My child has a reaction to cigarette (and cigar) smoke which then irritates her asthma resulting in an attack. Even sitting next to someone who is a heavy smoker (smoke drenched hair and clothes yet not smoking at the time) can cause an attack.

What are the rules for smoking on board?

If we should get a dining table with heavily scented somkers or a room with smoking neighbors can we get an results if we complain?'

Thanks for sharing the "rules" and related experiences.

people are allowed to smoke on their verandah, maybe you would be better off with an inside room or port hole that way you won't have to worry about smoke drifting over from the balcony beside you

you could always request a table just for your family that way you can avoid sitting beside a smoker- there are desiginated smoking areas that i'm sure someone will post

i think its going to be hard to avoid being around people who "smell" like smoke, you never know who you could be sitting next to at the shows, tendering, movies, life boat drill...... :confused3

good luck :wave2:

Two suggestions:

1) If you get a verandah, either get a navigators verandah or get one with a neighbor only on one side, like 5622, or a nav. verandah next door.

2) Have your child's doctor fill out a medical form and submit that with a request for a table for your family only.

I sympathy because I am very allergic to cigarette smoke too. NEVER sail RCCL...unlike Disney, their ship interiors all reek because they don't have nearly as many restrictions. I know what you mean about people whose clothes smell. Not just usual smoker smell, but some really are worse. A couple of flights ago, I was at the airport working on my PC by an outlet when a man came to stand near me. He must have been toking up on cigarettes to prepare for the flight because he reeked as badly as if he had a cigarette. I had to move because my nose started running. Since it was Southwest, and my husband and I take aisle and window, I made sure to keep my luggage bag on the aisle seat until he passed to make sure he wouldn't sit there. Nothing against smokers...it's just that sometimes the smell really can trigger a bad reaction in allergic people.

From my understanding, there is no smoking at the Mickey pool....BUT they do allow it at the Goofy pool! I was surprised when I was sitting at one of the tables watching my kids at the Goofy Pool (they are 11, so they have out grown the Mickey Pool) and smoke started flowing our way. We were lucky to see a table open up and we could move, but it was very disappointing that Disney allows smoking around the family pool. The adult pool is one thing, but I don't understand the family pool.

Anyway, just be aware that the Mickey pool is probably safe, but not the Goofy pool.

my son is allergic to smoke too....it gets very bad! I, on the other hand, will get an asthma attack (sometimes mild, sometimes severe) from heavy perfume.

So they actually allow smoking in the dining rooms? I hope not, myself and my children all have adverse reactions to smoke. The last cruise we were on did not allow any smoking except on a certain deck, and in the cigar club.

NO, there is no smoking in the dining rooms. Some clubs, after 9:pm, and outside on your own private verandah, and at the adult pool, goofy pool (family pool), but not at the Mickey pool.... :)

Great post. While I'm not really allergic, the smell makes me cough and choke ALOT. I grew up in a houseful of smokers, and now that I'm away from all that, the odor really almost burns my lungs.

Do you think Disney will ever adopt a NO SMOKING policy on the cruises?

Also there is no smoking in the clubs before 9pm where they hold family events but be advised that the clubs still STINK from all the smoking the night before. Its like walking into a bingo parlour the day after they held bingo and smelling all the stale air there! I used to work in a Bingo place and that is the only way I can describe the stink that is left over in the clubs from the smoky night before!

Thank goodness. Breathing a big (smoke-free) sigh of relief.

Doubtful, as other cruise lines have tried to make some of their ships nonsmoking and have lost money.

I dislike cigarette smoke just as much as the next person does, but am glad that DCL is tougher with their smoking policies than other cruises lines. (I just sailed on another line, and it was 10 times worse than smoke on DCL.)

That said, if smoke is bothersome, there are other places on board to go.

