What are your go-to activities for high crowd days?

We are arriving this Sunday, and Sunday/Monday are going to be SUPER busy due to President's Day. Knowing that we will have it easy on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday, I'm thinking we may want to do the "B List" activities on Sunday and Monday.

We will be hitting the parade and fireworks both days, as they are not running on TWTr.

What else do you like to do on the crazy-busy days, besides collect Fastpasses and eat?

TIA!

I go home. Honestly I can't handle the huge crushing crowds. If I was on vacation, I might go see a movie midday at the AMC, leave and take a nap/swim back at my hotel,, or plan to watch the shows at that time.

For days like this during a stay at Disneyland, we will hit the parks EARLY! Once the lines reach 30minutes we go for pool time.
It's also a good time to stroll through DTD or hit a movie.

One thing I try to do before a trip is have aps info on my phone along with phone numbers

The AMC theater is really nice and comfortable. I have trouble staying awake the seats are so cushy..

I don't count anything out just because it's crowded. Sometimes I'd rather wait in a short line at a cart, grab a snack and wait in certain lines (not PP or most of FL because they're kind of tight lanes) than standing in a CS line and battle for a table. The plus side of just doing your priority list in the beginning, if the crowds don't drop as much as you think they will Tue-Thurs you've already knocked some things of the list. If they do drop, do your favorites again.

Animation Academy (and the rest of the animation building), wander around inside Launch Bay, get some ADR's at nicer/slower places where you won't feel guilty about all the time being spent on a long meal (you can make this even more to your advantage if you do one of the packages for good viewing of WoC, MSEP or Frozen). FPs are a good idea but knowing you have other days I wouldn't run around like a crazy person.

We were there after New Years on a day I later learned the park was actually at capacity/closed for new admissions for a while. We didn't ride a ton of rides but still had a great day. We just accepted that we were going to spend a fair bit of time in line. Heads Up! helps time in line fly by and we often ended up with kids next to us playing with us too. If you don't already have it, there's a Disney Parks deck that's free if you download it while you're inside one of the parks. Make sure you turn off access to your camera while playing in line to save your phone's battery (unless you really like watching the videos...we never watch them).

These are the rides that I do even when it is super crowded because theY are quick loaders/high capacity so the line always seems to be moving...

One thing we did in January over the marathon/holiday weekend was spent some time talking with the train engineer and exploring the other side of the New Orleans Train Station. It was interesting being up in the engine and talking with the engineer. A unique experience for us that we never would have done was it not so busy. We also saw the Beauty and the Beast show at the Fantasy Theatre or whatever it is called. Another fun thing to do even just as adults .

Our DS12 loves the California playground at DCA. Cannot remember the name of it, Redwood challenge trail? It's across from Grizzly River Run. Super fun! It's way bigger than it looks on the outside, like a woodsy Tardis if you will, with lots of fun stuff to see and do. You may want to get fastpasses for something close-ish like GRR or Soarin, then go to the trail and maybe hit some of the low(er) wait rides while you wait like Under The Sea, Golden Zephyr/Jumpin Jellyfish, Tow Mater.

But, if you don't have a park hopper and are only going to be at DLR, I would see the Star Wars Launch Bay in Tomorrowland, maybe try to see Mickey and the Magical Map, do the Castle walk through, the shooting gallery in Frontierland is fun, maybe try to catch the show at Golden Horseshoe while enjoying some chili fries and a sundae (of course!), check out the Mark Twain they have a New Orleans style jazz band playing there sometimes. There always seems to be something fun going on in Town Square - dapper dans, firehouse five (the last time we saw them Goofy was there giving dancing lessons!), and the greatest most awesome attraction of all time - Abraham Lincoln!!

I will confirm some of the strategies already mentioned and add some more specifics from my family playbook. So I think of planning for a heavy crowd day as a two-prong strategy. First, there is strategy for the overarching shape of the day, and second there are specific tactics to use while you are in the parks.

So shape of the day strategy is to arrive early (as many have mentioned) to enter at opening. The first few hours of the day will be the best and you should collect FPs and ride the notorious long line rides while you they have shorter morning lines. Spend no time on shopping or eating during these golden morning hours. Another shape of the day strategy is that I will make a sit down lunch reservation for 11:30am as we will be hungry early and want to have a reserved table to sit and rest and eat just as the wave of heavy crowds year start to flood in. After lunch we hit another ride and then back to hotel for loooooong break. We do not return to park until 5pmish. In the evening we hit rides that are people eaters or those that tend to have shorter lines or shop while others are watching parades/fireworks.

