared, as we leave in less than three weeks.

The management company will detail exactly what they want you to do. We had to:
Put the breakfast dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on.
Strip the beds and start the washer.
Wash pool towels if used.
Put bath towels in the laundry room.
Take out garbage. If there was lots of garbage, we were to put it in the community dumpsters, not in the garbage bins outside the front door.
If there was unopened food left, the cleaners would take it.

It really didn't take too long to complete their list. I was able to get most of the linens into the dryer by the time we left.

It will vary from company to company and owner to owner but in general if you can start a load of washing ,strip beds and get garbage bagged and ready you will be thanked by the cleaners.

You don't have to clean with cleaners, just tidy up and dispose of food and garbage, put dishes in dishwasher and start it (sometimes it tells you to put them away also), strip beds and take towels to laundry room. I usually put one load in the washer first thing in the morning and before we leave can put that in the dryer and start another load.
There will be a binder on the counter or coffee table with that info in it as well as other info about the house and area. I've never found it a big deal any of the times we've stayed. It takes very little time.

As already said it can vary from owner to owner but the main thing is to take out the garbage and put the dishes in the dishwasher. Owners pay for the cleaners to come in after each guest so just a general tidy up is required other than that.

All homes are individually owned and managed by different man/co's. It may be a bit different for each home. Larger homes where you need more time for the cleaners to do their job may have a bit more items to do.

Most will have you put all furniture and electronics back if you move them. Put all dirty dishes in the dishwasher and start it. Strip beds and start laundry. Put all towels in an area designated. Many will ask that the pool towels or terry robes if you chose to use them need to be cleaned by you. All trash be bagged and put into either cans provided or a dumpster. May seem like a lot but really only takes a few minutes.

Also lock up all doors when you leave.