Be sure that you do not use the forward stairs or elevators to go up to deck 9!!! If you do, you will have to walk thru the adult pool area & on the port side the Cove Cafe outside seating area. We learned to avoid these areas because I am also very sensitive to the smoke. You will find some at the Goofy pool but it was never as bad there as it was forward. Even at sea with the breeze blowing the smoke smell just blew right into my face & resulted in a bad headache even after only a few moments. You don't want to use the forward stairs to go to deck 3 for dinner either since you will have to walk thru Beat Street & the clubs are there. I could always smell the smoke out in the hall as we were passing. We ended up just walking down the hall on deck 7 to the aft area.

I don't have any allergies to smoke...but I do have a dd with CF and respiratory issues that simply can NOT be around smoke...(It's hard enough for her to breath good air.) It's just to bad that DCL wouldn't put more restrictions on where smoking is allowed...say the deck 7 aft only. :goodvibes The smoking issue is always a sticky subject...with those who smoke...saying they paid good money to cruise also...but in fact I'm sure they didn't pay the good money just to go on the cruise and smoke..but to cruise and have a good time...just like eveyone else. I think alot of smoker are considerate of those around them...and the fact that they may not smoke..but then again there are others who are not thoughful of others and will light up and blow smoke where ever it goes.

Just an idea...but...having a smoker go to a designated area of the ship seems like a wonderful idea..they can smoke all they want and those who don't smoke don't have to enter said area. (Unlike as it is now...if you don't want to go where smoking is allowed...you have to say out of the clubs after 9...and continualy move around the decks to find a area in which there are no smokers)...of course this may interfer with the smokers activities...but again it's their choice to smoke..not ours..so why should we have to be the ones to pack up our things and move across the deck to another seat or skip all the adult entertainment in the evening?...I think if they choose to smoke...they should have to go to a more limited area...and really how long does it take to light up and finish....to get back to the activity?.... Again it's their choice to smoke.

But that's JMO :teeth:

We never had a problem with smokers on our cruise, other than as mention that the Adult Clubs, which are used for family events during the day (before 9 pm), do stink.
I'd be more concerned about smoking in some of the airports on the way, or in Florida. We noticed smoking there, but not so much on the ship.

Really the only place we noticed smoking was in the clubs also...and luckly our dd wasn't allowed in those areas at those times. But...there was an occasional person who would light up out on the decks as were were lounging or hanging out.

I still don't think having more of a limited area is a bad idea. I don't enjoy sitting in a smoke filled room...but other than my nose getting real stuffed with smoke...and hating the odor that hangs onto all our clothes and hair...I am not against being around someone who is smoking...(as long as my dd is NOT around) If people want to smoke then by all means smoke away...I'll keep my distance...It's just to bad that us non-smokers are the ones who are made to move away...if we want cleaner air.

Remember...smokers pay as much as you do. They don't get a discount for smoking. My grandma is a smoker, but she understands that a lot of people hate smoke. So when she cruises with us in Oct., she will probably try her best to stay away from people. I hate smoking as much as the next guy, trust me.

It's my opinion as well, Jill.

Recently, DU released a newsletter that stated that smoking hours in the Diversions bar have been extended to daytime hours, so it's not just after 9 pm anymore. The only time smoking is not allowed at Diversions is during events with children. :sad2:

We're sailing this summer, but it will be our last cruise. There are too many events we miss out on and areas we cannot enjoy because of the smoke. I pray we do not have smokers on the verandas near us this time. Paying for a Cat 1 and not being able to use the veranda will stink. I'm halfway tempted to turn our suite into a nonsmoking disco though. :teeth:

Wait, they allow smoking in the clubs after 9 now? Oh, man. Is that new(ish)? I swear when we were there last February there wasn't any smoking ever in the clubs. DW is incredibly sensitive to smoke, to the point where a good strong face-full will pretty much end her evening. Crap.

Then again, with the dueling piano bar gone, we might not have a good reason to go to the clubs at night. Although on our honeymoon last year, we were the "young" couple on the newlywed game thingie. We were decent, but DW couldn't understand the host's really heavy cockney accent. Meh. We got stomped by a guy from Cleveland named Lavelle and his wife, who'd been together 35 years. They both still remembered exactly how much he spent on their first date to a jazz club in 1967. Awwwww...

Smoking after 9 pm was the policy on our December 2003 cruise.
