What are the smoking rules for on board?

Remember...smokers pay as much as you do. They don't get a discount for smoking. My grandma is a smoker, but she understands that a lot of people hate smoke. So when she cruises with us in Oct., she will probably try her best to stay away from people. I hate smoking as much as the next guy, trust me.

I realize they do pay just as much as everyone else....They pay to have a good time on an awesome ship....they're not paying big bucks to just go out and smoke...just like we (non-smokers) are paying the same for the same thing...to have a good time on an awesome ship PERIOD. BUT it seems to me that smokers get the perfered treatment...by saying they CAN smoke in all open air areas (with the exception of the mickey pool)...and all clubs after 9...oh and let's not forget diversions now....leaving all those non-smokers to have to find areas of the ship where they can go without being bothered by all the smoke.

And like I said earler....by having an area just for smokers to go do their thing...then come back and enjoy the ship...seems like it would solve alot of issues and allow EVERYONE to enjoy the ship and all it has to offer...smokers and non-smokers.

I do think MOST smokers are thoughtful of others and don't try to blow smoke in your face...so I can't help but think most smokers wouldn't mind steping outside for a few min to do what they need to then back in resume what ever they were doing. Same concept as many citys have done...by having smoking bans in ALL public buildings and areas.

But again...That's JMO

It's my opinion as well, Jill.

Recently, DU released a newsletter that stated that smoking hours in the Diversions bar have been extended to daytime hours, so it's not just after 9 pm anymore. The only time smoking is not allowed at Diversions is during events with children. :sad2:

We're sailing this summer, but it will be our last cruise. There are too many events we miss out on and areas we cannot enjoy because of the smoke. I pray we do not have smokers on the verandas near us this time. Paying for a Cat 1 and not being able to use the veranda will stink. I'm halfway tempted to turn our suite into a nonsmoking disco though. :teeth:

Smoking was allowed at the bar only in Diversions when we were there on our last cruise in Jan. 04. Smoking was also allowed in certain areas during the day in the Cadillac Bar. It's only the other bar that you can't smoke until 9pm.

I to am alergic to smoke and if I am around it long enough or if it is strong enough, it will trigger a migraine :headache: - a true vacation ruiner :faint: .

I promise I am not smoker bashing; however, they can still smoke in restricted areas and get their nic fix but if I get over powered by their smoke from several hours up to two days of my vacation is ruined because I am drugged in bed.

Seems like there should be some way to make a compromise. :confused3 Couldn't there at least be one smoke free club on the ship? My husband and I would like to be able to go to the clubs - we are going to try but if they are to smoky I won't chance it, I will just leave.

I wish there were some way to let them understand what their smoking does to other people. I have many times wished for a majic spray or something that I could spray on a smoker that would give them the same effect that their smoke does to me. Maybe they would understand then. I truely believe that if they understood how serious this can be (like the little girl with the asthma) that even those die-hard "I paid my money, I smoke where I want" people would try to be more considerate. ::yes::

It have been recommended (although DH and I haven't tried it, on 6 previous cruises, we just don't go to the evening adult shows because of the smoke) that you go very early, get a seat near the door. The smokers sit in the back (that is what I was told anyway, as I said, we haven't gone). From what others have said, you can get in a little of the show before the air gets too bad. By being near the door, you will get some air from that area. Then once it gets overwhelming, just skip out.

We may give this plan a try next time, but so far, we have found enough to do without going to the clubs. We always hope for a good 'grown up' movie. There is no smoking in the movie theater.

Since I could smell the smoke out in the hallway at Beat Street, we never even bothered going into the clubs. It would be great if there was a nonsmoking club so DH & I could go listen to some music after the show while the kids are in the club.

Nonsmokers who are seriously bothered by the smoke pay the same money that the smokers do, however there are areas of the ship that we cannot use at all unless we want migranes, asthma attacks, or other results that can ruin our vacation. Too bad they can't give a discount for that. ;)

What most people "forget" (not on purpose) is that nicotine is a drug. and like a lot of drugs is addicting. Some people who have smoked for a long time can not quit- they have tried many times, but because they have had the drug in their system for so long, they can not "function" without it.

I know of a couple people who have smoked for years, have tried to quit many times, will make it for almost 3 days before the HAVE to smoke. they have tried the patch, gum, everything that is out there- one person I know will get migraines from NOT smoking .

the way I look at it is if they are not around my kids, they can do whatever they choose the themselves.
untill someone passes a law that banns smoking outside, or inside your own home, you will have smokers.

The two above statements are contradictory.

There are many other places on the ship to enjoy. I'm not even a smoker, (yes, I stay away from smoke as much as I can, it bothers me as well,) I've yet to meet any 'I paid my money, I'll smoke where I want cruisers on DCL.' I think DCL does realize how much smoke bothers people and that's why they enforce one of the harshest nonsmoking policies of any cruise line. My DH has asthma as well, and after four cruises we've yet to let the smoke ruin our vacation. We're having such a good time everywhere else we go.

That's awful.... :sad2: People can do what they want in their own homes, but anywhere else they want to put a ban, I am all for it.
We are also very smoke-intolerant. Any heavy scent from strong perfume, to smoke can trigger a migraine and heavy allergies for me too. We have an inside and outside verandah room, and I will be very disappointed to never be able to go out on it because of smoking on one or both sides...now I am nervous.
Lbgraves, that was very useful info about the forward stairs, thanks! We are midship, and were thinking of taking either forward or aft stairs to get to things...so know I know to take the aft!

:goodvibes I didn't mean them to be. :goodvibes

What I was trying to say is that there are probably some die-hard (and yes probably addicted) smokers who might be more considerate if they understood what the smoke did to other people - not necessarily people on the curise - just in general. :teeth:

I have only been on one 4 day DCL cruise :boat: so far and only tried to go to the clubs 1 night - and it was fine - the people I met smoking there were considerate. I didn't have trouble with smokers on that trip.

I am just saying that I have been in some hotels, restaurants, and vacation spots where you did have those people who would blow smoke in your face if they knew it bothered you and did have the "I paid my money, I will smoke where I like" attitude. Some of them would never change but I do think that for others, if there were something that could give them the same effect that their smoke does me, some of them would be more considerate. But that majic thing doesn't exist. (I did once see a button in a store that said "If you won't smoke, I won't f*rt" - I thought that one was kinda funny).

I have friends and relatives who smoke and are considerate of me and other people who may have problems with smoke. My dad smoked until I was 10 years old and both of my grandfathers smoked until it killed them. Who knows, :confused3 maybe I am so sensitive to smoke now because I was around it so much as a small child.

So I wasn't trying to bash them - just explain that they may act that way because they don't understand what it does to others and that there isn't any way to give them the personal experience that could change their ways.

I seem to remember a no smoking sign on my verandah......am I wrong?

I agree with what you're saying RealMickey'sGirl. :flower:

I dislike smoke very much myself. I guess the point I was trying to make was that I think most smokers on DCL are very considerate. The last time we sailed on DCL, there were smokers in the clubs, and fortunately the smoking section was far away enough to where it didn't bother us. (DH is allergic to it as well.)
Smoking is permitted in so many other areas on other cruise lines. We don't enjoy the casinos, and most of the bar areas for those very reasons. :headache: But we still have a good time. :)

I don't ever remember seeing that and know that our neighbor smoked on their verandah. Maybe there's a no smoking sign in the cabin?

Since the question regarding the DCL smoking policies has been answered, I'm closing this as it always leads to a debate about smoking. That is not the purpose of the Cruise Board.

Thanks! :)
