Or what is the "it" thing they all have?

Around here they are collecting & trading silly bandz
and they all wear NorthFace jackets (some in the warm weather -with the sleeves pushed up)
and Vera Bradley

well of course they all middle school & up have phones too

Wow, you just described my DDs and their friends! LOL!!

The silly bandz I can deal with, but the North Face jackets, I held off until I found some at an Outdoor Store outlet. What a find!

And yeah, my 8th grader has a phone, but her 5th grade sister does not..

Are you sure you don't live in Nashville? LOL

Same here...Silly Bandz for all ages, North Face fleece jackets for ages 10 and up, Vera Bradley lunch bags are THE thing starting in about 4th grade. It's insane.

ETA: My 8yo third grader has not started asking for a cell phone...YET. But I know the day is coming. It seems like all the kids in grades 7-8 at her school have them, a few as low as 5th grade do as well. I am saving my pennies, because I REALLY want one with a GPS scanner on it so I can find her with a keystroke. Love my child dearly, but can't always trust what she tells me.

I have no idea what Silly Bandz are so they must not be collecting them here or our kids are too old for them. I got our twins each a North Face jacket for Christmas. DS14 got a down coat, DD14 got a fleece jacket since she will wear her letter jacket. DD was looking at them at the store a while ago so I thought they would like them for Christmas.

All my kids have phones, I don't know that they collect them so much.

Kids in our town are pretty casual and not overly brand conscious.

My 13yodd is not into collecting so I have no clue. I get my info from here.;)

Since you mention the North Face coats, I have to ask what size are you getting your middle schoolers? She is about 90ishlbs and 5'0. Which is going to be her height forever.

Currently I CANNOT find a coat that fits her. I did get her a nice leather coat from Nordstrom's on sale. It was a good buy.

However I need a winter coat for the snow.

We have been trying on coat sizes all over the place and 5' does not cut it in the sleeves, even in the small.:headache:

She can't wear the girls sizes anymore, she is too big for the chest area. That is what we have been buying and can't get away with it anymore.

I guess I have to start hunting down petite coats. I have been looking however they are in short supply.

Honestly I think the coats are intentionally long in the arms so kids can pull them over their hands and not wear gloves. I think they have elastic around the cuff-I am not sure though.

They just haven't gotten to you yet! Your time is coming! :lmao:

Silly Bandz are bracelets that are shaped like animals. They're made of silicone, so when you take them off, they go back to their original shape. I have NO CLUE why these things are so popular, but it's insane. They started here (wow, I didn't realize that until I googled!) and are spreading across the country. I sure wish I had stock in these things! LOL

- Where did the Silly Bandz craze start? Birmingham actually started the whole thing! The first orders for Silly Bandz came in from Birmingham, and then spread through Alabama. From there, Silly Bandz are growing fast, with large amounts of fans in Connecticut, Ohio, New Jersey, Mississippi, Georgia, and Tennessee. They're just hitting Texas and the west coast now. What a great gift to send to friends in other places!

There's a kid who loves them so much, she has a blog about them. Here's her FAQ - http://www.animalbraceletsblog.com/animal-bracelets-blog/animal-bracelets-faqs.html

So, now when your DDs start talking about them, you will already know what they are! Or hey, I could send you some and they could be the first in Minnesota to have them! :rotfl2: (actually you can just order them online from sillybandz.com - I do; I'm not driving all over town to find these things!)

Something tells me that no matter how "cool" they are they wouldn't go over too well with my high schoolers. When they were in elementary school they would have been all over these.

I just need to find a line of coats that are more tailored. I am probably going to get her an LL Bean coat online.

Oh and thanks for the Silly Bandz info since I have no idea what is popular. I might have to look for them now. They would make nice gifts for her friends.

Right now they all seem to be collecting & wearing the 3-D thick-rimmed glasses from the movie theater (the kind given out at movies like "A Christmas Carol"). They take the plastic lenses out and wear them to school, out shopping -- where ever. Both my kids wore theirs when we went out to dinner tonight. Most of them are black, but sometimes someone will have a different color which causes everyone to search for that color.

Vera Bradley is so not in here. Just not the style in this area, I guess.

Converse, Uggs, Vera Bradley everything, curly hair, straight hair, of course North Face jackets, cell phones, Ipods,

...and anything Hello Kittly is in, but Aeropostale is out :confused3

Don't be surprised if your high schoolers don't end up wanting them too. The high schooler that checked me out at Justice not long ago was wearing them. They seem to have hit all ages here.

Although alot of middle schools are banning them. Ours did. The boys were using them as sling shots for little paper balls.

Kids collect hair straighteners and $200 jackets? How many of each do they have? I'm reading some of the "collections" on this thread and am :confused3. Are these collections or just things that are popular? There's a difference.

The OP asked what things kids collect.

DD has 4 pairs of Converse, I'd say that's a collection, lol! she has two North Face jackets and we did not pay $200 each for them.

When tweens and teens get older, the things that are trendy do become their collectables.

Oh, and DD does collect Kooky pens, does that fit the bill? ;)Thanks for the clarification though.
