Hi there! We are getting ready to purchase a resale DVC membership and I want to make sure I fully understand as much as possible.

What is "estoppel"?

What does it mean when points are in "holding"?

Estoppel is a report that Disney provides that reports the status and balance of the existing contract.

Holding is when a reservation was canceled less than 30 days from check in. Those points go into holding and can only be used 60 days prior to check in.

Is holding like a penalty for canceling less than 30 days from check in? They can only be used 60 days prior to check in with the new reservation dates? What if I can't go for another 6 months? Does this prevent the points from being able to be banked? Sorry for all the questions! I guess I just don't understand the purpose of this.

Holding points cannot be banked. They can only be used to make a reservation within 60 days or less from the date you make the reservation. As long as you have not reached the end of your UY, you don't lose those points. So if the original reservation was early in your UY, that will give you more time to reschedule your visit. If you don't use the holding points before your UY is over, then you will lose them. I suppose that you could regard it as a penalty for canceling with less than 30 days to go before your original arrival date.