Ok on the specific rides, here are my tactics. I try to be holding a FP while we eat lunch so that we can get right on that ride after lunch. If we are in Dland, I try to have a Splash FP with a window that opens just as we end lunch (I use the park app to clock FP times) so we can eat, ride Splash, and then back to the hotel to change out of wet clothes and nap. If we are in DCA, I do same thing for GRR. In terms of attractions to duck into if you have no FP, are in the midst of crowd mayhem, and you need an escape right away -- here are my lists. For Dland: Tiki Room, Tarzan Treehouse, Pirates if line is moving, Tom Sawyer Island (if open), Mr. Lincoln, Main Street Cinema, watch a show in Golden Horseshoe or at Mickey Magical Map. For DCA: Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, Its Tough to Be a Bug, Animation Academy, King Triton Carousel, Ariel Undersea Adventure, Boardwalk games.

Very good advice in this thread. One thing we have found that works for us (I can't say if it works all the time) is to check wait times for attractions during the parades/Fantasmic/Fireworks. We have found that sometimes a parade/show will pull some of the crowd away from the queues. This doesn't mean there won't still be a decent wait, but some rides can be a good bit shorter during the shows. I have found this is especially the case with Fantasmic and POTC.

DL
Mansion (FPs are usually not that far out)
Pirates (can be a long wait, but long ride in return for it)
Tiki Room
Opera House/Mr Lincoln

DCA
Mermaid
Tough to Be a Bug
Monsters (if you have 2, or can break up into groups of 2, ask for backrow pass to go in the entrance and skip the line)

Just like others have said, my go-to for crowded days/times is the hotel. Yes, go early before tourists wake up. For the evenings, when locals will fill up the Park, manage your expectations. Attractions are probably not the things to do during that time, or at least waiting in the queue will be as much of the experience as the ride itself.

Honestly, though, crowds are more welcome than shortened hours and rides down for maintenance.

I always get FPs for Buzz as soon as I complete a ride on it. As you probably know, the BL FPs machine is disconnected from the rest of the FP system, so if you get a FP and later don't use it, you've lost nothing, essentially.

Also, the Monorail is a nice break in the day. When the park is busy, lines for even that will be long. But it's also a long ride, so often worth it. And it's comparatively quiet.

Enjoy!

Any of the shows.
Monorail
Fastpass rides
Animation academy is a great place to go, we always end up there in the afternoon busy times.
Just sitting down somewhere and people watch.
If you get aladdins oasis, sitting there is a nice respite usually, since it's so quiet.
Pooh bear ride.
Ariel mermaid ride
The pacific wharf as a whole and bakery tour
Just exploring cars land
Bugs land and the rides and movie if you have little ones
Toon town, exploring the various silly things

Besides fast passes and eating? I don't understand. I will happily spend a day eating at DL. LOL! Eat, then to a sit down attraction (Tiki Room). Eat, then a sit down attraction (movie trailer at Magic Eye Theatre). Eat, then a sit down attraction (Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln). Eat, thent a sit down attraction (Golden Horseshoe Saloon). Eat, and then a sit down attraction (Its Tough to be a Bug Theatre). And on and on it goes. I'm not ashamed (okay, maybe a smidgen) to admit I've gone a whole day doing this. I believe I may be the only person who gains weight at Disneyland, LOL.

This hasn't been mentioned that I saw, but DCA has much wider corridors than DL, so when it's very crowded and I start to feel claustrophobic at DL, we hop over to DCA. Even if there are still a lot of people there, it just feels less crowded.

We can really only go when it is busy during school breaks now (we have been in the middle of Jan & Feb before so we know the difference).

To be honest we just go into it knowing and expecting it to be busy and we have never been disappointed. I think a lot of it has to do with attitude. We'd much rather be at Disneyland even when it is crowded than not all.

Our favorite thing when we needed to escape the lines and crowds used to be watching Billy Hill & the Hillbillies at the Golden Horseshoe. We miss that show a lot. The train when it reopens is another way to kick back and relax and take it all in (Monorail to an extent to except you have to get off at Tomorrowland). Other sit down shows are great and we also plan and make our dining arrangements during the busiest time of day. Sometimes we just look for a shaded bench and just people watch for a little while.

A vote here for Mickey and the Magical Map. There is entirely too much of that eye-rolling "believe in the magic of wishes and dreams" word salad that characterizes so many Disney theme park shows. But they have great sets and the dancing is pretty good and of course it is mostly Disney songs that everyone already loves. It's pretty darn good for a theme park show.

It is usually easy to get a seat even on crowded days, and there is a snack bar inside the theater entrance where you can get something to enjoy while you sit in the shade and watch the show.

LOL. I gained 4 pounds and walked 15 miles in 5 days! (Which is a lot of walking for me).

Lots of great suggestions here. We had a fantastic trip. Link to trip report in my signature.
