What are the "people pens" at AKL??

We are staying at AKL savannah in March and I am wondering what the people pens are, exactly, and how to avoid them.

The people pens are areas right outside the building where people go in case of an emergency (e.g. fire). I am not sure you can get to them under normal circumstances (only through an emergency door).

I am not sure whether the pens are there to keep the people away from the animals or the animals away from the people.

This doesn't sound bad. Are they ugly? Should I try to get a room away from them?

We had a room on the fourth floor right over a "people pen" (didn't know that's what it was when we stayed there). It was no big deal at all. It fit in with the theming and we never gave it a second thought.

I was told the "people pens" are called bomas and they are there for guests in case of an emergency evacuation. I've had rooms with a view of the boma and it was no big deal.
