Okay, I'm getting organized and wondering what are the basic supplies to get started?

Cutter -
type is negotiable! I got the Fiskars Rotary cutter and the 12" cutter at Michaels with 40% off coupon

Adhesive -
type also negotiable! Try a few see what YOU like! Just make sure it is acid/lignin free!

Album-
also negotiable! Pick a size 8 1/2 X 11 or 12X12 (there are others if it is a theme album too! Then you need to pick style - post bound hindged strap three ring -
AUGH there are SO many choices - I started using 3 ring 8 1/2 X 11 and now I am converting them ALL to 12X12 stap AUGH I like all my bindinges to match! ;)

PAPER, Cardstock and MORE PAPER!
you can make ANYTHING with paper and you can NEVER have enough! (although my husband will debate this!)

Pens/markers
for journalling

OK these are the VERY BASICS that you need - from there go bnuts - stickers, stamps, embellishments, die cuts, punches, zyrons, chalks, colluzzles, the possibilities are endless -
and don't forget your PRICELESS and FREE online resources!
I LOVE www.twopeasinabucket.com to peak at what everyone else is doing ;), get titles, poems, and other ideas!

Pens/markers are also negotiable in my book. All the ones I bought at the beginning dried up because it turns out I use the computer for title & journaling.

Also, computer can be used for free clipart & free fonts -- thus saving more on stickers, diecuts, letter stickers.

At the beginning I bought alot of those letter stickers & other stickers -- come to find out I haven't touched most of it.

Only buy something when you are READY for it. Not, oh this is cute, then hope to take photos to use it.

Some of my earlier layouts (Disney) show how most of my pages are simply PAPER & PHOTOS and what can be done with them.

Learn your style before you sink a TON of money into supplies you won't use.
Good luck.

Most basic:
*Album with pages & page protectors
*Cutter
*Acid Free Paper
*Acid Free Adhesive (I love the tape runners- quick and simple)
*Scrapbook friendly pens. I'm big on journaling in my own writing - IMHO it adds your personality and warmth to the page...I know the warm fuzzies I get when I see my gramma's handwriting and how unique it was to her...you just can't get that from a computer, no matter how cool the font.

Something to keep it all in; when you're first starting out, a simple Rubbermaid tub will do, with perhaps some file folders for your papers.

I have a TON of supplies, and 90% of my layouts are just cardstock and photos....

I think you need to have at least a black pen, but I have to agree with SplasMtn that I don't use mine very much.

I use my paper trimmer and hermafix repositionable dots on every layout, a decent pair of small scissors is useful too, other than that, you don't need a lot. (she says trying to cram EVERYTHING into a new storage cabinet in the living room, where did all this STUFF come from.)

I must say I do use my letter stickers a lot, but I have an awful lot of other stickers that I have just collected over the years. Same with cute patterned paper, I've now learned that the only patterned paper I really use, is the stuff that 'Read as solid', ie, if you squint at it, then it's mainly one color. I arely if ever use 'Cute' patterned paper with little baby bottles or Mickey heads all over it. The one exception being the fab Sandylion Disney papers that have the character in one corner, I really like those.

I agree with most of the above.

You need an album - there are a LOT of debates about albums. I am a CM Consultant and love their albums. Even if I weren't a consultant I would only use their albums. That being said it depends on how you scrap. I have a young terror of a kid that sprayed ALL of my albums down with a water bottle. I was so VERY thankful that I had the straphinge with the page protectors on it, so that the water only got on the page protectors and not down the pages as can happen with top load. A lot of people don't have that situation though (with the spraying crazy kid).

Paper Trimmer - - I would start with a small one that is more for photos and matting and stuff. If you know you want to get into it then get a bigger 12 inch. I have a Carl 12 inch that I love because it is HEAVY duty, not plastic.

Corner Rounder - - This is an inexpensive tool and new scrappers LOVE it usually.

Paper - Initially I would stick with a couple of packs of solid and venture easily into the patterned. You can really go nutso with patterned paper to start with and buy a ton. It adds up fast and then you never use it.

Scissors - I have both CM scissors and Cutterbee. I love the cutterbee ones, but use them for more detailed paper piecing.

Tape / Adhesive - a tape runner in my opinion is REQUIRED. I actually prefer the CM tape runner, and I am getting used to their new one. I have tried a couple of others, and not been as happy, but this is really really personal choice, just like the albums.

Pens - A black one is necessary in my mind. I have a LOT of pens. I love to doodle, and accent. It can be used as accents with or instead of stickers and it makes things stand out really well. Also, the journaling (despite my current lack of in my year album SIGH) is what makes these books so special later on.

I agree with everyone else, go easy on the stickers initially. I have a huge sticker portfolio of stickers I though Oh... I will use those, and NEVER have. I tend to shy away from them now, unless I absolutely have a layout that NEEDS them that minute.

the most important supply is you!!!!! I use postit notes on the back of photos to remind me why I took the picture. There is usually a reason. not just because my kids a re the cutest sweetest in the world there is usually more to it. but sometimes it is because they are the cutest sweetest most wonderful children in the world.

WOW! THANKS for all of the great replies! I'm excited and ready to start scrapping!:)
