I was just thinking the other day about how much time I 'waste' in the free time I have doing the things I enjoy. Not that I spend an inordinate amount of time on these things, I just wish it were time well spent...that I'd have something to show for it when I'm done (other than relaxation)! I have friends who enjoy gardening, scrapbooking, excersizing, home improvement projects...things that actually have a tangible benefit. I, on the other hand love to read (fiction...nothing that I'd actually LEARN anything from), surf the internet, shop (that's not only non-productive - it's anti-productive), watch movies, and play the piano. The last certainly is beneficial but it's the thing I have the least amount of time for since it keeps my 2-year-old awake at night.

So...anyone have any productive hobbies (or non-productive hobbyists are welcome to post, too!). Maybe I can get some ideas.

Both my DH and I are actively involved in community theatre. It takes a LOT of time, though and you have to be dedicated and absolutely love it!

We act, sing, and do anything that needs to be done to bring a production to an audience. We actually met acting in a dinner theatre, so I guess you could say it's been VERY productive for us!

Tonight we open in "California Suite" for a 3-week run. We were unable to do much of it when our DD(17) was smaller, but now that she's into her own stuff, we are back into it full force.

I think everything you mentioned that you do is productive. You are learning every time you read (whether it's fiction or non-fiction) -- you are broadening your viewpoints, opening your mind, tapping on your creativity, and you're a good example to your children when you read.

I don't think ANYTHING is a waste of time if you're enjoying the time doing it!

singing and gardening....:D

Crocheting and gardening.

With crocheting I can sit in front of the fireplace in the evenings, watch TV, and when a project is done, I have a beautiful afghan for either myself, a family member or a friend.

Cross-stitch, reading and singling. I just love the rhythm of stitching and the peace that it brings me. Reading just takes me away to another place and I sing in our Worship Team at church. Just love praise music!

newmousecateer, my mother crochets as well and I have probably a dozen afghans that she made when I was pregnant with my 1st DD! She taught my oldest (who is 11 now) to crochet Her first project was a small afghan that she started when I became pregnant with my youngest DD. She sleeps with it every night and I can't help but think how special it will be to her when she gets older knowing that her big sister lovingly worked on it while she anticipated her arrival!

Since you love to read have you thought about Reading for the Blind or something along those lines? I have an uncle who does this for people who are classified as reading impaired (this includes those with vision problems as well as those with fine motor control etc. who cannot hold a book or newspaper). He does this through a program at his local public television station.

Well, I'm more non-productive than productive. I love to read and surf.
However I'm really into photography and I love to take pictures and frame the special ones for gifts for my familly and friends.
I also love to hike but there isn't many pretty places to hike around here that I haven't already done before many times.
Now that DS is here a litle surfing when he naps is all that I have time for!

Mostly music.

I play trumpet with the local concert band, bass guitar with a swing band, guitar or bass with smaller groupsand any one or combination with local theater groups.

Keeps me off the streets and out of trouble... well off the streets, anyhow.

ok, you asked for it.............. :)

jigsaw puzzles, crafts, pen palling, reading, Dis! ;)

biking, gardening, reading, quiltmaking, scrapbooking, baking and running. These are my hobbies. The things I enjoy doing the most!

Beside surfing the Dis, I love scrapbooking, taking pic's, cross stitching. My husband and I are also vey active in our 3 sons Boy Scout Troop.

Hmmm.....reading, cross stitching, scrapping, baking, collecting recipes, shopping ;) .......it's been a busy summer and I now hope to get back to one or more of these soon :)

I love photogrpahy, scrapbooking, rubber stamping, other paper crafts, and reading.

Disney takes up quite a bit of my spare time. I am also a huge fan of The Beatles and collect their music from all over the world.
That also takes a lot of my time and $:D

Lordy, i do not think what you ARE doing is unproductive...you are just "missing out" on other activities. I would simply just try something new and see if it is something that i would want to continue doing.

I like to do the general things: exercise (lots of walking) and also my new favorite hobby is throwing around a football. Also enjoy plently of reading, dancing, movies, writing, going to the coffee shop with my friends, and photography.
