What are your Mr. Potato Head tips?

According to two different CMs at Once Upon a Toy at Downtown Disney, you can buy a head only for $2. The box is 19.95, but they have this huge potato head figure you can fill for 46.95 now. We thought about doing the huge one, but it would be hard to pack. :(

Also, this time they only had one arm and said you had to turn it upside down for the other side. So basically you'd have one thumbs up and one thumbs down. :confused3

This info is from last week. :)

For what it's worth the My Little Pony stuff a box is still in the back of the store. You can fit 4 ponies in that box, if you try hard enough. :)

Last week we found the same thing, The CM told us that normally people just grab 2 arms and not realize. He found me 1 set only, but i was ok with it. I bought alot of hats, but did not think to get full sets :goodvibes
I have Mickey feet and Minnie bow, Mickey Ears, Donald Hat, Safari Hat, Cindy hair only, Tinks hair and Wing. But other then that i should have sorted sets out first. Too bad:headache:

i accidentally bought two left mr incredible arms!.... my two year old doesn't care though :)
we bought the big potato instead of the small box and stuffed it to the rim. it sure was heavy to bring home!

How much were you able to cram into the big potato? I thought about getting one of those, but didn't know if alot of the bigger pieces would fit.

oh, you can fit lots! they told us to throw in some big pieces and then fill around that with some smaller ones, like in layers...one layer at a time and you will tons in there. the last things i put in at the top where the small and skinny things like wands, arms, and ears etc.

the big potato's eyes, ears, mouth and nose plus hat comes off just like the regular potato so it can be played with too. but i think it makes a great piggy bank:thumbsup2

*****sigh***** sadly I think our Mr. P days are nearly over. Unless I (Mommy) sees something I can't live without. We have at least a dozen heads now and usually bring home no less then one full box of parts (and yes, I've been known to sit in a corner stuffing and restuffing until there is just no air left in that precious little box. And yes, the CM's will tape it shut for you!
Anyone been recently and know of any new parts/characters/peices??

My 18 gallon rubbermaid tote here at home may hold a few more things:upsidedow

OK I am SO adding all this to my "things to do at WDW" list!! Thanks for the thread!

I just wanna say that you should check if the pieces fit before you stuff them in.I bought one of the pieces and it didn't fit.Now all it does is flop around in the hole. I think it was on of the arms that hold the extra stuff. Also you can do what my mom and I did, we bought the potato when we got back home. Then you have more room to stuff the box.:thumbsup2

I disagree about not buying arms. The arms they have at Disney are different from the regular ones in that they can hold things. Last time I only bought 3 sets of arms. One of my goals for this time is to get at least 5 sets of arms...spread out that could be enough for 10 potato heads to each hold one item.

Just to share...the Potato Heads are more for me than my kids, lol! I use them to decorate my mantle. I may have to come back and post a photo if I can find the cd with the latest picture on it. People crack up when they walk into my livingroom and see the Potato Heads all across the mantle...and I love that!

The only tip I have is to buy the actual head before you leave (Wal-Mart or Target they run about $6) that way you only fill the box with pieces, and the kids can play with it on the way there.

Just an FYI - we did this and a couple of my hats would not work on the non-Disney MPH (everything else was just fine)!

I ended up buying a MPH while in MK so my POTC hat would work with the whole POTC boots/eyes/parrot/ear (we had bought 2 MPH at Walmart while near Disney and then DS bought a box and filled it with parts for his at DTD while I bought a plastic MPH and filled it with lots of parts). Once I bought the actual Disney MPH body, the POTC hat worked just fine as did one other that did not work on the Walmart one!

I saw a post that you can buy a body for $2.00. I had no idea! Has anyone actually done this?

If you do by the MPH (whole set-up), make sure to stuff his body completely full. This is allowed and you can get a lot if you pack creatively! :goodvibes

I keep seeing post about certain arms and bodies not working. That is sometimes true HOWEVER it has nothing to do with where you purchase them. Some Mr. Potato Heads are simply manufactured differently. I mean what do you want for a $6 dollar toy from WalMart? I have never purchased a head from Disney or at least not that I recall, maybe one years ago? I own ten+ heads and some work beautifully others are a bit lose. Some WalMart/Disney arms are loose some are not. Hats all fit fine.

I am the poster who posted earlier about having a MPH party and having a station set up. Those kids played for hours and rarely came across a part they couldn't make work on something. The worst fit we have ever had is a Darth Vader Tator. ugh to those arms. We easily have over 250 parts.

Some of the Disney ones we have are several Mickey/Minnies, Goofy, Tink, Princess, Buzz, Mr. Incredible, Pirates, and I can't remember! I'm to lazy to get up!

So. . .save your money and just buy Disney specific parts on site at DTD. Oh and you can order individual parts on line later, spendy but you can!

I'm not sure if this was posted and if so, I feel it is important enough to post twice anyway. Make sure you get the arms from Disney. They are made different than the regular arms because they hold all the Disney pieces you are buying. Make sure you get at least one left and one right arm. I bought several of each in case one got lost.

someone had a great post about an inventory sheet; this would help a lot! especially as I've done this MPH part buying thing twice, once at DLR and once at WDW and each time I panicked slightly and just started stuffing pieces in. I cannot seem to keep a cool enough head to walk calmly around and assess what I have and don't have. :rotfl2:

question - if we do the very large plastic container, do we have to get a body? Can we just get parts?

Reason - we just bought Sat before Easter the 4-body MPH plastic bucket basket at Target. So we have bodies of two adults and two tater 'tots' so to speak.
